Major, Civil Air PatI ol Commander California Wing

THIS wil l be an account of the effort of a grounded Wing to keep abreast of the national organization's progra m. Lt. Col . Earle Johnson, speak . ing before a gathering of Cal iforn ia Wing memhers recently had urged

every effort on the enl istment and pre·training o[ Aviation Cadets in fu lfill ment of the Army's appeal for assistance.

Statewide Cam.paign to a Aviation

Californ ia had made a ttempts in some squadro ns to comply with di rec· tives, but results, such as had been obtai ned elsewhere, by air meets, Aights for enlistees and other demon tra tio ns n t permi tted in the reo stricted military zone, had not mater ial ized.

Board. Sgt. Gene Jason, also oC the Board, accompanied Major Strand. A great deal of the success of the campaign stemmed from trus meet·

ing. Notes were compared. Strand outlined the need of recru its and the methods of examination. Kemmerrer propo ed cooperation wi thin the means of the Wing and outlined a basic strategy. tatewide distribution of material and personal contact with the units was deemed most impor. tanL Strand volunteered to obtain an Army Staff Car and to assign Sgt. J ason for a sta te tour. Wing as igned Lt. Buckham and the pro· gram's date was set. .

Next came the need of campaign material. Kemmerrer called in LL. Henry Smi th, Assistant Wing Intelligence Officer, and the printers, paper dea lers and engravers who have continuously supported the Wing pro· gram. No enthusiasm was lacking. It was decided to publish an outline

for the campaign giving basic ideas, but to depe·nd on individual units 10 use their ingenuity and promotional ability in setting up their com· munity campaign.

The basic plan covered material for newspaper and radio releases, cooperative advert ising, club, theatre and school appearances, window displays. parades, reviews, proclamations by prominent chic leaders and di tribution of Army·suppl ied recruiting material.

The cl ippings shown above represent only a portion of the newspaper cooperation. As this issue goes to press almost twice as many more have been received. California's newspapers have shown their regard for the Civil Air Patrol ever since it was organized. Their helping hands helped carry this project to success.

throughout the state. Immediate and enthusiastic assistance resulted. Mrs. Alvies contacted Mr. Lou Keplinger, Regional Chairman of Station Relations, who also responded whole· heartedly. CAP went on the air for the enti re week. Here was the OWl packet relea e:

"The California Wing of the Civil Air Patrol is assisting the Cadet Examining Boards in selecting boys who can qual. ify for Aviation Cadet training. Your local CAP unit, with headquarters aLt _________________ _

has complete information and applications. This full week, ovember I st to 7th, has been set to assist all boys 17 years

or over to get the advantage of the educational opportunity the Aviation Cadet training offers. Apply today-at Civil Air Patrol headquarters, _______________ _

Find out for yourself, th is week, what you must do to qualify for the Army Air Forces. "

The value of this assistance to the campaign can be t be realized by reading the comprehensive reports made by each unit to Wing. To all the California Radio Station . . , a snappy CAP salute !

DOWN TO BUSINESS With preliminaries out of the way, the Wing really went

to work. Military equ ipment was cheerfully loaned by bases for window trims and displays. Los Angeles opened with a two-group review. San Franci co got in on the re torat ion of treet light ing and a street show in front of the Golden Gate

Theatre. The Andrews Sisters did several numbers accompanied by the Hamilton Field Band, whi le CAP distributed leaflets. Boys were add ressed at High Schools.

GOVERNOR'S STATEMENT FOR PRESS

"The campaign now being launched to recruit Aviation Cadets in California is one that should be encouraged. It offers our young men an extra opportunity to receive special training in a field of servi ce which is making history in this war and will continue to expand our horizons when the war is over. It offers qualified boys, 17 years of age or older, the advaJltage of Aviation Cadet training as a prerequisite to service in the United States Army Air Force. The California Wing of the Civil Air Patrol has a message for young boys of our state which is in line with our na tional needs of both today and tomorrow.

EARL WARRE , Governor."

Other statements and proclamations appearing in local papers lenL pre tige to the efforts of the units, and signi fied civic appreciation of the educational va lue being. extended to the youth of the comm unity.

EVEN LAUGHS One Los Angeles paper had everybody smiling when they

headlined an article "CIVIL WAR PATROL PLANS TO TRA IN NEW CADETS." Maybe a lot of us are old-timersbut.

The Examin ing Boards began to smi le, too, when applicants started to arrive wi th CAP credentials. Los Angeles Squadron 1, First Group, showed many of them the way with window displays at Bullock's, The May Company, Desmond's, Vandegrift's, Yosemite Park & Curry Co., McKinney Blueprinting Co., and Union Pacific Ticket Office.
