Welcome mosses to shadyparts of your garden
Master Gardeners oftenare asked, individually orat plant clinics, “What canI do about the moss in mylawn?” (meaning, “Howcan I be rid of it?”) Myown answer is, “Enjoy it.”
That is not what peoplewant to hear. They want itgone because they haven’tcome to appreciate moss.Instead, it may be seen asa pesky plant and peoplewonder how it got on theirproperty since they spendmany spring, summer andfall hours tending to theirlawn. Well, it likely isthere because of shade, even if you don’t havedeep shade.
Instead of reviling it,try to consider it an eco-friendly part of your land-scape. Leave it alone andyou can choose to stopmowing in certain spots, stop fertilizing, stop spray-ing herbicides and pesti-cides since most gardeninsects and creatures don’t
munch on mosses.Instead of disliking it,
we can admire mosses asamong the oldest of plants.According to fossil traces, they have been around for400 million years or so.
They do not have trueroots. Instead, short, wispyrhizoids hold them inplace. If you decide tomove moss from one spotto another, you will findyou can easily lift a smallclump with a fork insertedbarely under the mat, oreven tug it up with yourhand.
Mosses have no flow-ers because they formedbefore flowers evolved.Their beauty is in theirvarious shades of green, sometimes tinted with sil-ver or yellows, and in theirsoftness.
You may be familiarwith some other plantswhich are called moss butactually are non-mosses.One is Spanish moss, a
long dangle of stringygray branches which youmay have seen hangingfrom oaks in the South.Others are reindeermoss—actually lichens—and Irish moss which isoffered in some nurserycatalogs. A rock garden isa great place to plant ortransplant small clumps ofmoss, combining themwith other low-growingplants, many of which willhave flowers.
If you happen to be inthe area of Durham, N.C.,Duke University has afairly new moss gardenadded to the mosses whichhave been there since thebeginning of their arbore-tum. If possible, take timeto tour their moss gardenand your appreciation forthese lovely plants maychange.
