BY SHARON DANIELS

Peonies are treasured plants, especially ifyou are fortunate enough to possess onewhich came perhaps from your grandma’sgarden. That’s a true treasure, as are “passa-long” plants from any special person.

November has featured a couple of cooldays, and some rainy ones, but it is not too lateif you can still find peonies to add to yourlandscape. Don’t delay, though, because somesupplies are sold out for this year.

Peonies are cold-hardy, so fall is the righttime to plant. If you get a mail-order shipmentand the day is just too bad for planting, putplants in a refrigerator and get them in theground as soon as possible.

As long as the ground isn’t frozen, you canstart peonies on their way this fall to decadesof growth. They are among the longest-livedof our perennials, usually living 50 years orlonger, and sometimes 100 years.

Plant them now and they can spend thewinter months concentrating on a strong rootsystem, then expend energy next spring onleaves and blooms. Be aware that they maynot flower the first year.

Should you put them with other plants orcreate a new bed specifically for peonies? It’syour call.

A peony bed displays gorgeous flowers fora few weeks, or much longer if you have vari-eties which bloom early, mid-season and late. For the rest of the summer and into early fall,

you have fairly handsome, glossy, greenshrubs.

By mixing them with other plants whichhave either blooms or outstanding foliage, their summer leaves can form a green shrubbackground for other perennials or for color-ful summer annuals.

Flower colors feature quite a range. Ifsome older shades don’t particularly temptyou, consider a maroon one called ‘Prince ofDarkness’ or the even darker merlot red‘Black Mulberry.’

A few years ago a reader of this columnwho lives in Anderson, Ind., originally fromPound, tracked me down to ask about yellowpeonies.

I looked into it and was shocked at the veryhigh price of a yellow peony. Some priceshave fallen but many remain expensive.

If you want a yellow one, you can choosefrom palest yellows, clear yellow, creamy yel-low with an apricot center, to strong gold

shades. Peonies may be singles, ruffled doubles, a

rose type, or a tree form. There are intersec-tional ones, also called Itoh hybrids, a crossbetween an herbaceous peony and a treepeony.

Once established, they are reliably droughttolerant since they are so deeply rooted.

While you wait for your nursery order toarrive, work on your peony bed. These plantslike full sun and well-drained soil. Dig the bedvery deep, 18-24 inches, to allow for root run. This is important. If your soil doesn’t drainwell, mix in plenty of organic material or heapsoil to create a raised bed effect.

If you already have peonies, it’s time to cutstalks to the ground. Don’t compost this mate-rial. Discard it to avoid potential problemswith insects.
