from the presidentFred Rogers was a public television pioneer, and he was able to make an impact on many lives because of the support of viewers. Fred’s legacy is not simply cherished re-runs. He helped make public television what it is today, and his positive spirit and messages of curiosity and caring live on within all of us. Now, I’m excited to share that there’s something new for today’s young children.

On Monday, 9/3, at 10:00 a.m., we’re launching Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, a new animated series for preschoolers. The characters are based on the original, much-loved Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, and we’re excited about bringing a whole new generation of kids into the PBS family with Daniel Tiger. The curriculum, through imagination, creativity and music, is designed to help children learn the key social skills necessary for school and for life.

This month, we salute another public television legacy: KCTS 9’s very own George Ray, who retired in August after nearly 40 years with the station! Below, please see this special message from George.

Your support makes our work possible. Thank you.

I’ve made so many friends in the KCTS 9 family. I can’t tell you how happy you’ve made me with your many calls, emails, cards and letters over the years. We’ve enjoyed some great evenings— and some great programs together. And every night, I’d go home knowing that you and I did something very worthwhile.

You’ve kept our station strong and vital, and I know you’ll continue to. That’s made me a very happy man…and for that I am very thankful.” Carry on George’s legacy with us! Make a tribute gift or share your favorite George story at KCTS9.org/george-ray.

Jody Waits “Public television has always been central in my life. When I moved to Seattle, I was particularly struck by the quality of programming on KCTS 9 and wanted to make it clear how much I appreciate their service. Being in my mid-30s, my existing assets are few, so I decided my legacy gift would be a thoughtful percentage of my retirement portfolio and a life insurance policy. Many of us have more ways to make a profound impact than we realize.”

HAPPY COOKInG!

ZUCCHInI & TOMATO GRATInserves 6

4 medium zucchini (about 1 X pounds) 3 large tomatoes (about 1V pounds),

thinly slicedW cup plus 1 tablespoon olive oil, divided 4 tablespoons Parmesan cheese, freshly

grated V cup panko bread crumbs V teaspoon dried oregano, or fresh leaves

from 3 sprigs V teaspoon each salt and black pepper,

freshly ground

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Trim ends of zuc-chini and cut in half, crosswise. Cut each half lengthwise into 4 slices. In a 9 x 12-inch baking dish, arrange zucchini and tomato slices in over-lapping, alternating rows (like roof shingles), and drizzle with W cup olive oil.

note: To prepare this recipe a day in advance, cover the vegetables with plastic film after adding the oil drizzle and refrigerate. (If using a glass baking dish, allow the dish to come up to room temperature before placing it in the oven.)

Make a crumb topping by combining cheese, panko, oregano, salt and pepper in a bowl. Stir in 1 tablespoon olive oil. Sprinkle topping over the vegetables and bake for 30 minutes, or until veggies are tender and the topping is browned.

SEND US YOUR SIDE DISHES! KCTS 9 Cooks on the Side will be our next viewer cooking special and will air in November. From creamy mashed potatoes to Zucchini & Tomato Gratin, we’ll have a wonderful collection of recipes with your help. Send your side-dish recipes to [email protected] or use the form at KCTS9.org/cooks. We’d love to see a photo of your delicious dish, too!
