Looking to the future -- The Master Gardener course will begin in September. If you know of someone that would be interested please let them know and either get them an application or have them contact the extension office.

Growing Season Summer Webinar– Pollinators and Growing Herbs
August 10th, will be our last “Growing Season” webinar from 4-6pm at the
Extension office. This month’s topic will be “Pollinators and Growing Herbs” with
Nathan Brockman, the curator of the butterfly wing of Reiman Gardens at Iowa
State, and Polk County Master Gardener Susan Appleget Hurst. They will talk
about attracting bees, birds and butterflies, and focus on growing, harvesting and
preserving culinary herbs.
“This class will help gardeners plan and maintain their gardens in a way that will support more insects in their gardens,” said Brockman, curator of the Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing.
“Herbs are very easy to grow and are even easier to use, adding surprising flavors to everyday meals,” said Susan Appleget Hurst. Master gardeners provide encouragement and support to both new and experienced gardeners. “By enticing them with our display gardens and educational opportunities, gardeners can learn more about plants and even pests, which tend to avoid herb plants, making them low maintenance and suitable garden settings.”
Cost is FREE to attend for Master Gardeners and counts for education hours!

have learned as a Master Gardener, and what keeps you motivated to stay active in
our community!
MG Recruitment Thanks Marv Stoffel, Jeanne Ambrosy, Judy

Master Gardener Interns for 2015! As of now, we
currently have 22 applications received and
counting.
This year we are trying a brand new recruitment
approach in that we will be scheduling “Meet and
Greets” with all of our prospective members. The
purpose of these sessions is to understand how our
interns best fit into our organization so we can get
them engaged in our programs right away! In
addition, we are also changing up our face-to-face
time with on-site lessons in gardens. Our first face-to-face will be held at the Dubuque Rescue Mission, where we will be in
the gardens learning about vegetables and season extension.
In an effort to integrate and support our new interns, we are seeking “mentors” to serve as guides and resources for
questions and needs that may arise throughout the first year internship. If you are interested, please contact Laura Klavitter.
As Master Gardeners, you are welcome to join any and all of our sessions including any hands-on activities for continuing
education hours!
Our detailed class schedule can be found HERE.
Save the date to meet our new students and welcome them to our program during orientation,
Tuesday, September 22nd at 6pm.
