Prior to the Civil War, most industrialization in America was in the

North; however, the equipment produced in the North had an impact on the

farming society of the South.

II. Terms to Know

a) Inventor- a person who is the first to think of or make something

b) Entrepreneur- a person who organizes resources to bring a new or better good/service to market in hopes of earning a profit

III. Cotton Gin

a) Invented by Eli Whitney

b) The cotton gin made separating the seeds from the cotton faster & easier.

c) Increased the production of cotton, which increased the need for slave labor.

IV. Reapera) Invented by: Jo Anderson

(an enslaved African American) & Cyrus McCormick (the entrepreneur who took the reaper to market)

b) The reaper was pulled behind a horse to make harvesting grain faster.

c) Increased the productivity of the African American Farmers.

V. Steamboat

a) Improved by Robert Fulton

b) Provided faster river transportation

c) Connected Southern plantations and farms to Northern industries and the Western territories.

VI. Steam Locomotive

a) Provided faster land transportation

b) Connected the Eastern states with the Southern states and Western territories.
