CONSERVING CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL: DAY TOUR Friday14 June 2013

The Cathedral of Christ Church Canterbury represents a chronicle of the history of the Christian

Church in England, from St Augustines mission from Rome in 597 to reconvert the country, through

the rich history of the Norman Conquest, destruction and rebuilding in Caen stone under Archbishop

Lanfranc (from 1070) and subsequently master mason William of Sens (the Choir 1175-78) and

Trinity Chapel by William the Englishman (1179-84). Successive construction set the French fabric

into context of the customary English stone palimpsest of evolutionary style by the Nave (1391-

1405) by Henry Yevele, South West Tower (1423-34) and the crowning Central Tower Bell Harry

(1490-99) in soaring Perpendicular Gothic by John Wastell.

John Burton, who gave the Toast to the Guests at the Companys Banquet is Surveyor to the Fabric

of Canterbury Cathedral (and Upper Warden of the Masons Company). He has kindly offered to

arrange the following Study Day for WCCA.

John writes, The first cheap High speed train, from St Pancras to Canterbury West, 10 minutes walk

from the cathedral leaves at 09 42 and gets in at 10 38 for a 11am start, with Coffee in the Lodge.

Introduction 15 min over coffee, introduction to Heather, depending on the size of the group split two

45 min sessions, Masons work and Conservation approach. I will introduce the architectural

experience. There will be a sandwich Lunch in the Lodge, then a guided Cathedral Tour, followed by

Afternoon Tea. There will be time to explore the Precincts before Evensong at 17 30.
