CANON

From videographer to photographer and back again, Simeon Quarrie describes himself as an image maker, creating still and moving pictures of top-end weddings in locations all across the globe. He talks to Ian Farrell about the technique and technology behind his work.

SIMEON QUARRIE

Simeon Quarrie has always been a visually creative person. Prior to his current role, producing stills and video for high-end weddings through his company Vivida, he has worked in graphic design, website creation and corporate video. “I was obsessed with anything that was visually creative,” he confesses. “ I honestly used to just look at my Apple Mac computer and think ‘what can I do with this thing?’”

Taking a cue from the iMovie video editing software he found during one of these experimental creative sessions, Quarrie invested in some video equipment and soon began producing corporate video for local businesses. He branched out into wedding videography when a client asked if he could cover his forthcoming marriage, and confesses that it wasn’t long before he caught the bug and began to take weddings quite seriously. “At the time I was struggling to get enough graphic design work in but there was a good income in wedding videos, and I really needed some predictable income so I could feed myself and my wife every month,” he recalls.

Initially, Quarrie focused on what he calls ‘quite tough’ assignments. “My feeling was that I was used to all his high-quality corporate work, so I should be able to hand the more complex – and better paid – wedding jobs. So I took on a lot of Asian and cultural weddings, which all went very well and I quickly began getting a good reputation in the industry,” he says.

Eventually people started asking Quarrie if he could do still photos too. “I had been thinking about branching out into photography as well as videography, and those enquires gave me the motivation I needed to go out and buy a camera to do that with,” he says. Armed with a Canon EOS 350D he started to take still photos alongside his movie footage, and hired an extra pair of hands to operate the video equipment for him.

“I’d not really taken much notice of the pictorial styles of other photographers, and I just shot stills in the same way as I shot video,” says Quarrie. “Unknowingly I had developed a style that revolved around just letting things happen in front of me and not interfering too much. Other photographers and videographers would interrupt the proceedings and ask the bride and groom to do this and that, but I always thought that disrupted the � ow. By just observing what was going on, and not holding things up, I became very popular with people.”

HIGH TECHNOLOGYQuarrie’s early-adopter approach towards technology has been a constant factor right through his career so far. Indeed he describes himself as a ‘child of the digital age’, and continues to make use of the latest developments in image making. “Something that has stood me in good stead all of my career is looking at what the consumer can do, with everyday cameras and lenses, and trying to better that – to do something different that the ordinary man in the street cannot do,” Quarrie remarks. “This in� uences my choice of camera gear and lighting equipment hugely.

“For instance, I used to shoot with the original EOS 5D, because it was full-frame and gave my pictures a different kind of depth of � eld than a consumer could get with a cropped-sensor DSLR. I invested in wide aperture lenses too, so I could shoot in the church without using � ash, and record all that lovely ambient light. I’d show people the pictures I’d shot on the camera’s screen and they’d be amazed I could get something like that.”

As camera technology has improved, so Quarrie has had to adapt to stay one step ahead of the guests who shoot pictures at the weddings he is covering. “Now high ISO shooting is really good on entry-level DSLRs,” he says. “So I am doing things with � ash now. With Canon Speedlite � ashes, used off camera, and also with Profoto portable � ash, which gives me lots more power, and lets me mix � ash and daylight together.”

STILLS TO VIDEO, AND BACK AGAINGiven his background, it’s not surprising that, today, Quarrie is as well known for video as he is for stills – something for which the revolution in DSLR video has been pivotal. “It’s interesting when you look at it like that,” he comments. “I went from video to stills and then back to video again.

From his video days Quarrie says he’s learned to create narrative and tell stories, while from his time with still photography he has developed a better of understanding of what can be done with different composition and lens perspectives. “The EOS 5D Mark II let me combine both of those things, and produce photography and cinematography that are of the same visual style and the same high standard,” he says.

Quarrie’s team work together when they shoot a wedding, with some members shooting stills and others capturing video. “We stay in contact with each other throughout the day using radio,” he says, adding that a colleague shooting video will often � ip over to still photography to cover an unexpected moment – and vice versa. “We have extraordinary � exibility as a team,” he says.

A particularly impressive use technology has come about as Quarrie’s team of photographers and videographers has got larger. “If I’m shooting stills and video at a wedding I’ll use a team of up to six people,” he says. “One of those is a digital technician, and having them there has meant we can do a rough edit of the still images and the video we have shot in the day time and play this back to the guests in the evening.”

Quarrie says that such rapid turnaround is extremely potent marketing material. “The guests have seen how we work, the professional way in which we conduct ourselves, and the type of shots we are shooting. The only thing they haven’t seen is the results, and by doing a live edit on the day we can show them that,” he says. “If we are really on the ball I can shoot the � rst dance and still get the pictures up for everyone to see before the end of the night.”


CANON

Now shooting on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Quarrie says he can also make a rough edit in camera without the need for his technician. “I can pick out the pictures that I want to show using the Rate button on the back of the camera,” he says. “I can even make adjustments to exposure and colour saturation and output a new JPEG � le, because the EOS 5D Mark III allows me to do in-camera Raw-� le editing.

“That’s something that has made me a better photographer, if I’m being honest. I now like to pride myself that I can take pictures that I am happy to show people on the back of the camera, without any retouching. I wasn’t like that when I started out: I remember saying to clients, ‘Yeah! That’s brilliant!’ and holding the camera to my chest so they couldn’t see the screen, because I knew the picture would need a lot of work in Photoshop.”

A CHANGING WORLDEven with his love of new technology, Quarrie admits that the wedding industry is a fast-changing environment in which to work. “The industry has become more dif� cult to work in, and that is partly down to social media. Facebook, Twitter and the rest mean that every photographer can see what their competitors are shooting, and which pictures and styles are popular in the comments and reposts. That means that things get copied and emulated, resulting in a kind of same-ism. A disease of imitation and copying. I’m fortunate because I’ve always tried to evolve and be a bit different, and hopefully use the right technology to stand out as being different from the rest – and hopefully a bit better too,” he says.

So would Quarrie advise new entrants to the wedding photography industry to get commercial photography experience � rst, as he did? “You could do, but I also think it’s OK to come straight into wedding photography – as long as you don’t take on too much responsibility too quickly,” he advises. “Ask yourself: ‘Do you understand what ISO is? What effect shutter speed and aperture have? Do you know what to do if it rains? Or if you camera fails? Can you cope if you cause an accident – knock the cake over or hit a child with your camera as you turn around?’ If the answer to any of this is no, then don’t take on the responsibility of a paid wedding shoot. Assist a photographer � rst and learn the trade.”

Quarrie lists overseas destination weddings and exotic engagement shoots amongst his list of favourite jobs so far, but he and team at Vivida also plan on branching out into

commercial photography and cinematography. “We have some exciting plans in the pipeline for the future,” he says. “We are due to photograph the England rugby captain for a commercial campaign soon, and we’ve just completed some amazing stuff shooting a ski chalet in Switzerland – aerial photography from a pair of helicopters,” he enthuses.

Quarrie admits he has always wanted his work to be respected outside of the wedding industry, in the more commercial sectors. “I want to make the transition now,” he says. “If you work to the highest standards, and with the best technology, then those doors will start to open. These are the dreams that come from pushing yourself creatively, and I would love to see myself – and my team – enjoying more experiences like that.”

Mark and Keith Sutton are recognised as two of the finest motorsports photographers of their generation – and this year they’ve switched to Nikon. In our exclusive interview, Mark Sutton explains what makes the D4 such a great camera for this highly demanding field.

MARK SUTTON, FORMULA 1 AND MOTORSPORTS PHOTOGRAPHERMark Sutton and his brother Keith are indisputably Formula One’s best known photographers. From modest beginnings in a small terraced house in Towcester in the early 1980s, with just one � ling cabinet for photos and a bedroom converted into a darkroom, they’ve built up Sutton Images into the world’s largest independent motorsport picture agency, with an archive of over four million transparencies and a searchable library of 900,000+ images. Now located in state-of-the-art of� ces near the legendary Silverstone Circuit, they cover every aspect of this most glamorous and compelling of sports – from trackside action to pit stops, podium shots to portraits, car-body images to atmospheric scene setters of the fans, the � ags and the grid girls – supplying images to publications all over the world. If you clock an F1 image in a motorsports magazine or on Formula1.com, chances are it’s from Sutton Images.

2013 marks a new chapter in the Sutton Images story, seeing them switch to using the Nikon D4 exclusively to shoot all their F1 races, kicking off with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne this March. As the � rst camera Keith ever used was a Nikon F2, the move marks both a return to their roots and the start of a major new relationship with Nikon. We caught up with Mark in between the Hungarian and Belgian Grand Prix to � nd out why they rate the D4 and what they’re now packing in their kitbags…

WHY DID YOU MAKE THE CHANGE?It was a great opportunity to create an association with Nikon, to be ambassadors and to help with future product development using our years of knowledge and experience. Keith has been working in Japan since 1981, when he went out there with a suitcase and a new suit and came back with a couple of contracts, and he was instrumental in showcasing in Japan what was going on with racing imagery in Europe. We’ve been shooting for the Japanese Grand Prix Special magazine – the biggest motorsports magazine in Japan – for over 25 years, and we’ve got lots of ideas for working with Nikon in Japan to showcase the D4’s features and pro� le it in the motorsports and F1 arena.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THE D4?Before we made the decision to switch, we rigorously tested the D4 and were very impressed with the results. With the speed of F1 cars, things like fast autofocus are vital, and the D4 is very fast, accurate and follows focus beautifully all the way through. The ISO is brilliant, too; having the capability to shoot quality high ISO images is very useful, especially for Grand Prix like Abu Dhabi and Singapore where they’re racing at night, and Auto ISO is great for shooting right into the pit garages, which are so dark at the back.

The fps rate is also very good, coping well in the pits and on the track. Handling is very good and the build quality is brilliant. I’ve not actually dropped one yet, although that does happen a lot – sometimes you have to throw one body to the � oor to grab another one with the lens you need and just take the consequences.

I’m also very impressed with Nikon’s SB-910 Speedlights – they’re amazing. When you’re shooting in daylight against the sun you hardly have to touch them; they just expose perfectly. It’s almost like shooting manually. Our staff photographer Patrick’s been doing a lot of off-shoe stuff, shooting against a black background with side � ash, and it looks like studio lighting – beautiful.

WHICH LENSES DO YOU USUALLY HAVE IN YOUR KITBAG?As photographers are kept well away from the track for safety reasons, we usually carry long telephotos – the 300mm f/2.8 VR II, 500mm f/4 VR and 600mm f/4 VR II – between us. We swap lenses quite often as we only carry two bodies each. We also utilise Nikon NPS depots to borrow lenses and additional bodies, and to get the sensors cleaned – that’s a very useful service. We’ve been incredibly impressed by the support NPS provides.

I love the 500mm and the 600mm is a lovely lens, too – much lighter than I expected. In fact it’s only slightly heavier than the 500mm, although it is a much bigger lens in comparison. Being able to use the new 800mm f/5.6 is amazing. I used it at Silverstone at Becketts Corner, shooting low down against the sky, and the results were incredible. The 200-400mm f/4 gives you a lot of � exibility. I used it on the podium in Spain – you can go in tight or shoot a bit looser, so it’s a great range, and you can pop on a converter too. And it’s quite reasonably priced compared to equivalents. The 10.5mm � sheye also gives you fantastic images for shooting close up to the action, and the 14-24mm f/2.8 and 24-70mm f/2.8 are great to have for general shots. The 1.7x converter is very nice, too – we use it quite a lot, mainly with the 70-200mm or 300mm lenses, as it’s a good size with full-frame.

TALK US THROUGH YOUR TYPICAL YEAR AS AN F1 PHOTOGRAPHER…I only shoot Formula 1 – so that will be 19 races this year, plus three tests at the start of the year, plus a test at Silverstone, plus all the new car launches in January. You basically get December off then it all starts again. As well as taking photographs I also work on marketing, promotions and new business, and we have an archive that we use to create features.

We get calls for archive images all the time – we recently bought an archive from former Lotus photographer David Phipps, so we’ve now got pictures going back to 1960, to Stirling Moss winning Lotus’s � rst F1 victory, in the Monaco Grand Prix. We’re also getting busy at the moment with the James Hunt/Niki Lauda � lm, Rush, that’s coming out in the autumn.

WHAT ARE THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECTS OF YOUR JOB? It’s a very high-pressure life, very long days with lots of travelling, and while the travel is great at the beginning, it can get monotonous for some – although I still love it. Running to the airport to get the � lms processed and sent out used to be the most stressful bit for me, and then there were the modem days, trying to connect… There are high-speed � xed lines at most tracks now, so those stresses have been removed, although you still have to edit your pictures as quickly as possible to get them out to the media.

Understanding the sport is very important. We’re covering everything – the reason why the tyres aren’t working, new specs on the cars – because we work for a lot of specialist magazines and websites, whose audience want to know everything – ‘Why has that front wing got a different bit on it?’ You need to know the tricks, light, angles, the times and places where there might be an accident… You need to have an understanding of the history of the sport, knowing all the drivers, present and past – many retired drivers are now stewards and commentators. As a package you’re shooting the glamour part, too – the famous girlfriends, the crazy fans with painted faces. And then we’re competing for every moment with 70-odd photographers… although we all know each other, so we tend to get along very well!

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT SHOOTING F1?It’s great to see new drivers winning races – they’re so passionate. You want them to do well; they’re so happy on the podium and you want to capture those emotions. Seeing people winning – that’s what it’s all about. Our father was a big motorsports fan and a very keen amateur photographer, and he used to take us to races at Oulton Park when we were children. So for us it’s in the blood, it’s a passion, and it’s very ful� lling to do something you love. I do it because I love every part of the sport, from the technical side to the buzz at the start of the race – I still get that buzz, and I must have done 300-400 races by now. For me, it’s the best job in the world.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO MOTORSPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY?Keith got a press pass aged 17 at Oulton Park, and started from there. I began helping him with � lm processing and printing, and when he got a contract to photograph Ayrton Senna in 1981 I started taking some pictures for him – mainly F3 at Silverstone, Donington and Oulton Park. I went to college to study photography, and then in 1985 we set up what was then called Sutton Photographic from our � rst of� ce, a three-bed terrace in Towcester – one bedroom for the of� ce and for me, one bedroom for Keith and one as a darkroom. It built up so quickly. We started off with one cabinet and now have over four million images!

By 1985 Keith was doing Grand Prix and I was covering national motor sports. Then in 1992 I started doing Grand Prix, and I’ve done every one since. We moved of� ces, got more contracts and it grew from there. In 1996 we changed the company name to Sutton Images, started our � rst website in 1997 with a simple download system, and it’s all evolved over the years – we now have our own TV programme, Weekend in Stills, broadcast on the Wednesday after a Grand Prix on Sky Sports F1.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ANYONE WANTING TO GET INTO THIS FIELD?Motorsport is dif� cult – the fences are much higher than they used to be so it’s tricky to get a clean shot without getting some height above the fence. Somewhere like Druid’s bend at Brands Hatch is great, as you can be up on the bank looking down, and some of the more far-� ung tracks have far fewer fences. But generally I’d say start at the bottom like we did, with local sports events. Rallycross and motocross are good, and local karting events have lots of fast corners and incidents – they’re a great way to start.

Renaissance Photography Prize 2013 The Renaissance Photography Prize is an international award that showcases outstanding photography from emerging or established photographers while raising funds to support young women with breast cancer. All pro� t from entries is donated to The Lavender Trust at Breast Cancer Care, UK. In the six years since its inception, Renaissance has raised £230,000 for the charity.

The winners of this year’s Renaissance Photography Prize were announced on 5th September at a fundraising awards ceremony and reception at The Wapping Project Bankside in London. From 5000 entries submitted from 64 countries, the judges selected 6 strong winners this year, including the two main winners of Best Series and Best Single Image; Hanna Putz and Jackson Patterson.

Calumet have sponsored these awards for the past three years and this year supported the Best Single Image category. This prize was won by Jackson Patterson and he has won a £500 gift voucher for his image “Elevator Point.”

Manfrotto 190 TripodsA classic tripod engineered for today’s demanding photographerThe key feature of the new 190 tripod is the 90° centre column mechanism, which allows the column to be extended vertically as normal, or horizontally to open up a wide range of framing and shooting possibilities.

The horizontal column mechanism is housed within the tripod’s top casting for compactness, but it is easily and quickly extended. Switching between vertical and horizontal column orientation requires no disassembly.

Distinguished natural history photographer Robert Thompson talks exclusively to Focus.

Exposed: My life with odonates and bryophytes

Own up. You (like me) had never heard of the words odonates and bryophytes had you?These are words that tend not to over-impact on the day to day lives of most photographers going about their businesses of taking portraits, attending weddings; masterminding advertising/fashion commissions or perhaps studio-based product shoots.

To put you out of your misery we’re talking about dragon� ies/damsel� ies/mosses and liverworts. And these creatures and plants (and others) have been a lifelong obsession for Robert Thompson, a renowned and proli� c Ulster-born natural history photographer, macro specialist and author of a number of widely-acclaimed books on Natural History and photography.

This is a man who spent FIVE years studying, photographing and writing a book about dragon� ies (The natural history of Ireland’s dragon� ies).

You might quite reasonably take the view that there just isn’t � ve years’ worth of information to be trawled about these so-called ‘jewels of the insect world – celebrated in art, poetry and religion’ - but you’d be wrong.

Reveals Robert: “With my co-author Brian Nelson we wrote 500 pages on Irish dragon� ies and I took on the task of photographing all stages of these fascinating creatures’ lives. They spend most of their lives underwater so I had to build nine water tanks to ful� l my study needs. The photography element actually took seven years to complete as they had to be reared through all their different larval cycles. I confess I would never have the patience to do that now.”

The book was the � rst all-Ireland natural history recording project and was an important publishing landmark. Says Robert: “The troubles were still going on at the time so it was hard to work with the Republic at that time. Thankfully nature itself observes no political boundaries so we just carried on until we had � nished the project. And since

that book was published I’ve had many other all-Ireland assignments come my way.”

One such project was Robert’s groundbreaking tome: The natural history of Ulster – the � rst-ever comprehensive ‘broad view’ book on natural history in the nine-county province of Ulster.

This 608 page, lavishly illustrated work with its 600 high quality photographs, sold out in fourteen weeks – and second-hand copies have been changing hands at £900 a time.

This seminal body of work, which covers the biodiversity and habitats that characterise Ulster landscapes, very nearly didn’t happen at all.

Explains Robert: “When I � rst proposed this idea to the Northern Ireland Environment Agency they sat on it for a long time. In my synopsis I said I wanted to make the book demonstrably unique. It would cover all aspects of Ulster’s history, from the sea to landscapes to animals and plants – and it would show how man has in� uenced and shaped this landscape and these habitats. This book was really aimed at educating people about natural history in their own country.”

He adds: “I wanted to do some aerial photography but they weren’t keen at � rst. They thought it might end up looking too much like a map. But I said I wanted to shoot from a helicopter- not a plane. And I wanted to have total control over the shooting which would be from anywhere between 500 and 3,000 feet.”

The agency � nally bought into the plan. “And that resulted in some of the most demanding photo-work I have ever taken on” he admits.

“It took two years to cover the province and its associated islands and sometimes we found ourselves just sitting on the helipad for up to four hours at a time thanks to inclement weather.”

The helicopter was specially modi� ed for the photo-shoots.

Recalls Robert: “They removed the double doors on the passenger side and attached a harness and safety line – that enabled me to better control the shooting.

But working over the Atlantic Ocean in January was extremely dif� cult. The wind was bitter. It numbed my whole body. Additionally, I had to deal with toxic engine fumes.

I also quickly discovered that it’s not sensible to drink water before taking off. It’s so cold that your bladder ends up squealing for mercy and relief…. but of course you can’t pee up there!”

He tells Focus: “It’s quite a challenge to try and frame an image when you are two thousand feet up in the air in freezing conditions and swaying in the wind.

It’s like sitting in a � oating bath…..everything is moving and you’re trying to focus and frame the shot. All my kit was strapped to me. Tight.

I was using two camera bodies, one with a Nikon 24-70 mm lens and one with a 200mm macro which I used as a short telephoto – so I could switch between the two lenses. It was hard to work with the gloves the helicopter charter company gave me, so I kept one of theirs on and used one of my own with the � ngers cut out. I had to shoot well above 1/1200sec even when relatively still.”

In the air the predominant challenge for a photographer can be the temperature. But Robert is equally experienced working below ground. And in this environment a key challenge/danger can be � ooding.

While shooting the County Fermanagh-based Marble Arch Cave system (the longest in Northern Ireland) his team ran into trouble.

“These caves are liable to � ood” he notes. “And I remember descending into pitch black areas and carrying lighting equipment alongside cables that might stretch to 100 metres. If you decide to change camera positions in a cave everything has to be completely reset.”

“On this occasion we had debated whether or not to stay underground as there had been considerable overnight rainfall. But we took a chance. Then our detector went off and when that happens you know you have just twenty minutes to pack up and get the hell out of there. As we made our exit I could see the � ood waters approaching.

We got out OK and I didn’t think any more of it until later that night when I saw the news and heard that three potholers had drowned that day a little further down the cave system.”

Modus operandi and ‘must-have’ equipment Before the digital revolution Robert was a big fan of medium format but now shoots mainly with a Nikon D3X and D800 – and he embraces Photoshop very sparingly.

He says: “A lot of photographers now - who didn’t grow up learning photography in the darkroom or by shooting transparency � lm. - tend to think of Photoshop as a hospital for sick images. Put them in one end, tweak in Photoshop and they come out the other end. But I still approach digital in the same way as I did medium format. I don’t go at it machine-gun style in terms of volume. I do a lot of in-camera editing. When I see I’ve got the shots I

need I only keep what I realistically think I will use. This is a very good lesson to learn because when you shoot with high megapixel digital cameras it is easy to get carried away. You end up clogging hard drive space with reams and reams of ‘samey’ pictures that you don’t actually need.

You are looking for that one magic image and the beauty with digital of course is that you can produce a thousand copies if you want to, with no problem.

I really only use Photoshop when I need to downsize for the web. I don’t do any major work on my images with this software.”

Robert is a con� rmed Nikon user these days: “I only use Nikon glass” he reveals. “ I will travel with a couple of cameras, the D3X and D800 and carry a 24-70mm zoom; 24mm PC-E; 80mm macro; 105mm macro; 200mm macro: R1C1 macro � ash kit: 70-200mm Nikon and 300mm F2.8 and 1.4x converter. I also have other Nikon � ashguns and an SB-29 micro ring � ash.

GPS is very important to me. Having a grid reference that targets a particular plant – perhaps a rare orchid – to within a matter of metres, means that in 20 or 30 years’ time having access to that metadata gives me a priceless source of reference. This is mission critical to me. I never leave home without a GPS.”

The key to success:Says Robert: “Field work and the understanding of a subject’s ecology and biology are very important. Without this knowledge you will never really be able to achieve what you need to in a photograph. The camera itself just happens to be the last link in the chain. It is just the means by which you can capture your vision. It comes in at the end but in order for it to capture that vision you need the � eldcraft, the expertise and the understanding.

With no understanding it would be very hard to know where to begin in this particular photo-discipline.

As a photographer you dedicate a considerable amount of time creating your work; every detail critical to the expression of your art. If you have ever spoken with a musician or a painter, you will recall them describing their instruments or materials and appreciate how the same attention is given to their work and how different elements effects their � nal pieces. And that is my point; understanding how the various elements, tools and materials contribute to your � nal work, your � nal image. So let us stroll through the work� ow and take a look together at an unusual suspect...

Similar to a musician, who can only create music within the limits of their instrument, photographers are also bound by the various items of their equipment. Think of your equipment as a box; the sides are the limits and you can be as creative as you want within those sides. When I worked in a news agency dark room, the manager would carefully inspect our prints; checking for good tone, the black, the white and all the grey in between. Now here is the interesting part, when looking at a badly printed photo you realise it has nothing to do with the creativity behind that great shot. It all comes down to the execution and the black, white and all the greys in between!

Nothing has changed our appreciation of a well produced photograph, except we no longer use those enlargers and chemicals. Today, those black, white and grey tones are now what the “gamma curve” controls.

Now, don’t get this confused with the curves in Photoshop which is your “creative control” of the tone in a photo; the Gamma curve is the box and Photoshop curves is your creative input from the metaphor above. Cameras, printers and even monitors all have different curves, and it is here where you will start to discover the problems. If we think of the black and white tones in an image as the “brightest” and “darkest” tones you can see, your camera will see it differently, as will the monitor and the printer to boot. These bright and dark tones are seen and represented differently by each device within the work� ow! The effect of this difference is lost detail, aspects will detract from your photographs, details within the shadows and highlights (black and white) will be lost! That means you could lose the footprints in the snow and the shadow detail on the gent’s coat.

Sitting in front of your monitor you will not know if there are any of those important details missing. But here’s a simple tip to give you an idea of what the monitor is just not showing you. Using Photoshop select the “Info” window and move your mouse over the highlights and shadows within the image, if the numbers change but you can’t see the tone, then you need an EIZO ColorEdge monitor!
