CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH JUNE 2018

From the Pastor’s Desk …..

“To the Jews who had believed in him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching,

you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32

What does a disciple of Jesus do? In my previous call in North Dakota, before becoming Senior Pastor, I was called to serve as my congregation’s “Discipleship Director.” During my interview, the call committee from First Lutheran talked with me about “the seven habits of discipleship”. I must confess I hadn’t given much thought to “habits of disciples” before - but I was intrigued and wanted to learn more. Even though we commonly hear the word “disciple” in the church, we don’t often know what it means outside of the general understanding that disciple means “follower of Jesus” – and that phrase is often associated with someone who learns from Jesus or someone who listens to Jesus and agrees that what Jesus says is true. In the passage from John 8, Jesus gave a little bit of a definition – disciples are anyone who “holds to my teaching.” But how to we “hold” to someone’s teaching – if not by actively being engaged in what was taught – letting that “teaching” shape our thinking and our behavior. My former congregation settled on the following “signs” or as they called them “habits” of disciples. I came to understand that these habits were important to becoming a more informed and effective follower of Jesus. I will be dedicating my messages for the next several months on these seven habits. They are:

Worship weekly Pray daily Read and study the bible regularly Seek to live your faith in daily life Seek the supporting relationship of other Christians Grow in giving toward the goal of tithing Learn to share faith with others

The first “habit” is worship. The New Testament book of Hebrews chapter 10, verses 23-25 says; “let us hold on unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another, all the more as you see the Day approaching”. Worship is of first importance in the life of the Christian disciple. In Matthew 28:17, it says that after the disciples gathered in Galilee to see the risen Lord Jesus for the first time, “they worshipped him”. In our passage from Hebrews, the admonition is to not allow ourselves “to stop meeting together” for this is one of the first indications that dedication to living in a good and right relationship with the Lord may be eroding. But it is also important for us to pay attention to the language in Hebrews 10. Notice how many times the word “we” and “us” are used. What is worship? The answer to that question could fill volumes, but let’s begin here - worship is “we” and it is “us”. It is what a community presents to God together, regularly and well. It is adoration, and praise, and thanksgiving that “ascribes worth” to God. It is an important work and is not to be taken lightly. But it is a work – it is a “habit.” And we are not to allow ourselves to assume that it can be done individually. Remember that worship is “we” and “us”, the first and perhaps most important thing we do together. It is “a work of the people”. It is directed to God, but it is also a gift from God, for as our passage says, when we meet together, we “encourage one another”.

We always want to make our worship at Calvary something exciting, meaningful, encouraging, faithful to our Christian roots, and yet always mindful that the language of faith has to be made available to new generations of believers. This does involve new liturgies, new songs, and this summer, it will involve a departure from an old, faithful friend – the common lectionary or assigned weekly readings, so that I, and my colleagues Dawn, Dan and Jerry, might entertain some of the specific questions of the faith you recently raised for us to take on for our summer preaching. Our worship board, our Music Director Gene, and I always strive to make our worship -- that living conversation between God, ourselves, and the world he has called us to love on his behalf -- an enriching and meaningful habit. We propose to do so… Because of a cross, Pastor Nelson

For June, the women’s ministry book group will change our date and time to allow us to select books for next year and to take a field trip to the Milwaukee Art Museum. We will meet on Thursday, June 14 at 9:00 am in the media room to select our books and discussion leaders for next year. Bring along any ideas for good books you’ve read or you’ve read about. We try to include a biography, a “classic”, and a general non-fiction book in our schedule. Beyond that, we find some serious and some fun books for variety. At 11:00, we’ll carpool down to the Milwaukee Art Museum for lunch in their café and a nice stroll through the museum to enjoy old favorites and some new exhibits. We’ll plan to leave the museum by 3:00 to avoid rush hour. This is always a nice way to wrap up our year of reading. Even if you haven’t been able to join us in the past, we invite you to come and throw your favorite book titles into the hat!

Holly Novotny recently retired and was recognized with a farewell dinner. Here is a small excerpt from her thank you note: “I want to thank Pastor Ken, Grace Gunnlaugsson, Ruth Brostowitz, Mary Smith and Jan Lukasik for the outstanding retirement celebration. It was an awesome evening for me and my family. The

food, the cake, Mary Lau’s cookies and decorations were over the top. Thank you for the congregation gifts, including the funny ones. Thanks to Jan Lukasik for the beautiful and special prayer shawl. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!”

Her note is posted on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall, if you’d like to read it in its entirety.

Cinco de Mayo

Dinner

Summer Preaching Topics

Thank you to everyone who contributed an idea for summer preaching topics. Obviously not everything could be covered in three months, but your contributions, if not included as a subject this coming summer, were not in vain. We will make every effort to return to them in the fall and throughout the upcoming year, and very much appreciates the participation of the

congregation and always welcome suggestions and feedback. Several people asked “How are the books of the Bible organized?’ We will address this as part of an eight-week series in June and July entitled “The Book that is a Library.” Several people also asked about the work of the Holy Spirit and what role the Holy Spirit plays in our lives. We will dedicate five weeks to this topic, in August and the first week of September tentatively titled “Holy Spirit Month at Calvary”. Other topics suggested were; What does the Bible say about Baptism – (what about infant Baptism and the biblical basis for it and why do some churches wait for a day of reckoning); the Book of Romans (covered in the summer of 2017) and specifically Romans 9:22-24 – what does it mean regarding “predestination”; Current Events; The Life, Ministry and Writings of the Apostle Paul; Why we suffer and how faith is shaken after tragedy or huge loss to the point that people doubt God’s existence or love for them (e.g. after a divorce); Women of the Bible – their stories; Matthew 5:39 – what does this mean (love your enemies); and Luke 6:27-36 or Matthew 5:44 – what do these passages mean (pray for those who persecute you, turn the other cheek, lend to those who cannot re-pay you.) Lots of great subjects. Preaching them will be challenging but fun!

Summer is here, and with that, the music ministers go into summer break. Many thanks to the Celebration Ringers, Alleluia Choir, Contemporary Ensemble, and Sunday School Choir, and their respective music leaders. Like so much in worship, music doesn’t just magically happen. Well maybe once in a while, but most of the time practice is needed, and those mentioned above have diligently come to church for rehearsal, when they might have preferred to just stay home and keep warm and dry. That’s dedication.

Summer Choir will happen on June 17, July 15, and August 19. If you’d like to participate, please arrive in the Choir Room at 8:15am, where you’ll learn a simple anthem, and then sing at 9:00 worship. This is a low-impact way to explore Alleluia Choir. Also, a number of people have signed up and will be providing summer vocal and instrumental music at worship. Celebration Ringers will also participate on a summer weekend to be determined.
