Happy September everyone,

Hope this finds you and your family safe and well!

Small game season opens soon. Time to get the shotguns cleaned, inventory the hunting cloths and get the dogs ready to hunt.

I want to thank everyone who helped with the club clean up after the storms that took down many trees during the July and August storms. The club was hit pretty hard, but as always, the club members stepped up to get the job done.

I also wanted to thank everyone who came out to support and volunteer hours at the past couple of club events. This includes Rockin’ Under the Stars and Good Ole Days.

We are still in the process of conducting our first club audit in more than a decade. The audit team was planning to have their report done and completed a couple months back, but had some further questions they are waiting to get answered. They should have the audit closed in time for the September board/membership meeting.

The next membership meeting is September 15th. Please try to attend. We have been short the quorum needed to run the business portion of the meeting for the past couple of months. In order for this club to survive and make changes needed, we need to have a quorum.

Club nominations are now open until the October meeting night. If you or know someone interested in running for the board of directors or officer position, please fill out the application. You can get yours at the main clubhouse.

If there is anything, the Board or I can do for you please let me know.

Take care and I’ll see you at the club!

~ Larry Gray

The Flowers of Multi-Lakes – The Pickerel Weed If you have recently walked out our Reed Lake dock you could not have missed the beautiful

flowers growing on the north side - purple spires growing all along the shore and into the lake. This is pickerel weed.

Fish, although more than just pickerel, may seek shelter in clumps of these plants, hence the common name of pickerel weed.

Common pickerel weed is an aquatic plant native to the American continents. It grows in a variety of wetlands, including pond and lake margins across an extremely large range from eastern Canada south to Argentina.

Pickerelweed grows up to 4 feet tall and is found in all areas of Michigan. The thick rhizomes spread to form large colonies can cover large areas as it does in Reed Lake.

Its preference is for freshwater depth up to 12 inches in full sun in rich loamy soils.

Pickerel weed flowers freely from June to October. The flower stems are held well above the water for a showy long season display and the tall spikes of lavender-blue flowers attract many pollinators.

Flowers give way to starchy seeds with distinctive toothed ridges. Flower spikes droop after bloom, releasing the distinctive seeds into the water. Seeds are edible off the plant or can be dried and added to granola cereals. Very young leaves can be used as salad greens.

The summer sporting clays league ended this past

month.  The league consisted of 12 registered

shoots from May to August and was capped off by

a fantastic banquet.  We had 18 teams (3 shooters

per team) participate, which is a new record.

JimDarkangelois the man behind all our

Tuesday night fun.  Jim has been running and

coordinating the sporting clays league for 25

years.  The league has expanded from a handful of

teams to now 18 teams, with a rumor of at least

two more teams joining next year.  We clay

shooters, are very thankful to have a guy like Jim

at our club.

Trap League Results: First Place Team: Kevin Sims & Brian Scott Second Place Team: Chris Lane & Alec Kennedy High‐Gun Shooter: Joe Bowles

Skeet League Results: First Place Team: Kevin Sims & Dave Berlin Second Place Team: Joe Bowles & Dale Fulkerson Skeet High‐Gun Shooter: Kevin Sims

The league is scored on a handicap system, and

you are awarded additional targets if you shoot

sub‐gauge.  Example: if you shoot 20 gauge, you

are award one additional target to your score.

Jimmy D’s Sporting Clays League by Kevin Sims

The winter skeet & trap league is finally finished.

There was an extension to the league due to

limited availability of shotgun shells.  Have you

seen the ammo shelves at your local store?

Completely empty!

The league consists of 16 rounds (25 targets per

round), and you had the option to either shoot

skeet, trap or both leagues.  What makes the

winter league fun is, you have the option to shoot

your targets at night “under the lights”.

How to Take the Gun Out of the Box By CJ Barringer, NRA Certified Instructor, RSO

FIREARM EMERGENCY! GET YOUR RED FOLDER READY!

The world is a bit crazy right now and unfortunately, violence seems to be everywhere and often unexpected. I suggest this strategy to my students in my firearms training classes: Get your Red Folder ready!

In a firearms emergency or altercation, it is advisable to only speak to your attorney. I fully support the police, but you must protect yourself. You may be arrested, even if you are the victim. If you are arrested, you may be allowed only one phone call. Call your designated person and tell them to go the file cabinet (or wherever) and pull out the Red Folder and follow directions.

A few items you should include in your Red Folder:

• The name and contact information of your Attorney. Not all attorneys are 2A friendly, so you need to do some research. Inform the attorney where the individual is held or located (could be a hospital) and what is the charge.

• The name and contact information for a Bail Bondsman. Again, you will have to inform them where the individual is held or located and the charge.

• Copy of CPL and Copy of CPL Class Certificate

• Copy of Driver's License

• Copy of Firearm Registration

• Copy of Birth Certificate

• $100 cash

Bring to the Jail:

• Change of clothes including shoes. (Clean clothes for going to court, in case the other clothes are…wet.)

• $100 cash or cashier's check may be preferred. The individual may have to purchase some items and they are not free.

DID YOU KNOW? In the English language

there are approximately 1,000,000 (yes, that is one million!) words…and growing. This has a lot to do with technological and scientific advances.

By the time we are adults, it is estimated that we know anywhere from 7,000 to 20,000 words. These are the words we know, can read, or simply recognize. This is called your passive vocabulary. In a normal day, we speak or use only a fraction of those words, maybe about 2,000. This is your active or working vocabulary. As you can see, most people seldom use all the words they know.

To improve your vocabulary, you might try learning a word a day. There are websites that can help you. But don’t be discouraged, sad, depressed, bewildered, disconcerted, overwhelmed, frantic or flustered. Relax. Trying to learn 1,000,000 words, at a word a day, is going to take you a reealllly long time.

Meeting called to order @ 7:34 PM by Maybrier. Maybrier requested all cell phones and mobile devices be put on silent and remove hats before leading the group in the pledges. Motion: Matte/Regan approve the June meeting minutes as read; Motion carried. Motion: Regan/Matte approve the July meeting minutes as presented & corrected, Motion carried. Officers present: Gray, Miller, Johnson & Howie. Directors present: Barbara, Brennecke, Kruckenberg, Kubik, Matte, Maybrier, McClatchey, Lynch, Lash & Past President Regan. ABSENT: Ashcraft.

People to See the Board: Mick Musial #104, Mick brought information back to the board about submitting for a 501C-3 corporation status. He stated the first thing that would be helpful, would be to put out educational information such as How-to videos such as fly tying, instructional videos on other venues at the club, on a you tube channel. He states that this is part of showing that we were a nonprofit educational club. Mick also went into detail on how this would help market the club and could bring in new members. Mick said the first step was to approach the assessor’s office and ask if they would allow us to change to a 501C-3. If they said no, we would have to file appeals with the tax tribunal and possibly go to court to change the status of the club. He stated we also need to look at our Charter or Corporate organizational filings and make sure it had the correct wording. He said then the property title would have to transfer to the title of the 501C-3. Discussion followed; Mick was asked what all this would cost. He said he was not a non-profit expert but had one we could talk to, to find out a ballpark price. But, if we had to appeal to the tax tribunal and court of appeals, that each one of those could run about $20,000. Additionally, drafting a letter to the IRS and filing fees could run about $2,000 plus whatever the attorney charged for his time, research, and paperwork. He said he would talk to Robert Rhodes who was a 501C-3 specialist and get an approximate price.

Ken Graham #285, Nick Frederick #513, Audit committee. Ken and Nick came to the Board to update us on how the audit was coming. They were hoping to have all the information to present to the board this evening, but just received the information from the clubs CPA this morning, and it was not in the correct format that they needed. Discussion followed. The board asked Jim Howie to contact the CPA and schedule a conference call for Tuesday of next week, to straighten out the information that is needed.

Eric Manning #291, NPRC shoot. Manning presented the layout for the NPRC shoot and asked for a 9AM start time for shooting. Motion: Matte/ Miller, to approve the site layout, map for NPRC shooting and vendors, and to allow a 9AM shooting time. Motion Carried. Manning also stated that the nomination committee had met and had opened nominations for Board of Directors and Officers. All officer positions are open, and 3 board positions are available.
