PRAYER OF MEDITATION
Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost
When joy is gone and hearts are sick, O God, you give us Christ as our
healing balm. He came in human flesh that he might give himself as a
ransom for our salvation and anoint us with the Spirit of consolation and
joy. Hear the cry of your people, that we may rejoice in the richness of your
love and be faithful stewards of your many gifts. Amen.

Congregational Prayers for Moravian Worship 1. The Lord’s Prayer*
O come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our
maker.
For he is our God; we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep
of his hand.
T. WORSHIP (159 A) (Hymn 821; tune for hymn 399)
This day is holy to the Lord; this day the Lord has made;
we will rejoice with one accord and in his name be glad.
Come, let us worship and bow down, with thanks appear before his throne;
he to our songs of praise and prayer will lend a gracious ear.
Let us pray for trust in God, that in all the situations of life we may not be
troubled by needless anxiety or doubt, but may come to him as our loving
heavenly Father, hallowing God’s Name in everything that reveals God,
both in the natural world and in the Holy Scriptures, given for the guidance
and salvation of all.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name.
Let us pray for divine guidance, that God’s will may be known and done
among the nations, so that we and the whole world may come to a fuller
knowledge of God’s truth and love, as the gospel of Jesus Christ spreads
throughout the whole world until all people come to know him as Savior and
Lord.
Thy kingdom come.
Let us pray for faithfulness, not only in great matters, but also in the
smallest things, that we may pattern our lives after Christ’s example and be
his holy people to our life’s end.
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
(The liturgy continues on the reverse side.)
Let us pray for earthly necessities, not only for ourselves, but that all God’s
children may be clothed and sheltered and fed.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Let us pray for forgiveness, that our merciful Father may renew his image in
us, so that we and all people may be freed from bitterness and malice,
forgiving one another as he in Christ has forgiven us.
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass
against us.
Let us pray for strength from above, that God may grant us his power and
protection to support us in all the dangers and temptations of life.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Let us pray for the constant awareness of God’s presence within each of us
and within God’s whole church, that we may be comforted by his love and
strengthened for witness and service to all of creation in the name of Christ.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever
and ever. Amen.
T. CASSEL (167 A) (Hymn 556)
Jesus, Prince of Peace, be near us; fix in all our hearts your home;
with your gracious presence cheer us; let your sacred kingdom come;
raise to heav’n our expectation, give our favored souls to prove
glorious and complete salvation in the realms of bliss above.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
We thank Pam Goforth for serving as our Lay Reader this morning.
Our 2019 Discipleship Emphasis continues this morning. This year’s
theme is “That We, as on one stem growing.” On September 8, we had a
very successful and well-attended “Ministry Fair” where many of our
members were able to obtain information about Calvary’s various
ministries. Additionally, discipleship packets have been picked up or
mailed to all of our members. If you need an additional packet, these can be
found in the narthex. Each family will have the opportunity to present their
commitment cards and time and talent surveys to the Lord next Sunday,
September 29, which will be Discipleship Dedication Sunday. See page
two of this insert for more details on this year’s Discipleship program.
This fall’s Calvary @ The Table series continues this Wednesday,
September 25! Dinner will be held at 5:00 p.m. We are grateful to the New
Life Class for preparing this week’s menu of baked spaghetti. Following
dinner, programs for all groups will be held. In lieu of the study of Luke
this coming Wednesday evening, the Rev. Jeff Carter, Moravian Chaplain at
the Forsyth Jail and Prison Ministry, will be our guest speaker. Jeff will be
sharing the ministry's work and share with us how we might become
involved in ministering to those imprisoned. Our study of Luke will resume
the following week, Wednesday, October 2. We hope you will be able to
attend this fall’s Calvary @ The Table series which continues through
October 30.

Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost
September 22, 2019
We welcome all members and guests on this Fifteenth Sunday after
Pentecost. We are glad that you have come to worship at Calvary! We
hope you will feel welcome in the Lord’s house.
Please make a special effort to greet those around you in the spirit of
Christian fellowship. As the Ritual of Friendship pad is passed, kindly
take a moment to write down your name, address, and phone number.
During the prelude, you are invited to enter a spirit of reverence and
quiet reflection as we prepare to worship the Lord. We kindly request
that you silence all electronic devices.
Our Discipleship Emphasis for this year, “That We, as on one stem
growing,” continues today! During worship this morning and continuing
next Sunday, September 29, our worship services are being built around this
theme with a sermon series designed to help us look at what disciples do as
committed followers of Jesus Christ.
Thank you, Calvary Moravian, for your amazing support of the
Discipleship Ministry Fair on Sunday, September 8! Many of you attended
the Fair, enjoyed lunch prepared by the Hospitality Committee, visited the
awesome displays that showcased Calvary's many ministry opportunities,
and signed up for one or more of the ministry areas. Your support and
participation set a positive tone for the 2019 Discipleship Campaign.
Looking around the Fellowship Hall, one could see friendship, fellowship,
and faith at work, giving testimony to "That We, as on one stem growing."
We are grateful for each of you! Also each member/family unit has had the opportunity to pick up or receive
through the mail their “discipleship packet” for this year, including a
commitment card and time and talent survey. Members will be asked to
bring their commitment cards and completed surveys to worship next
Sunday, September 29. If you need additional packets, they may be found
in the narthex.
We hope everyone will make a concerted effort to be present for all of these
important services during September, and let us all join in prayer for one
another that Calvary can truly be a place where we are “branches of Christ,
the Vine.”
The Discipleship Committee
Pastor Lane will be attending the Moravian/Episcopal Dialogue Meeting in
Bethlehem, PA beginning tomorrow as the Bishop representative from the
Southern Province. He will return home this Friday.
Day of Service at Laurel Ridge – this coming Saturday, September 28. Calvary will be participating in a Southern Province wide Moravian Day of
Service! We will head up the mountain to Laurel Ridge to work on Oaks 4
cabin, which our Men’s Fellowship adopted last year. In addition to minor
construction, there will be other chores that can be done. A picnic lunch will
be provided. Plan to arrive 9:00 a.m., Saturday, September 28th. We will
finish up mid-afternoon. Tools will be provided. Please bring your gloves
for this work. Join us for a day of satisfying work, a picnic lunch, and FUN
on the mountain!! Please call Donna Cheek to sign up: 336.399.0857.

Come, O Unexpected Jesus
Shrewd? Dishonest? Clever? How can these translations coexist in the world
of biblical interpretation? No one seems to agree on what this parable of the
“shrewd/dishonest manager” actually means, but almost everyone agrees
that it is strange. Or is it?
If we’ve learned anything throughout our lives as Christians, surely it is
never to expect the expected from Jesus. That would be too easy. And yet,
this parable is extreme. When is the last time you were reprimanded for
being dishonest, responded by being even more dishonest, and then were
commended for it? It simply doesn’t make sense.
It makes about as much sense as loving your enemies, throwing a party for
your irresponsible son, a newborn baby who is savior of the world, an empty
tomb when someone has died . . .
Whenever Jesus does or says the unexpected, I’ve learned to look for the
relationships in the story. Jesus has a way of surprising us with God’s
generosity in relationships. It has nothing to do with our idea of fairness and
everything to do with God’s grace.
In this case, did the manager value relationships by putting them ahead of
money? Did the owner care more about the manager than his bottom line?
Does the radical generosity of God extend to and through those whose
worth the world might question? This is a parable that leads us to more
questions than answers.
May we experience God’s generosity in community as we ask, struggle,
discern, and wonder together.

THE ORGAN OF CALVARY MORAVIAN CHURCH
Calvary’s organ was built by the Hook and Hastings Company of Boston,
MA, which was in business from 1827-1936. The Opus (model) Number
2510 is inscribed in various places inside the organ. A graffito on the wall
inside the organ says: “Organ installed March 18, 1926, W. C. Greenwood,
J.B. Wilson.” Mr. Greenwood was descended from Joseph Greenwood,
who established an organ building company in England about 1825. The
instrument is a two-manual organ with over 2,000 pipes. It has a special
electro pneumatic action; 20 speaking stops (e.g., oboe, tuba, brass, violin,
etc.), plus a large number of functional stops; 17 ranks; and a detached
console. The instrument was originally installed at a cost of $10,000, the
money being raised by the congregation. It was dedicated on Easter Sunday,
April 4, 1926. The organ is the only specimen of its type surviving in this
area. It is part of the original equipment of the building and was unaltered
until 1983, when E. C. White carried out a conservative modernization plan
drawn up by James Boeringer.
Seeking to be good stewards of this historic instrument which has
complemented our worship for almost a century, Calvary embarked upon its
renovation this summer. At a cost of approximately $140,000 raised over a
period of 3 years, Lewtak Pipe Organ Builders of Mocksville, NC received
the contract to complete this important project. The process includes the
renovation of the organ façade, overhaul of the swell louvers mechanism,
and the delicate leather replacement of the pneumatic motors that operate
valves for each individual pipe, as well as other repairs and maintenance
issues.
Due to the generosity of many, almost $120,000 of the total project cost has
been raised. However, we still have about $20,000 to raise in order to
satisfy our obligation to Tom Lewtak. If you would like to make a
contribution toward this project, it will be greatly appreciated. If you have
questions, please see Pastor Lane, Amanda Schumpert, or Spencer Bullins,
Chair of the Board of Trustees.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 16, at 4:00 p.m. when a
special dedicatory concert for the organ will be held in the Calvary
sanctuary. To God be the Glory!
