The Moravian Music Foundation preserves…

2010 saw some significant progress in our plans to convert our library catalog from cards (complete set only in the Winston-Salem office) to electronic records (which will be accessible world-wide). Working with grants received from the Winston-Salem Foundation and the John and Anna Hanes Foundation, we were able to begin converting some of the records as a sort of “pilot project”, and with many e-mails back and forth, we set up the project parameters. We celebrate the receipt of grants from the Reeves Foundation of Dover, Ohio, and the Salem Congregation, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. These two will enable us to convert the cards of the Dover Collection and to make significant progress on the Salem Collegium Musicum and Salem Congregation cards. We continued to fine-tune the plans for this immense project, and to seek further funding. Watch for updates as we continue to make progress … When the project is complete, you’ll be able to sit at your computer, and look up “Peter, Johann Friedrich,” and see the following sorts of information for each of his works in American Moravian collections:

• title • catalog numbers • date (if known) • text source (if known)

• alternate texts • instrumentation and list of parts

• tempo and key • length • publication information (if any) • recording information (if any)

• Lending Library (if present)

In fall 2010 we were delighted to add Sister Barbara Giesler to our volunteer corps! Barbara is usually in the office for a half day per week (mostly Thursdays), and her current project is cataloging photos! She is catching up with the long, long backlog of photographs we’ve received over the past several years. These provide a priceless archival record of MMF activities, not only for now but for future generations. (And yes, while we do preserve some photos in electronic form, we also print those we really, really need to save, on archival paper … recalling those 12” floppy disks from the 1970’s which no one has equipment designed to read any more!) Welcome, Barbara!

The Moravian Music Foundation celebrates…

MMF now “owns” the Moravian Music Festivals (“I thought the Music Foundation already did own the Festivals,” you think.) But not so – the Moravian Music Festivals were sponsored by the Moravian Church in America, Northern and Southern Provinces. A few years ago, the Provincial Elders Conferences of both provinces approached the MMF Board of Trustees to ask if MMF would take on full responsibility for the Festivals. At that time, the Board was uncertain of financial risks to MMF, and chose not to do so. However, the question arose again in the fall of 2009, and after careful investigation and consultation, in the spring of 2010, the MMF Board accepted the responsibility, beginning with the 24th Moravian Music Festival to be held July 14-20, 2013, in Bethlehem, PA.

Did you get those dates? Are they seared into your memory and written in your calendar? If not, why not? Why not take a moment now to write them down and commit them to memory and plans?

See you in Bethlehem!

European Concert Tour July saw the first-ever of its kind in Moravian Music Foundation history – a concert tour with some 70 participants,

traveling, singing, meeting Moravian brothers and sisters everywhere, seeing sites we’d only read about, singing, singing, singing … re-learning music we’d sung at the 2009 Festival (and some we hadn’t!), getting to know the talented young musicians from Rollins College who accompanied us, enjoying great food and drink and fellowship …

We began with two days of rehearsal in Bethlehem, with a concert in Central Moravian Church and participated in worship at Central before boarding buses to JFK Airport in New York. Flying overnight to Prague (via Paris), we settled into our hotel in Prague and then had a short walking tour and wonderful dinner!

Page 3: Moravian Music Foundation - GuideStar

2010 ANNUAL REPORT Page 3

We sang two concerts in Prague, at the St. Nikolai church and at St. Simon and Jude church; we had awe-inspiring tours and sang outside the Bethlehem Chapel. Visiting with the Moravian congregation at Zelezny Brod, we enjoyed gracious hospitality, and then braved the challenging walk to the Chalice Rocks, secret worship site of the ancient persecuted Unitas Fratrum.

Driving on to Herrnhut, we felt very much at home … a tour of the Hutberg, the graveyard there, singing at the graves of many Moravian musicians … a visit to the famous Star Factory … concerts at Herrnhut and Niesky … the Singstunde at Niesky … worship at Herrnhut … all deeply moving experiences, building relationships with brothers and sisters …

After worship at Herrnhut, half our group returned to Prague to fly home, and the rest went on toward Oberammergau for the Passion Play, with a delightful tea and visit with the congregation at Ebersdorf, a most pleasant overnight stay at Rothenburg, and a visit to the castle at Neuschwannstein.

Folks are already asking, “When’s the next one?” and “Where are we going next time?” All we can say to that is, Stay tuned!

As with all memorable trips, the description of the itinerary can’t capture the experience. To hear more stories, contact any of the tour participants listed here:

This Year’s Moravian Music Foundation Award

THE MORAVIAN MUSIC FOUNDATION

G. Van Krause

You have been directing the Advent-Hopewell Moravian Band for over thirty years. During those years, members of the band have grown in musical and spiritual maturity. Upon leaving rehearsal, band members have been known to say to one another, “Well, we’ve been to church now.” The goal of the band is to provide a ministry to the community by presenting music in service to the Lord Jesus Christ, spreading God’s word and inviting people to share in the life of the church. You have served as part minister and part missionary, as musician, conductor, encourager, and teacher. As a director, you lead with humor and patience, with inspiration and with love. Through your gifts of grace and music, you have created an inclusive community of musicians of all ages and levels of ability. The members of the Advent-Hopewell Moravian Band come together as individuals in a band, but leave as members of a family. Although many have played in the band for many years, new members are encouraged and immediately made to feel at home; and this welcoming attitude begins with you, the leader of the band. Truly your leadership is a witness to the love of Christ, and reaches far beyond Tuesday night rehearsals to embrace all who hear the Advent-Hopewell Moravian Band. For your dedicated service; your sharing of the joy of music in and beyond worship; and your contribution to the preservation, celebration, and cultivation of the musical life of the Moravians; the Board of Trustees of the Moravian Music Foundation takes great delight in presenting to you the

The Moravian Music Foundation cultivates…

The Moravian Star Anthem Series continues to grow! Through the Moravian Star Anthem Series, the Moravian

Music Foundation publishes anthems by a variety of Moravian composers, including newly-edited works, some “old favorites” in new editions, and new compositions. Each publication includes biographical information about the composer along with the anthem. Full score and orchestral parts are available for each anthem through the Moravian Music Foundation. The organ part of each anthem is also available in a lower key. Anthems published in 2010 are: MMFS1001 Sing, O Ye Heavens J. F. Peter SATB $1.95

This anthem was edited and published in loving memory of Agnes Stewart Jackson and Emma Marilyn Sinclair.

Page 8: Moravian Music Foundation - GuideStar

2010 ANNUAL REPORT Page 8 MMFS1002 Blessed Are They Who Jesus’ Suffering J. F. Peter SATB $1.95

The funding for this publication was provided by the Choir of Central Moravian Church, Bethlehem, PA, to honor Deborah Leyshon-Brandt in celebration of her 30 years of faithful service as the choir’s mezzo-soprano soloist. Deborah’s extraordinary talent and musicality, her leadership, her creativity, and her nurturing spirit have inspired the choir to exalt our Heavenly Father with songs of joy and thanksgiving. “I will lift up my eyes to the hills from whence comes my help. I will lift up my voice to the Lord – singing Lauda, Laude.”

MMFS1003 Hail, Infant Newborn D. M. Michael SATB $1.75 The funding for this publication was provided in loving memory of Marie Hildebrandt, who was a lifelong member of the Lake Mills Moravian Church in Wisconsin and a long-time member of the Senior Choir. For many years she helped care for the choir robes and before her death she willed half of her estate to support the music ministry of the church.

MMFS1004 There Is Salvation in Christ Alone J. Herbst SATB $1.75 The funding for this publication was provided as a gift to Dr. John V. Sinclair with grateful and sincere appreciation for the many ways he supports and promotes Moravian music.

MMFS1005 I’ll Praise the Lord With Singing J. C. Bechler S solo/SATB $1.95 This anthem’s publication is made possible by a gift from the Chancel and Sanctuary Choirs of Centenary United Methodist Church, Winston-Salem, NC, in honor of Ray Ebert. A lifelong member of the Moravian Church, Ray served as Centenary’s organist from 1970 to 2010. A gifted improviser and service player, Ray’s contributions to the musical life of our community—and our lives—are profound.

For information about sponsoring the publication of an anthem in the Moravian Star Anthem Series

in honor or in memory of a loved one or organization, please contact the MMF office ([email protected]).

Singing from the Heart: A Shorter Moravian Hymnal and Liturgies Did you ever wish for a “shorter Moravian hymnal”? (Or did you ever even think you might want one?) What about

for travel? Women’s Fellowship meetings? Retreats? Camps? A small gift to acquaint others with the best-loved Moravian hymns? This is what Singing From the Heart: A Shorter Moravian Hymnal and Liturgies is! Released in June by the Interprovincial Board of Communications, this book was called for by the Southern Province Synod of 2006. The Moravian Music Foundation provided editorial services, under the oversight of the Commission on Music and Worship of the Southern Province. The spiral-bound soft-cover book has about 100 hymns, the “core” liturgies from the Moravian Book of Worship (Baptism/confirmation, Memorial service, Easter Morning, the Shorter Church Litany, and the like), and a “baker’s dozen” shorter liturgies or “Congregational Prayers for Moravian Worship”. Of course, like most ideas Moravian, it really isn’t new – a very similar thing was done 100 years ago with the production of the Shorter Moravian Hymn Book, printed in 1902 (and reissued in 1920!). And even earlier – in 1579 the Unitas Fratrum published a smaller (and more affordable!) version of its big 1576 hymnal.

In this 2010 version, all the hymns have guitar chords as well as the traditional four-part settings. Copies are available for $9.00 from the Interprovincial Board of Communications and the Moravian Music Foundation.

Monograph biography of Bechler Published in November was a monograph biography of Johann Christian Bechler (1784-1857), written by the Rev. Dr. C. Daniel Crews. Comparable to the biographies of Peter and Antes already published by MMF, this one contains photos and a list of known works by Bechler.

Bechler is the first Moravian composer in America

for whom we have an actual photograph!

Page 9: Moravian Music Foundation - GuideStar

2010 ANNUAL REPORT Page 9

Our recording library also grows… “Glory to Him Who Is the Resurrection,” our third “sampler” CD, is available at no charge! This is intended to

help introduce Moravian music to those not already familiar with it. It includes tracks from our most recent recordings and performances, and we’d love to send you multiple copies for your friends, civic and church groups, or local classical-music radio stations!

Once He Came in Blessing, the Moravian Lower Brass Christmas CD, was released in early November, and sales have been nothing short of astounding. The CD featured 58 players representing many different Moravian congregations, and we’ve been asked to consider producing a Lenten/Easter CD. We would love to have participants from all around the North American Moravian Church, so watch for the announcements of recording dates! Photo right: Getting ready to record at Salemtowne

Administration and Board News

The Moravian Music Foundation Board of Trustees implemented a new organizational structure in 2010, replacing the former committees with ten “teams”: five Mission Teams and five Support Teams. Each board member serves on one of each, so that each person is involved in a direct fashion with the ongoing programs and mission of the organization and with the “nuts and bolts” of the administration of a nonprofit organization. The following excerpt from MMF’s Operations Manual describes this new Board structure, which is “up and running” effectively!

Standing committees are of two types: “Mission Teams” and “Support Teams”. The Mission Teams are involved with carrying out the programmatic work of the Moravian Music Foundation. Support Teams continue the necessary administrative and management work of the institution.

Mission Teams

Research, Publications, and Recordings is responsible for a long-range plan of research, editing, and publications, including such things as the Moravian Star Anthem Series, CD recordings, articles in various ecumenical publications, and other print and audio products.

Education and Training develops and oversees educational opportunities for Moravian pastors and musicians, including a Moravian Musicians’ Network, curricula for Schools of Music and Worship, materials and leader training for workshops.

Events oversees concerts, camps, works with the Moramus and Unitas Chorales, and is responsible for liaison with Moravian Music Festivals.

Communications and Development is our “public-relations” and “marketing” arm, with responsibility for “getting the word out” for Annual Friends Campaign, planned giving, audience development, contact with public radio stations, development of other products (gifts, pins), and communication with other provinces of the Moravian Unity and our ecumenical partners.

Special Projects oversees any special projects approved by the Board of Trustees.

Support Teams

Vision and Planning reviews MMF’s plan before and during every MMF board meeting, and reviews and updates MMF’s Operations Manual every two to three years.

Personnel shall be responsible for all aspects of personnel resources of the MMF, including but not limited to: position descriptions; annual performance evaluation of the Director; recommendations for salaries and benefits; personnel policies. This committee shall also constantly monitor relationships between the Board and the Staff. Annual performance evaluations of all other staff shall be forwarded to the Personnel Committee by the Director. The Personnel Team is also responsible for board development and training.

Financial Resources and Stewardship This committee shall be responsible for all financial matters of the Foundation. It shall initiate the preparation of the Annual Budget; concur on capital budgets; be responsible for providing annual audits, measures of fiscal accountability on Foundation expenditures; oversee the investment portfolio of the Foundation; monitor special funds of the Foundation; and recommend policies and procedures required to provide sound financial administration of the Foundation, or as requested by the Board of Trustees. This team’s work thus has three critical aspects: (1) budget, managing expenses to match projected income; (2) investments; and (3) income generation, working with the Mission Teams to maximize income.

Technology is responsible for overseeing MMF’s technological needs: website maintenance, music available for download, “virtual board meetings”, and so on.

Nominations and Awards is responsible for recruiting new board members and for seeking individuals whose musical accomplishments should be recognized via MMF’s awards.

The following new members joined the MMF Board of Trustees, with their service beginning in 2010:

 Nancy Beitel-Vessels, appointed by Bethlehem Area Moravians;

 Rose Ellen Bowen, appointed by the Southern Provincial Elders Conference;

Chancy M. Kapp, appointed by the Southern Provincial Elders Conference to complete the unexpired term of Lillian B. Shelton, who resigned at the conclusion of 2009.

We welcome these dedicated and gifted people to their new service!

2010 ANNUAL REPORT Page 11 At the fall meeting of the Board of Trustees, the board recognized with deep appreciation the conclusion of the service of the following trustees: Don Frey, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for his service during fiscal years 2003-2010. He has served on the Development, Finance, and Personnel committees, and as Vice-President of the Board.

Gordon Sommers, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, for his service during fiscal years 2003-2010. He has served on the Development and Personnel Committees, and as Vice-President of the Board.

Randy Gibbs, of New Philadelphia, Ohio, for his service during fiscal years 2001-2010. He has served on the Development, Long-Range Planning, Music, and Personnel Committees.

John Yarbrough, of Raleigh, North Carolina and Charleston, South Carolina, for his service during fiscal years 2003-2010. He has served on the Development, Finance, and Personnel Committees.

We thank these dear friends for their committed and fruitful service!

How does the MMF Board work? The following excerpt from the MMF Operations Manual describes how we get these wonderful, dedicated people!

a. The Board of Trustees consists of no less than 21 and no more than 28 members. Of these, some are appointed and some are elected.

b. Appointments: Three members of the Board are appointed by each of the following Moravian Church bodies: the Salem Congregation; Bethlehem Area Moravians; Provincial Elders of the Northern Province; and Provincial Elders of the Southern Province.

c. Elections: No less than 9 and no more than 16 “at-large” members are elected by the Board of Trustees. These may or may not be members of the Moravian Church.

d. Length of term: Each appointment or election is for an initial term of four years. A Trustee may serve for two consecutive four-year terms, after which he/she is eligible for reappointment or re-election after a hiatus of one year.

Like most nonprofit organizations, we’re always on the lookout for dedicated board members with a variety of skill sets. Let us know if you know someone (even yourself!) who might be interested in learning more!

Volunteers to the Moravian Music Foundation in 2010

We have made every effort to ensure accurate and complete information in the following lists of volunteers and donors. Please do let us know if we have inadvertently omitted someone, spelled your name incorrectly, or

otherwise missed the mark. Thank you!

Volunteers to MMF serve as board members, as office assistants, as hosts and hostesses for events, as performers, as cooks and caterers, as library assistants, as researchers, as typists for programs … you get the idea! If you’d like to share your time and abilities with us (whatever they may be), please contact either office, and we’ll find a “home” for you!

MMF Named Funds

Through the generosity of individuals and foundations, specially designated funds have been established with the Moravian Music Foundation. Some are part of our general endowment, with their income going to support the Foundation’s general operating expenses. Others are special project funds, with income (and in a few cases, some of the principal) used for the expenses of particular projects or aspects of the Moravian Music Foundation’s mission. Additional contributions to these funds are gratefully accepted, and if you would like to discuss the establishment of a new named fund with MMF, please contact Nola Knouse at the Foundation’s Winston-Salem office. Permanently Restricted Funds, Held by Other Entities, are funds that are managed by the Moravian Church’s Northern Province Treasurer, Southern Province Treasurer, or other money manager, with benefits to MMF. In this category are included gift annuities and charitable-remainder trusts of which we are aware.

• Robert T. Brown Fund (Northern Province): MMF receives a portion of the income from this fund. • C. T. Leinbach Fund (Southern Province): income is paid to MMF for operating expenses, and up to a certain

amount of the principal may be used per fiscal year if needed for operating funds. • The Harold and Elizabeth Vogler Fund (Salem Congregation): MMF receives a portion of the income from this

fund. • Charitable remainder trusts and gift annuities set up by a number of individuals and held by other money

managers.

Permanently Restricted Funds, Invested, Yielding Unrestricted Income, are those we often refer to as “endowment” funds. These are invested with the accumulated income available for any purpose of the Foundation.

Donors to the Moravian Music Foundation in 2010

Gifts to the Moravian Music Foundation may be designated for a specific project you’re interested in. Undesignated gifts are placed where most needed – in our annual operating fund -

and all gifts to the Moravian Music Foundation are tax-deductible. Many corporations will match gifts given to the Moravian Music Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation –

don’t miss this chance to double your gift!

In order to meet our budget we must count on the whole range of giving that is possible based on the various financial capacities of those who share our goals and mission.

We are deeply appreciative of every gift, no matter the size; all of our donors are dear to our hearts! Thank you for sharing in our mission!

We received a number of gifts in January of 2011 that may have been intended for our 2010 Annual Fund. However, these gifts were postmarked after December 31, 2010, and will be included in the 2011 campaign.

Thank you very much!
