Bidding Prayer (concluding with The Lord’s Prayer spoken in unison)

Beloved in Christ, at this Christmastide let it be our care and delight to hear again the

message of the angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem and see this

thing which is come to pass, and the Babe lying in a manger.

Therefore let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of

God from the first days of our disobedience unto the glorious Redemption brought us by

this Holy Child.

Page 3: Calvin Christian Reformed Church December 17, 2017 5:00 PM · PDF fileO Come, O Come, Emmanuel Mark Hayes Flute Prelude In dulci jubilo arr. David Overton and James Galway ... Christ,

But first, let us pray.

We pray for the needs of the whole world; for peace on earth and goodwill among all

his people; for unity and brotherhood within the Church he came to build, and especially

in this our congregation. (Silent prayers)

And because this would rejoice his heart, let us remember in his name the poor and

helpless, the cold, the hungry, and the oppressed; the sick and those that mourn, the

lonely and the unloved, the aged and the little children; all those who know not the Lord

Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his heart of love. (Silent prayers)

Lastly, let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us, but upon another

shore, and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in

the Word made flesh, and with whom in the Lord Jesus we are one for evermore. (Silent

prayers)

These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the Throne of Heaven, in the

words which Christ himself has taught us:

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.

For yours is the kingdom and the power

and the glory forever. Amen.

Bidding Carol: Sing Alleluia Text and Music: Francis Patrick O’Brien

Dark is the night and deep are the shadows, quiet the baby bathed in lantern light;

hushed are the sound of cattle and shepherds; sweet is the music the angels bring this

night.

Sing Alleluia, sing Alleluia, welcome the Savior, the promise of new life.

Sing Alleluia, sing Alleluia, all of creation, sing this night.

Who would believe that here in a manger God comes among us as a tiny child;

see in his eyes the glory of heaven; hear in his laughter the joy of God on high.

Great is the joy of Mary, his mother; great is the joy of Joseph by her side.

Great is the joy of all those in darkness; here lies the Savior so soon to die and rise.

Hope for the poor, release for the captive, love for the outcast, light for weary eyes,

word that brings life, embracing humanity: Jesus, companion, be born into our lives.

The First Lesson God announces in the Garden of Eden that the seed of woman

shall bruise the serpent’s head.

Genesis 3

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

Congregation: Thanks be to God.

Choir Carol: From the Apple in the Garden

Text: Shirley Erena Murray Music: Roy Hopp

From the apple in the garden to the manger and the star,

from the rainbow and the promise to the moment where we are,

you are our hope, loving God.

From the manna in the desert to the breaking of the bread,

from the hunger of the ages to our hunger to be fed,

you are our hope, loving God.

From the prisons of the prophets to the growing light of day,

from the death within the darkness to the stone that rolls away,

you are our hope, loving God.

From the curse of Eve and Adam to the blessing of the Christ,

from the spirits of division to your Spirit in our midst,

still be our hope, loving God.

Isaiah 9

Handbell Carol: ‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime Music: Matthew Prins

‘Twas in the moon of wintertime, when all the birds had fled,

that mighty Gitchi Manitou sent angel choirs instead;

before their light the stars grew dim, and wondering hunters heard the hymn:

Jesus, your King, is born; Jesus is born! In excelsis gloria!

Within a lodge of broken bark the tender babe was found,

a ragged robe of rabbit skin enwrapped his beauty round.

And as the hunter brave drew nigh the angel song rang loud and high:

Jesus, your King, is born; Jesus is born! In excelsis gloria!

O children of the forest free, o sons of Manitou,

the holy child of earth and heaven is born today for you!

Come, kneel before the radiant boy who brings you beauty, peace and joy:

Jesus, your King, is born; Jesus is born! In excelsis gloria!

Choir Carol: Lumen Christi

Text and Music: Jayne Southwick Cool

Lumen Christi.

The people who walked in darkness will see a bright light.

The light will shine on those who live in the land of great darkness.

There was a messenger from God and John was his name;

spreading the truth about the light was his claim to fame.

For John was not that light; God sent him only to bear witness to that light.

The light will shine on those who live in the land of great darkness.

The real light, which shines on everyone,

was coming into the world—God's own beloved Son.

The light shines in the dark,

And darkness cannot grasp the meaning of that light.

Lumen Christi, the light of Christ!

Choir Carol: There Shall a Star Come out of Jacob (from “Christus”)

Text: Numbers 24; Psalm 2; Philipp Nicolai Music: Felix Mendelssohn

There shall a star come out of Jacob, and a sceptre shall rise out of Israel,

with might destroying princes and cities.

As bright the star of morning gleams,

so Jesus sheddeth glorious beams

of light and consolation.

Thy word, O Lord,

radiance darting, truth imparting, gives salvation.

Thine be praise and adoration!

Lighting of the Christ Candle

Choir Carol: Christmas Night Text and Music: John Rutter

Softly through the winter’s darkness shines a light,

clear and still in Bethlehem on Christmas night.

Round the stable where a virgin mother mild

watches over Jesus Christ, the holy child.

Shepherds kneel in adoration by his bed;

seraphim in glory hover round his head.

Wise men, guided by the leading of a star,

bring him gifts of precious treasure from afar.

Choirs of angels sing to greet his wondrous birth:

Christ, our Lord, in human form comes down to earth.

“Glory to God in highest heaven,” their joyful strain;

“Peace on earth, goodwill to all,” the glad refrain.

Lullaby! The child lies sleeping; sing lullaby!

Safe in Mary’s tender keeping: sing lullaby!

Guardian angels keep their watch till break of day:

Lullaby! Sweet Jesus sleeps among the hay.

Alleluia! Let the earth rejoice today!

Christ is born to take our sins and guilt away.

Praise the Lord who sent him down from heaven above,

holy infant, born of God the Father’s love.

Handbell Carol: What Is This Lovely Fragrance? Music: Fred Gramann

What is this fragrance softly stealing? Shepherds! It sets my heart astir.

Never was sweetness so appealing; never were flowers of spring so fair!

Be not affrighted, shepherds, lowly! Hearken the angel of the Lord,

bearing a message glad and holy, shedding a radiance all abroad!

Choir Carol: Where Is the Newborn King?

Text: Matthew 2 and Anonymous German (1543) Music: Andreas Hammerschmidt

Where is the newborn King of Israel, the King of Jewry?

He lies here, in Bethlehem, in the land of Judah.

For we have seen his star before us, from Eastern homeland,

and have come to adore him.

He lies here in the manger small, his majesty proclaimed to all, Alleluia.

O wonder of all wonders, who is this lovely child so small?

He is the King of all kings who shall reign over all;

the Lord is he, Lord of all lords.

He is Jesus, the mighty King of all.

O my Jesus, thou king who shall reign over all, thou Lord over all lords.

O Jesus, my Jesus, thou art mine; I am thine.

For such a gift we thee adore, this day, henceforth, forevermore, Alleluia.

The Seventh Lesson St. John unfolds the great mystery of the Incarnation.

John 1

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

Congregation: Thanks be to God.

Choir Carol: In the Bleak Mid-winter

Text: Christina Rossetti Music: Harold Darke

In the bleak midwinter frosty wind made moan,

earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;

snow had fallen snow on snow,

in the bleak midwinter long ago.

Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain;

heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign:

in the bleak midwinter a stable-place sufficed

the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

Enough for him, whom cherubim worship night and day,

a breast full of milk and a manger full of hay;

enough for him, whom angels fall down before,

the ox and ass and camel which adore.

What can I give him, poor as I am?

If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb,

if I were a wise man i would do my part,

yet what I can I give him, give my heart.

Candle Lighting

The congregation shall rise to light their candles and to sing the closing carols.

Candlelight will be passed from the end of each pew to every person in the congregation,

representing the way that the Light, which is Jesus, has come into the world.

Please take care to tip only the unlit candles to avoid dripping wax.
