Garden City Golf Club announced on 1 April that an extension contract has been signed between the course and global sports and media giant IMG for a minimum of another three years.

Widely recognized as the leading international golf course management company in the Asia Pacific region, the IMG team regularly makes visits to Garden City Golf Club to provide advice on agronomy, staff training, food and beverage and golf operational matters, all to a 5-star standard.

At the signing of the contract extension, Vice President of IMG, Paul Burley said: “IMG is delighted to sign an extension

ANGKOR GOLF RESORTANOTHER PRESTIGIOUS AWARD FOR

The 4th Asia Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC) took place in Jakarta, Indonesia from 27-30 April 2015 with the purpose of bringing buyers and suppliers of the golf tourism industry together to meet and talk business on a regional level.

Cambodia’s delegations to the convention consists of Angkor Golf Resort, Phokeethra Country Club, PSD Travel and Explorers House Travel and Tour.

As part of the AGTC, the IAGTO Excellence Awards were hosted to recognize the outstanding achievement of golf courses and golf destinations in the Asia Pacific and Middle East regions. Angkor Golf Resort was among one of the golf courses to receive the IAGTO Diamond Award category.

CITY GOLF PAR 3CHALLENGE 2015

City Golf is a lovely, pitch and putt city course that has tricky, challenging and interesting holes which can surely help golfers improve at all skill levels. The course is usually open until 10:00 p.m. and the flood lights brighten the course perfectly. Every hole has plenty of sand traps, water and challenging pin placement.

Living and working in Phnom Penh, it is never easy to escape the daily chaos and traffic to enjoy a nice and relaxing round of golf. Add in the often healthy green fees charged at some of the most prestigious golf courses in Phnom Penh, a regular round of golf is more of a luxury than I’d like. Due to this, I find myself more often than not hopping on the bike and making a quick trip to City Golf after work to hit some balls on the driving range and then play their lovely pitch and putt course under flood lights. I find this to be the perfect way to wind down and recharge my batteries.

The main skill to lowering ones handicap is mostly attributed to how many greens in regulation a golfer can score. The more greens in regulation, the lower the handicap. So when a golfer has the opportunity to hit the green from a fairway lie, he needs to be able to make that shot consistently. City Golf helps you work on just that. With holes ranging from 138 yards to 72 yards on small and tricky greens, one can work on his pitching, swing control and what types of shots produce the most consistent results.

With a very reasonable price of $15 a round, every golfer receives 100 balls for the driving range before 5:00 p.m. and 50 after. This gives everyone the chance to loosen up, get the blood flowing and practice their short game. A practice putting and chipping green is also present and kept in good condition. City Golf has worked very hard to create a very good practicing ground for one’s short game.

After a few rounds at city golf, I was made aware that there is a monthly golf tournament held at City Golf and I felt confident enough to measure my progress with others.

The tournament was held on a Sunday morning with a 7:00 a.m. tee off. I either like to play my rounds early mornings or late night to escape the Cambodian sun as much as possible, so I was excited for a fresh morning. After the mandatory morning pork and rice, I arrived at the course and was greeted by my caddy and 100 practice balls. This was a perfect way to start the morning and get loosened up for the day. The tournament consisted of two rounds at the 9-hole course. The course was in excellent condition and the pins were as tricky as I have seen them there. City Golf was as enjoyable as ever on this morning and I was challenged with some truly exciting approach shots.

We started the day with a shot gun tee off. I was surprised at the overall level of players in the field and the round went very smooth with no one having to wait for other flights.

After an exciting round of Golf with some fun challenges sponsored by TELA, we made our way back to the club house for the buffet lunch. I must say the food was excellent, with nice wine, beer and soft drinks all included in the tournament fee of only $48.

After lunch we had a fun but brief awards ceremony, where Ly Kea came out on top of the pack again with a total score of 2 under, followed by the always entertaining lucky draw. The prizes were of good quality, mostly golf related with some other very interesting goodies, such as internationally certified engine oil from TELA. The second to last place was rewarded with ten free rounds of golf at City Golf which I thought was a great idea. I am sure the winner is enjoying his free rounds as we speak.

All in all, I must say I really enjoyed City Golf’s tournament. City Golf is the best practice course in Phnom Penh and the tournament gave my practice the competitive edge to challenge both my golf game and mental strength. I can whole heartedly recommend City Golf to anyone living in Phnom Penh. The tournament was a fun event and after some more practice, I will join again and try to win. Even that gets easier with practice.

ការបរត Buaya Major 2015 បតវបានឡរៀរចឡ�ើងឡនៅ ឯ Garden City Golf Club កាលើថងៃទើ ៧ & ៨េននា ឡដាយោម នអណាឡបរៅើ Buaya Club េលលនឯងឡ�ើយ។ អវើណដលនឡសសអើេមវើឡនរះ គវាជាណផេយថនណតបតា ដអសាច រយររស Buaya Club ណដលេននធាល របានេេាន ឡរៀរចេមវើបរត សេើណតេយណេឡ�ើយ សបមារសមាជ ររសេលលនតាងើបានចារឡណើតកាលើ ១៥ឆេរន។

The Buaya Major 2015 was held at Garden City Golf Club on March 7 & 8 by none other than the Buaya Club themselves. What’s really special about this event is the fact that it is a part of an ongoing record of the Buaya Club that has yet to miss hosting competitions, even for a single month, for its member in its 15 years of existence.

After battling over the course of two days, it was Sammy Chan who picked up the victory and was declared champion, but the event doesn’t just end there. A party to celebrate the competition was organized in the evening at the Elephant Blanc Resort where this year’s winner was handed the championship trophy by last year’s champion, Roland Bala.We caught up with golf enthusiast Kelvin NG, founder and president of the Buaya Club, to learn more about the Buaya Club.

“I’m just a social golfer who loves to play and promote the sport of golf in Cambodia and the reason is very simple. It’s no fun to play golf by yourself, you need to play with someone to make it worthwhile. Thus, Buaya Club was formed over 15 years ago in Cambodia for the common interest of golfers to enjoy this wonderful game of golf.” said Kelvin.

Thai Country Club is an 18 holes par 72 course designed by Denis Griffiths. The course features immaculate conditions, neo-classic design and offers great variety from hole to hole. The abundance of water and sand hazards provide a great challenged even for a skilled golfer. The 7,157-yard course, from the professional tees, was tested during the 1997 Asian Honda Classic won by Tiger Woods.

Redesigned by Lee Schmidt of Schmidt-Curley in 2003, MuangKaew Golf Course features 18 tournament speed Tiff-Eagle greens which are mostly elevated along with a great golf course conditions. Their normal green speed is 10.5 to 11.5 feet on the stimpmeter and provides a real challenge for the amateurs with smooth and fast putting surfaces. The goliath project started in 2010 when the Union Group signed a contract with the Royal Government of Cambodia and construction began at the end of 2011. With an area the size of 360 KM2, a mega city is in the process of surfacing in the Province of Koh Kong.

“In Asia, the tourism industry is growing and coastline value is also increasing. We have found that Koh Kong is rich with stunning nature and beautiful coastline. As such, we decided to invest here and now it has proven that our decision is correct. “Currently the road leading to Dara Sakor is connected to the Cambodian national road and to make it more convenience for our visitors, there will be an (international) airport as well as transportation to and from Sihanoukville via the sea. the initial stages of the development is a 54 hole golf resort which includes a Links Course, Mountain Course and an Ocean Course. The aforementioned Ocean Course, which top government officials tested its first 9 holes last October, is the first of the 3 courses to be finished and is currently set to accept golfers.

We had the opportunity to test out the completed Ocean Course to give you our thoughts and experience while playing this first ocean view course in Cambodia. While the Dara Sakor Golf Course is undoubtedly the most ambitious golfing project in Cambodia, it sets itself apart from any other by its distinctive design and setting.

The course has been developed on the Koh Kong coast-line and is flanked by both mountainous jungle and the beautiful Gulf of Thailand. The location does a lot more for the golfer than impress with its breathtaking views. The steady westerly breeze from the sea and cold humid air coming down from the rainforest help to keep the course at a very comfortable temperature. This was especially crucial as we played the course in late May, a notoriously hot month in Cambodia.

The façade of the hotel is kept in the French colonial style, and makes for an impressive backdrop over the front 9. The course itself is a par 72, 7339 yard experience that is beautifully sculpted into its natural habitat. The course’s design is very unique due to the fact that the front 9 and back 9 play as almost two separate courses.

The layout of the front 9 follows a style traditionally associated with American courses. The opening 5 holes take you into the forested hillside with long fairways lined by thick woods and large trees. The final 4 holes take you back down towards the coast and open up. The flags are visible from the tees and invite players to pull out the driver and go for it. Fairway bunkers are plentiful and ensure the course remains tricky, yet distance is extremely helpful.

The opening hole, a 619 yard par 5 dog leg, bordered by bunkers on both sides and formed around the dominant water hazard is a challenging first hole for the best of golfers. If you are lucky enough to hit a long and straight drive, the pin will seem tantalizingly close. Unfortunately one will need to carry 225 yards of water to stay dry. This will force most golfers to choose the tight lay up into a narrow fairway protected by bunkers in front and behind, offering the easiest line into the tight three tiered green.

Another stand out is the challenging 4th. After a rigorous uphill battle rewarded by the stunning panoramic views off of the third green, the course immediately pulls you back into a long narrow fairway, tunneled by trees and dense thicket allowing no margin for error. Your approach on this par 4 is a downhill mid iron into the continually narrowing fairway that transitions to a tricky two tiered green.

The 8th hole is the longest par 3 of the Ocean Course. With 222 yards, it makes for a risky shot into a green well shielded by bunkers. The hole is made somewhat more accessible for higher handicapped golfers by having a small fairway slightly shorter to the right, giving a chance for saving par.The back 9 are much more technical and take more inspiration from European courses. They are designed to force players to lay-up, and many tee shots are made with irons, hybrids or fairway woods. The first shot needs to be placed perfectly to give golfers a chance to attack the green on the approach. An inaccurate tee shot makes these holes incredibly hard and saving par a near miracle. The greens are more protected by bunkers and water, punishing any slice, hook or misjudgment in distance. The scenery is not as impressive as the front 9; instead the course itself is the star attraction.

The 10th hole welcomes you to this change of pace from the front 9 with a short par 4. The tee shot is a lay-up which needs to be straight, to avoid the trees to the left and perfectly weighted to stay out of the gully. Even with a perfect first shot, you are still faced with shooting over

trees into an uphill green which is only partially visible while taking the shot. Perfect distance control is vital once more to ensure any chance of par. The next few holes follow suit with added expanses of water.

The par 3 17th,is iconic as one needs to carry water and an enormous bunker to land the shot on the green. Bunkers engulf the green on 3 sides and no one wants to misjudge their shot and land in a seemingly never ending sand pit. Even if the green is reached in one, the putt can be extremely long and very difficult. This hole holds all heroic dreams of golfers, but can easily turn into a sandy nightmare.

The grand finale is the signature 18th. Rated as the hardest hole, it forces golfers to stay focused till the very end. Only the best of tee shots will give golfers the option of going for the green, but even then, it is a scary shot to say the least. The green is a peninsula built into the water hazard and one will need to weight a 210 yard shot perfectly to have any chance of landing it on the green. As it is a par 5, golfers can take a shorter shot to the next fairway for a slightly easier approach. However, the urge to end the round with your very own “Tin Cup” moment may be too strong for some to pass up.

In addition, if the roughly 12 hours of sunlight a day is not enough for your golf experience, the first 9 holes of the Ocean Course can also be played at night under bright flood light which provides a special kind of atmosphere. All in all, The Dara Sakor golf course was an extremely enjoyable course to play and was in remarkable condition considering it has yet to be fully opened to the public. Over the course of our 3 days visit, we had excellent caddies, witnessed their professional training first hand and can confidently say that players will not be disappointed with their service.

“Every golf course has its own different scenery but we are also quite unique. The golf courses in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap are all very good; however, we have ocean view course and a mountain course that will give people a very different experience from what they have seen so far in the country.” said Mr. Li Tao.

Indeed, this coastal paradise will certainly be a key player in the regional golf scene and tourism industry. We are sure golfers and non-golfers alike will enjoy the time that they will spend at the Dara Sakor Seashore Resort.

Cambodia’s leading amateur golfer, Ly Hong, denied a field of 80 golfers to become a second time champion of the Liberty Cup that was held on the 14 & 15 of March at Siem Reap.

This tournament was held over a 2-day period at Phokeethra Country Club and Angkor Golf Resort, with a practice round at Siem Reap Booyoung Country Club on the day before the official tee-off. Golfers from Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Indonesia, Netherlands and Cambodia joined in to compete.

“My heartiest congratulations to Ly Hong to have managed to defend his title successfully albeit more difficult conditions and tricky pin positions” said Eushen Ng of Liberty Golf Services. “This year’s field is also more difficult as we’re joined by calibre players like SP Maniam who was 2014 Carlsberg Golf Classic champion and Eddy Ismail who was nett winner for the same tournament”.

The left-handed golfer accumulated a gross of 160 and sailed pass fellow countryman, Im Reahul by 6 shots who took the second position. Roszali Baharuddin, Malaysia’s Carlsberg Golf Classic National Champion in 2013 wrapped up the third spot.

“Liberty Cup 2015 was an excellent event which gave us a great chance to showcase the improvements we have made to the course. The greens were in perfect condition and the players had nothing but compliments. It’s one of the only events that highlights all 3 of the courses in Siem Reap which helps to put us on the map as a golfing destination. Thanks to Candra from PSD Travel for putting everything together and I look forward to seeing some familiar faces for Liberty Cup 2016.” said Robert Turvey, Golf Operation Manager of the Phokeethra Country Club.

Daljit Singh Bhagwan Singh from Malaysia bagged the Senior division title with a whopping gross of 149, who teed off from the white tees. Ong Gim Hong on the other hand emerged as the Lady’s Champion with an impressive 167 from the 11 women field of this tournament.

The tournament concluded with the Prize Presentation Dinner held at Angkor Palace Resort. Mr. Candra Tanpatti, co-organiser and PSD Travel General Manager, said “All in all, we’re very pleased with the turn out with the event and especially supports from sponsors/partners like Carlsberg Malaysia, Srixon Sports Asia, Titoni, Transview and the media as well. The next leg will be scheduled to be in Vietnam where we have an operation office since last year”.

Being an avid golfer in Cambodia, I had heard many great things about the Angkor Golf Resort. So when the opportunity arose to play in their Inaugural 4 Ball Championship, it was just too good to turn down.

The competition was held over the course of 3 days, consisted of one practice round on Thursday and two tournament rounds on Friday and Saturday. This gave golfers of all levels a chance to familiarize themselves with the beautiful and challenging course as well as helped to lower scores over the course of the tournament.

After taking two days off from work, I flew into Siem Reap early Thursday morning. We made our way to the course, never having visited the resort before, I knew we were in for a real treat during the drive towards the club house.

The Sir Nick Faldo designed course boasts 7,209 yards of pristine fairways, vast seas of water, and multiple tiered greens that seem like oases in the desert. A true player’s course, from tee to green, each shot must be gauged correctly to avoid the constant threat of water, sand, tree lines and even other players!

Worry that you’re not good enough to play the course? Fear not, even for less accomplished golfers, the course offers accessible fairways while accuracy is rewarded with inviting lines to the pin and the course is always making you choose your next shot. Go for the green? Take on the water and sea of sand surrounding the pin? Or lay up to the hazards? The choice is yours.

Huge praise must be given to the tireless work the green keepers and management at Angkor Golf Resort went through to ensure the course was in fantastic condition, even with the extremely hot April weather. Greens were soft and receptive and ran very true. The resident caddies were excellent. Their knowledge of the course and wisdom personally saved me more than a few shots.

On course refreshments were taken care of by the superb Raffles team, keeping us fed and watered out on our pilgrimage. And of course, much thanks must be given to Tiger Beer who supplied ice cool beverages though out the tournament and Hard Rock Café for the fantastic cocktails.

After a great night at the Sokha Angkor Resort we enjoyed our fully comp’d breakfast buffet, the spread was vast. PSD Travel had arranged transportation to and from Sokha for the duration. Upon arrival, we were greeted by all the caddies lining the steps to the club house, accompanied by a traditional welcoming ceremony which includes drums and dancers. While everyone change into their battle gear in the locker room, our assigned caddies waited with smiles on their faces, eager and ready for the day to begin. Our buggies were stocked with ice cool Aquarius to keep us hydrated for the day ahead.

The competition was a shotgun start, using the better ball format. Upon completing our first competitive round, we arrived at the club house to an excellent spread and variety of food, courtesy of Raffles for lunch and after a few Tiger beers, the bus arrived to take us back to Sokha. Once I had relaxed for a few hours, I attended the FCC sponsored Gala Dinner in a wonderful venue based around their courtyard which looked fantastic. The food was top quality, catering to all sorts of cuisines, showing the diverse player pool the competition had attracted.

I went to bed looking forward to my final round at this fantastic course. Opportunistic about our chances, having finished 5th after the first day.

After an odyssey exploring all the course had to offer, we were greeted to another Buffet lunch by raffles and ice cold Tiger Beer.

When the scores were counted, the prize giving started. First up were the novelty prizes such as longest drive, nearest to the pin and others for both ladies and men. Prizes included golf apparel, balls and other goodies. Then came the Best Gross and Net prizes. Best Gross went to the Indian cousins, Amish Jaitha and Khusaal Thackersey, with an excellent round of 142 over the two days. 1st, 2nd and 3rd best net scores were recorded by an impressive showing from the

Cambodian teams, showing real promise for the future of golf in the Kingdom. The prizes were very desirable and included luxury golf holidays sponsored by Raffles Grand D’Angkor, Anantara and Park Hyatt. In addition, different golf equipments from Fenix Golf and Volvik were up for grabs.

In summary, the Angkor 4 Ball Championship was an excellently organized tournament, held at a truly fantastic course, with a large field of talented golfers from around the region. I would recommend anyone to attend an event hosted by Angkor Golf Resort as it was one of the best tournaments I have participated in Asia.

The competition will be using the Stableford Point System which Amish Jaitha of India was crowned last year’s champion after an impressive and consistent performance that produced rounds of 71 and 72, totaling his combined points to 77, giving him the victory over former champions such as Ly Hong, Donald Bland and Michael Moir.

“It’s quite early to be sure if I can make it to the Angkor Amateur Open, but yes as of now, I will be defending my title in August.” said Amish after he was asked whether he would be defending his title or not. As it currently stands, we are still uncertain just how many of past champions will return to compete.

We also asked about his expectation, especially after his recent victory at the Angkor 4 Ball Championship, in which he answered: “The four ball championship was a great team effort between my partner and I. On the first round I played very well, but the heat got to me the next day and my partner played very well.”

“The course suits my game and I hope I can practice hard beforehand to be in good form for the event. The weather should be slightly better than in April. Of course, I once again believe that it’s a great competitive event and very well organized, so I hope to do well once again.” he added.

For us, Amish is most certainly one of the favorites to win; however, it seems like Ly Hong might have something to say about that. The left handed golfer has confirmed his entry to the tournament and has set his sight on taking back the trophy that he won two years ago.

“I’m not worried about the competition, the most important thing is to train hard. Last time I was very busy and didn’t get much training done. This year I am focus and I hope I can win again.” said Ly Hong who had just successfully defended his Liberty Cup title earlier in March.

The competition is as fierce as ever and we are very much looking forward to this event. We all hope to see you there at the beautiful grounds of Angkor Golf Resort from the 7th to 9th of August.

GOLF… IT’S ALL IN YOUR HEAD

Throughout my inputs for Cambodia Golf Today, you as the reader will see a common question arise, “What’s your purpose?” or “For what purpose?” This should be something that you ask yourself repeatedly. It answers the WHY question giving you direction and motivation. So, why do we play sports? For what purpose?

Some people profess that it is engrained in us, it is part of our evolutionary past handed down from our time as hunter-gatherers chasing prey for food. Over the millennia, we developed things such as speed and strength. Possibly these traits were hardwired into us to impress others within our society, groups, clans, tribes. Obviously in the modern era there isn’t a need for us to hunt and gather. Therefore, we have lost that opportunity to get that “rush” to match strength or wit against another animal and that has been replaced in a game or sport where no one will die.

Modern sports are not all about strength and agility. Many sports are about community, building partnerships through teamwork, honing precision, and competing against one’s own self. Golf is just that sport, one that through every shot you are competing with yourself. This in and of itself creates a game externally and more so, internally with your mind.

Many elite athletes and sports people say the mental aspects of competing in a sport make the difference between being a champion or not. Throughout my series of articles, you will find insights into the skills, principles, and mindsets that many of the world’s best athletes and sports people use to be at the top of their game and to fulfill their potential.

Sports have been around for many millennia, dating back to the ancient Chinese, Egyptians and of course, the Greeks who invented the Olympic Games over 2,500 years ago. Why do we play sports? For what purpose have sports evolved and become a major portion of our lives?

This series of articles will be full of practical information and some exercises on how to use your mind more effectively, to gain more success in sport (golf), to get the best out of yourself and/or get the best out of your players as a coach, parent, or mentor.

These techniques focus on achieving results. If you are serious about achieving results, this series of articles will be for you!!

In the forthcoming articles, I will cover some of the main tenets for your success and a deeper understanding of the mental side of your game. To begin, here are just a few words or vocabulary we will be covering over the series:

Modeling- Modeling is the complex activity of capturing—in learnable, transferable code—the mental skills that make the difference between an excellent performer and an average performer, between an excellent athlete and an average one, between a person who is motivated to get the

best out of themselves in training and one who is not. You can model Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy or any of your favorite player.

Visualization- In sports, visualization can include any of the five senses: visual (sight), kinaesthetic (feelings), auditory (hearing), olfactory (smell), or gustatory (taste)…using the mind, athletes call up these images over and over, enhancing the skill through repetition or rehearsal in a manner similar to physical practice.

Focus- The power of concentration. What we focus on is what will become our reality. How important is this for the game of golf?

State Management- Refers to our mental and physical processes we experience at any moment. Our state depends on our interaction with the external environment, how well our bodies are functioning and our thinking (including emotions).

As golf in the Kingdom of Cambodia continues to grow, so does the need for qualified individual with proper training, experience and credibility. As such, Angkor Golf Resort has brought in Alan Martin, a PGA professional from Scotland, to fill the demands.

Martin played amateur golf out of Eyemouth and Dunbar Golf Club in Scotland before turning professional in 2006 and joining Dunbar Golf Club as a trainee assistant professional. He passed his final PGA exams and graduated from the British PGA degree program (certified by the University of Birmingham) in April 2010.

Shortly after completing his final qualifications, Martin became the Head Assistant Professional at the Duke’s Course at St Andrews which is part of the Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort and Spa. As a golf pro, the opportunity to work in St Andrews, the home of golf was like a dream comes true. His first year in town and the 2010 British Open was just around the corner.

It was a different challenge to his time at Dunbar Golf Club. St Andrews always has a great buzz and feel around the town, especially during the golfing season. Working for a world famous 5 star resort has hugely developed Martin as a PGA Professional and provided some unbelievable experiences. Even though The Duke’s has fewer members, as a resort golf, he was dealing more with corporate business, hotel guests and general visitor play.

While looking for a new adventure for the early part of 2015 and through a contact he made during the 2014 season in St Andrews, Martin landed a one month teaching position at the Royal Selangor Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This alone was a fantastic experience.

“Almost 10 years as a pro and with the experience/knowledge I have gained, I know I am ready to take the next step in my career. While in Malaysia the Head Pro Position at Angkor Golf Resort in Cambodia was advertised. I applied and made contact with the Director of Golf, David Baron, who is also a British PGA and made arrangements to visit in person as it is only a 2-hour flight from Kuala Lumpur. You could say right place right time.” said Martin about how he found Angkor Golf Resort.

“The Faldo Design Championship golf course is very impressive and when I visited it felt right… It was a similar feeling to when I applied for the job in St Andrews. Angkor Golf Resort is new and fresh and I’m excited to get started and looking forward to implementing my ideas and knowledge. South East Asia is a booming golf destination and a large part of the remit will be developing a new purpose built golf academy and driving range with an emphasis on growing the game from grassroots in addition to further developing the golf operation and service standards of the resort.” he added.

David Baron also had something to say about the new PGA Professional in town: “Alan is an excellent addition to the team and I’m looking forward to working with him. He brings a wealth of experience from both private and resort style facilities and I have no doubt that he will enhance the guest experience here at Angkor Golf. Alan was a highly reputable golf coach at the St. Andrews Resort and we look forward to offering these services to our guests here in Siem Reap. His appointment also provides us with the opportunity to further develop local golf at the grass roots level.”

The 115th U.S. Open Championship is scheduled for June 18-21 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington. Chambers Bay Golf Course is only eight years old and will be host to the first U.S. Open held in the Pacific Northwest.It will be unique and versatile. Those are two words you’ll be hearing a lot as the golf world starts to turn its collective focus toward the Pacific Northwest, which -- in terms of U.S. Opens -- has never happened.

As we inch closer to the start of the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, the interest grows, not only because this will be the first time Chambers hosts this national championship but simply because there are so many unknowns about this facility.

Never has the U.S. Open been played on a piece of land like this, a links-style golf course that can play so many different ways caddies should be paid double. People will complain about the course at times, sure, but that is part of what makes up the U.S. Open. The Open Championship is to golf what the World Cup is to football; the marquee event that grabs the whole world’s attention. For the golf fanatics in Cambodia there will be a familiar face in the field by the likes of Scott Hend who visited the kingdom last year during the Angkor Amateur Open where he conducted a private clinic and played a round on the second day of the event. Scott qualified himself for the Open Championship through the Thailand Golf Championship last December where he came in 5th.

Indeed this is a very exciting period in the world of golf and we look very much forward to see the actions and dramas that these events have to offer.

Playing Golf in the rain creates a number of Challenges as a golf course changes significantly in the rain. Thus, you would need to adjust your game accordingly. If you plan to play in the rain, be prepared to play in the rain. Pack all the equipments you will need to handle the wetness:

An Umbrella: Pack one of those big golf umbrellas in your golf bag to repel the rain drops away.

Good rain gear: Jackets, pants and headwear designed to be worn in the rain. Basically, an umbrella that you can wear.

Dry gloves or rain gloves: Rain gloves are very popular in the market. If you don’t have one, fear not. Just keep a few pairs of dry gloves in plastic bags and stuff them in your golf bag.

Dry towels: Keep several dry towels in your bag, they come in very handy at all time.

Waterproof shoes: Much like rain wear, having a pair of shoes that let water in can really mess up your mood and thus, your game.

When playing in wet course conditions, keep the following in mind:

• When it’s wet, the green will be slower. Put a bit more strength into your putts than you do when the green is in normal condition. One more thing to remember is that the ball will not curve as much.

• If you hit the ball into the bunkers, keep in mind that the sand will be more firm; therefore, you won’t have to swing as hard to get the ball out.

• The golf course will play longer because it’s so soft. The good news is that the fairways and greens get softer and more receptive.

• Try not to let the condition affect your normal routines. The best rain players always take their time and stay patient.

In case it rains unexpectedly and you are not prepared, head to one of the three kiosks on the course for shelter. There is plenty of food and drinks for you to chow down while you wait for the rain to pass over. So there you have it. If you’re going to try golfing in the rain, put on your gears and completely commit to play until the ball is in the hole at the 18th.
