CAMDEN CITY HIGH SCHOOL GUIDE2
Once the cards were developed, we took them back to the community to make sure the final design was as user-friendly as possible. Finally, the cards were integrated into this high school guide, a central source of information designed to help families learn more about Camden City high school options. There is information here to help you navigate the guide, and understand the information included on each school’s card.
If you have questions about the School Information Cards, or would like to share feedback on how we can improve them for next year, please email [email protected]. For any enrollment-related questions, please contact the Enrollment Office at [email protected]. We welcome the opportunity to continue to work with you to make the School Information Cards a useful tool for you.
Sincerely,
INTRODUCTION
FAMILIES CAN MAKE THE BEST CHOICES FOR THEIR CHILDREN WHEN THEY HAVE ALL THE AVAILABLE INFORMATION. That is why we have worked hard, in consultation with hundreds of parents and community members, to develop School Information Cards for every public school in Camden – including our District schools, renaissance schools, and charter schools.
Last year in the Camden Commitment I promised to provide an information card for every public school in the City. The individual cards will be available on the District’s and schools’ websites this spring, and the full Camden Schools Guide will be available at www.camden.k12.nj.us.
The cards were designed to give students, families, community members, educators, and administrators clear, apples-to-apples information about each of the public school options available in the city of Camden. With greater supports for all of our schools, having clear information is more important than ever.
The School Information Cards were designed based on feedback from the community. In our Let’s Talk About Great Schools campaign, we hit the streets and classrooms to ask parents, educators, and students what kinds of information they want to know about Camden’s public schools. We received over 475 responses through online and in-person surveys, and received helpful input during six community focus groups. One thing we heard clearly is that no one thing makes a school great. A great school is made up of great teaching and learning, well-prepared students, a safe and supportive school environment, and much more. I hope you see this feedback reflected in the School Information Cards.

TYPES OF SCHOOLS AND ENROLLMENT
TRADITIONAL HIGH SCHOOLSTraditional high schools are managed by Camden City School District (CCSD) and follow the curriculum set by the District. All students in CCSD have a neighborhood high school at which they are guaranteed enrollment. For information on which traditional high school a child is zoned to, see page 4. For more information on Camden’s traditional high schools, see the School Information Cards starting on page 7.
MAGNET SCHOOLSMagnet schools are managed by CCSD and serve students with a particular style of learning or a common area of interest. For more information on Camden’s magnet programs, see the School Information Cards starting on page 11. For enrollment information and to access magnet schools’ 2015-2016 applications, visit each school’s website, listed in the School Information Card, or visit the ‘Schools’ section on the CCSD website at www.camden.k12.nj.us.
CHARTER SCHOOLSCharter schools are independently operated public schools that are governed by an independent board of directors and overseen by the NJ State Department of Education. For more information on Camden charter high schools, see the school information starting on page 17. For charter school enrollment information, visit each school’s website.
ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMSAlternative education programs are designed to support students in meeting their academic needs and obtaining a high school diploma. For a complete list of alternative education programs for secondary students in Camden and how to request enrollment in those programs, see information starting on page 21.
TECHNICAL SCHOOLSTechnical schools are public schools designed to provide students with technical skills and knowledge for specific career training programs. Camden County Technical Schools (CCTS) manages two high schools, the Gloucester Township Campus high school in Sicklerville, NJ, and the Pennsauken Campus high school in Pennsauken, NJ. Students living in Camden County can attend CCTS free of charge and transportation aide is provided. For CCTS enrollment information, visit their website at www.ccts.info.
INTER-DISTRICT SCHOOL CHOICE PROGRAM (OUT-OF-SCHOOL CHOICE)The U.S. Department of Education mandates that students who attend schools identified for school improvement, corrective action, or restructuring have the option to transfer to a public school or public charter school in another district. For a complete list of New Jersey choice districts, as well as application deadlines and resources, visit the following website: www.state.nj.us/education/choice.

CAMDEN CITY HIGH SCHOOL GUIDE 25
Academic Performance RatingEach school receives one of four academic performance ratings: Under Performing, Needs Improvement, Making Progress, or On Track. For high schools, this rating is determined from the school’s HSPA proficiency and graduation results (see definitions of these on the next page), compared to similar public schools in New Jersey. The group of similar schools are all public high schools in New Jersey where 80% or above of students receive free or reduced-price lunch. For high schools, this includes 51 schools in New Jersey (source: NJ DOE). To determine a school’s rating, graduation results are counted twice as much as HSPA results. See Appendix A for more detailed information.

Information on Page 1 Academic Performance
HSPA English Language Arts ProficiencyStudents can achieve one of three results on the HSPA test: Partially Proficient, Proficient, or Advanced Proficient. The SICs show the percentage of students in the school in grade 11 who scored Proficient or Advanced Proficient on the HSPA English Language Arts test. It also shows the percentage point change in proficiency from the previous year. For example, if a school’s 2014 proficiency is 25% and its change is +5%, that means that in the spring of 2014, 25% of students in the school achieved proficiency in English Language Arts, and that represents a five percentage point increase from the school’s proficiency results in 2013. In all cases, the most complete dataset available is used. For district schools, the source is the district’s test results file from NJ DOE. For charter and renaissance schools, the source is www.state.nj.us/education/data.
HSPA Mathematics ProficiencySee HSPA English Language Arts proficiency above; the same information applies to Mathematics.
Graduation RateThe graduation rate represents the percentage of students in the school’s cohort who met graduation requirements. It is based on the NJ DOE’s calculation of graduates, which can be found here: www.state.nj.us/education/data.

Information on Page 1 Academic Performance
Graduates Proficient on HSPAThe NJ Department of Education provides several ways students can meet the assessment requirement for graduation. Currently, students can pass HSPA or AHSA, the alternative exam, or a combination of both. Students who do not pass through HSPA or AHSA may graduate via an approved appeal to the NJ DOE. In addition, some students with IEPs are exempt from the assessment requirement for graduation. In the SICs, graduates proficient on HSPA shows the percentage of the prior year’s graduates who met the assessment requirement for graduation solely through HSPA, the most challenging way to meet this requirement.
Average SAT ScoresThe average SAT score is calculated based on the average total scores (critical reading, mathematics, and writing) of all students who participated in any test administration during the 2013-14 school year, as collected and calculated by the College Board. The range of scores for each section is 100-800, and the total maximum score is 2400.
SAT/ACT Participation RateSAT/ACT Participation Rate is calculated by the State and reflects the number of students who participated in any administration of either the SAT or the ACT during the 2013-14 school year divided by the total number of students eligible to take either test that year (defined as students in grade 12).

CAMDEN CITY HIGH SCHOOL GUIDE 29
SCHOOL VISITThe school visit is a half-day site visit and walkthrough by Camden educators. In addition to the District facilitator, each school visit includes two school-based educators (typically school leaders): one from a CCSD district school and one from a charter or renaissance school. Visitors use a checklist, shared with each school leader and participant in advance of the visit, to document observations as a group and individually.
At the end of the visit, the school visit team meets to determine a summary of the visit, which includes identifying areas of strength and growth they observed for the school. The school visit team then meets with the school leader to debrief the visit and share feedback. These visits allow principals and their leadership teams to receive real-time feedback, and provide a professional development opportunity to participants.

SCHOOL QUALITY RATINGThe school quality rating is a combination of a school’s academic performance rating and school visit rating, providing a picture of school quality that takes into account both academic progress based on the most recently available assessment results (Spring 2014), and instruction and school culture based on school visit observations (Fall 2014), as described above. Those ratings are combined (using the table below) to create the overall school quality rating.
In cases where the academic performance rating and school visit rating are the same, the school receives the same quality rating. In cases where the academic performance rating and school visit rating differ by one degree, the academic performance rating becomes the school’s quality rating. In cases where they differ by two degrees, the rating between the two becomes the school’s quality rating.

CAMDEN CITY HIGH SCHOOL GUIDE 37
SCHOOL COMMUNITY SURVEYThis section shows the results of the annual School Community Survey completed by students in grades 4-12, families, and school staff. It shows the most recent survey results, from fall 2014, as well as the change in results from the spring 2014 survey (online version). Results are shared in six categories, which are listed and described on the School Information Cards. In cases where charter and renaissance schools used a different survey, questions were aligned among surveys and matched to categories. Percentages represent the percentage of respondents who felt favorably about that category in regards to their school (net favorability). This section also includes the percentage of respondents who completed the survey.
