    CAMPMONTARA

    : Camp Montara. The site was also known as Point MontaraRadar Station J-80, San Mateo County, CA.

    IQCATIOW The site is on the northern California coast at Half Moon Bay in San MateoCounty approximately 15 miles south-southwest of San Francisco and approximately 37 milesnorthwest of San Jose, California (Figure1 and 2).

    : On 26 January 1943, theWar Department acquired 135.00 leased acresfrom McNee Company(a ranch located at the site property) and 22.60 leased acres fromHibernia Savings and Loan Society(HSLS). Total acreage acquired was 157.60. 2,052.84leased acres were scheduledto be leased from HSLS, however, that lease was cancelled.The site was primarily used as aradar site by the Army Air Force. Improvements to the sitewere constructed between 1943 and 1947, they included construction of two bunkers,concrete foundations for a radar tower, and presumeably an electric generator and a fuel oilunderground storage tank. Both leases were terminated in November 1947. Army Corps ofEngineers real estate records do not indicateif restoration was required.

    The site is currently owned by the State of California Department of Parks and Recreationand by several private property owners. The majority of the site is currently used as apublic park.

    V m A site visit was conducted on 05-06 February 1991 by Mr. Roger Norris andMr. Jenn-Yih Peng, theEarth Technology Corporation. Thesite visit team met with Mr.Chet Bardo, State Park Ranger. Mr. Norris presented a brief discussion of the DEW-FUDSprogram. Mr. Bardo was identifiedas the most knowledgeable person regarding the formerCamp Montara site area. Mr. Bardo then led the site visitteam on a tour of thearea.Mr. Bardo identified two DOD-build bunkers and concrete remnants of aradar towerfoundation. The DOD-built structures were abandoned by themilitary and not beneficiallyused since DOD terminated occupancy ofthe site in 1947. The site visitteam found noevidence of a former electric generator or underground storagetank.

    : BD/DR NOFA. The remaining DOD-built structures are nota structural, climbing or engulfment hazard.
