Why are we walking?Every human being is a child of God, created in God’s image, and deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Yet, in a global crisis, we are seeing the highest numbers of displaced people on record.

Every minute, 20 people are forced to flee war, persecution, natural disaster or poverty*. Often, they leave home with nothing, endure terrible conditions on their journey and are denied the protection and support they need in their chosen place of refuge.

Deadline: September By joining the Share the Journey campaign launched by Pope Francis, your school or group can step up and step out in solidarity with our global neighbours.

Your commitment to walk the world will show world leaders meeting for crucial discussions in September how much it matters to all of us that refugees and migrants are treated with dignity and respect.

URGENT We need your school to join others and walk around the world this summer! We’re aiming to walk 24,900 miles - the distance around the whole world.

Join us to show you care about the millions of people - 20 every minute - forced to flee their homes and make desperate journeys in search of refuge.

Every story is differentThere are refugees in many parts of the world. More people are on the move around the world today than ever before and each person has a different story.

New UN global agreementsTwo UN (United Nations) agreements, known as “compacts”, will be agreed by the end of 2018. They will shape how countries respond to migrants and refugees for years to come.

Pope Francis says this is a “unique opportunity” for Catholics to put pressure on governments to respond to huge levels of global migration.

We are calling for agreements that:

• respect human dignity, giving rights to citizenship and work

• protect vulnerable people

• support host countries, especially in the developing world, who welcome many refugees

• keep families together and enable divided families to reunite in safety

• tackle the reasons why people migrate, such as conflict and climate change.

It is very simple to Share the Journey!Order cards Order one campaign card per walker from cafod.org.uk/schools There are different cards for children and for young people.

God of mercy, with every step we make today,

we pray your love will fill our

hearts and move us deeply.

Open our eyes to see

the face of Christin all we meet along the way.

Amen.

For you, Lord, are close to the broken-hearted.

Pour out your Spiritupon world leaders.May they see the tragedies of our human family, and be moved to respond withwisdom, compassion and courage.

Open our eyes and heartsto the God-given dignity of all your people.Move us to welcome our neighbours,

and so bear witness to your love.

Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Halima and her family had to leave their country because of fighting.

They are now in a refugee camp in Bangladesh. They do not have a good diet. They have been surviving on just rice and potatoes.

How would you feel if you had only rice

and potatoes to eat?

Ruth’s storyFour-year-old Ruth was born in Yei in South Sudan. Her father, Malis, says: “In South Sudan we had a life. We had a lot of things.” But when two of Ruth’s uncles died in the civil war, Malis fled with Ruth and her three brothers to Bidi Bidi in Uganda.

Life in a refugee campBidi Bidi village has become a huge refugee camp.

Ruth’s father remembers: “At first there was no water, no firewood, and food was hard to get. Life here was very hard.”Water was trucked into the camp daily, but supplies were short. Women and children queued before dawn to fill containers. Now, boreholes have been drilled so that there are water pumps inside the camp.

Growing a better lifeCatholic charity, Caritas Uganda, gave Malis seeds and gardening tools. With money from selling his first crop of a vegetable called okra, he bought sandals for Ruth and her brothers as well as meat, fish and tomatoes to add variety to their diet.

Life is better than it was, but Ruth’s family looks forward to the day they can return to South Sudan.

We want justice for everyone. We call on world leaders

to make new global agreements that respect the human dignity of people on the move.

MOST IMPORTANTLY!Multiply the number of walkers by the distance walked. For example, if your walk was three miles long and 30 people took part – you would need to record 90 miles. Add your total mileage to our totaliser at: cafod.org.uk/schools

Every mile helps - THANK YOU!

At the start Each of us has been on a journey. Maybe we have come to live here from another town, city, or country. Perhaps our parents or grandparents came here to build a new life. Today we will make a special journey to walk alongside people around the world who are forced to flee their homes. As we share the journey, we will think about the difficult journeys people are forced to make.

In September, world leaders will meet at the United Nations to develop new global agreements on refugees and migration. To show them how strongly we want justice for our global neighbours, we are joining with other schools and parishes in England and Wales to walk the distance around the whole world - 24,900 miles.

[Hand out the cards]Look at the face of the person on your card and read what the card says. Among our group, we have different stories from people on the move. We will hear one of those now, and others during our walk.[Invite first reader to share one story]

Let’s pray together: [Use the prayer on your cards]

Please talk with each other about the questions on your card as we walk. Let us share the journey with arms wide open for our neighbours here and around the world.

Script for your walkThe walk[Stop at different places to read a story from one of the cards and to share some reactions. To make it more visual, you could display artefacts based on items mentioned in the stories.]

At the endWe have come to our journey’s end. Let’s hear our final story.

[Invite a final reader to share one story]Let’s stop and think about the stories we have heard… [pause] how we have felt… [pause] and what has given us hope.[Either share words or phrases in response, or remain silent]

Pope Francis says that this year is a ‘unique opportunity’ to call on world leaders to act with courage and compassion for people on the move. I invite you now to fill in your card.

[Hand out pens. Primary children keep their cards. Young people hand their leader the tear-off portion of their cards.]

Together we have walked [fill in number] miles today. Let’s follow the totaliser at cafod.org.uk/schools to keep track of how many miles are being walked… and encourage other people to walk too!

Let’s say a final prayer together:[Use the prayer on your cards]
