Policy for Bicycles and Vehicles Left on CampusPolicy for Bicycles Left on Campus Over the SummerAU Policy requires the removal of all unregistered, inoperable or abandoned bicycles from the campus. Campus Safety will attempt to contact the registered owners. If the owners are not located it will bepresumed that they have abandoned the property. Any unclaimed or abandoned bicycles not claimed withinthe 60-day holding period shall be disposed of.

Policy for Vehicles Left on Campus Over the SummerFor all students who are leaving campus for the summer, AU Policy requires the removal of all vehicles oncampus over the summer months unless the registered owner is present.

Dining Services Offers 5% Back Incentive, Loyalty CardDining Services is open to not only the Andrews community, but also to the greater Berrien Springs area. IFyou enjoy dining on campus, here are two great incentives to make it an even more affordable option.

5% Back For all those who open a Cafe Account with $400 or more, that individual will be given anon-refundable 5% account bonus. This cannot be redeemed for cash or returned to financialstatements at any time, hence the "non-refundable" description. If you are a full-time studentopening a Cafe Account you will also be saving another 6% by not having to pay tax on any mealsat Dining Services. With this 6% saved throughout the semester on top of the previous 5%, afull-time student with a Cafe Account can save a total of 11% throughout one single semester.

Loyalty Card ProgramOur Loyalty Card program is a new feature we offer to all those who have a Cafe Account. Account holderscan bring their Loyalty Card to the Terrace Cafe whenever they buy a meal. Once they have purchased a totalof ten meals, bring the card back to receive the eleventh meal free. This is the perfect program for anyonewho eats at the Terrace Cafe on a regular basis. You may only have one Loyalty Card at a time, and there isno limit to how many cards you can receive in a single semester.

Celebrating 75 Years: James White LibraryWednesday, May 1512:30 p.m., James White Library

The campus and community are invited to a birthday party for the James White Library on May 15,12:30–1:30 p.m., in the Library’s main floor gallery area. Former directors of the Library and key retireeshave been invited to participate in the celebration. All former employees, including former student workers,will be recognized. Merlin Burt, director of the Center for Adventist Research (CAR), will present a briefhistory of the library and the General Conference. Terry Robertson, Seminary librarian, will initiate a projectof taking oral history accounts about the library from current and former staff, as part of the celebration,which he’s hoping will reveal further details about the library’s development and contribution to AndrewsUniversity through the years. Birthday cake will be served at the conclusion of the event. Guests are also invited to view the new display in CAR that highlights 150 years of the General Conference.

The capstone event for the Library’s 75th anniversary will be an exhibit of the many and varied specialcollections of the Library, to be on display across campus in conjunction with Alumni Homecoming Weekend,Sept. 27–30, 2013. The exhibit will include artwork, mission artifacts and textiles, rare book collections,furniture of historical interest, and archived movie films of campus development.

We are currently working to build ateam of talented, committed students who will completely revolutionize student journalism on the AndrewsUniversity campus. Previous experience is preferred, but not required. All you must have is a passion for truth and storytelling –and good writing skills.

News EditorIn charge of finding and assigning stories about campus news – big events, policy changes, campusdisturbances, etc.

Ideas EditorThis section deals with opinions, perspectives, and controversial topics. This editor must be devoted tobalance, fairness, and quality in writing – and they’ll need to find writers can discuss issues intelligently everyweek.

Sports EditorThis person needs to be excited about AU Sports! The section includes Cardinal news, Intramurals, and othercampus athletics.

People EditorAndrews students are interesting and diverse. This section will tell their spotlight them and the interestingthings they’re doing -- whether that’s climbing a mountain, backpacking through Indonesia, or learning howto play the bagpipes. This editor must constantly look for fascinating people and tell their stories.

Arts & Entertainment EditorThis section spotlights local artists, reviews campus arts events, and includes reviews and musings on varioustopics related to entertainment and the arts.

Assistant Layout EditorContent doesn’t matter if it’s unreadable. This graphic designer will assist the Layout Editor in designing thenewspaper every week.

Multimedia ManagerResponsible for website content creation and maintenance. May also use Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, andother social media to promote the SM.

Business ManagerIn charge of managing the budget and, perhaps the most important task, making sure everyone gets paid!

Distribution ManagerThis person gets the paper from hot off the presses and into the hands of students. This job requires a lot oflegwork – and we’ll be trying to increase circulation this year.

Spring Commencement 2013Andrews University’s Spring Commencement, scheduled for the weekend of May 3–5, 2013, marks asignificant scheduling change. In order to provide more seating for graduates’ families, Commencement hasbeen split into three separate services by school/college. Previously, Commencement was separated into twoservices: one for undergraduate and the other for graduate degree conferral.

The new schedule is:8:30–10:30 a.m.: School of Health Professions; Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary11 a.m.–1 p.m.: College of Arts & Sciences2–4 p.m.: Department of Agriculture; Department of Aviation; School of Architecture, Art & Design; Schoolof Business Administration; School of Distance Education; and School of Education

Graduation weekend events begin Friday evening with the Consecration Service in Pioneer Memorial Churchand will continue with the Baccalaureate church services, Sabbath afternoon certification and dedicationservices, Sabbath vespers, the President’s reception and finally, the commencement services on Sunday, May5.

New Bible Commentary to be PublishedA major new Bible study resource sponsored by the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists andAndrews University is scheduled for release at the 2015 General Conference session in San Antonio, Texas,according to Andrews University President Niels-Erik Andreasen. The Andrews Bible Commentary, thechurch’s first concise, one-volume commentary, is intended as a coordinated resource with theAndrews Study Bible, released by Andrews University Press in June 2010. Purse Theft Ends in Recovery of Items, ArrestsOn Saturday, April 20, 2013, at approximately 4:18 p.m. a purse was stolen from inside of theHoward Performing Arts Center at Andrews University, which ultimately ended in the arrest of twosubjects and the recovery of the stolen items.

During the afternoon hours, three men were driving a silver 2003 Volkswagen on the campus ofAndrews University. Two are identified as Zachary Boomsliter of Berrien Springs (DOB: 5/1994) andJoshua Nunez of Eau Claire (DOB: 1/1994). The third subject is of Berrien Springs but is notpresently charged. Around 4 p.m. Joshua Nunez and the third subject went into the Howard to usethe restroom. The third subject returned to the car and waited with Boomsliter for Nunez to return.Boomsliter was the driver of the car. Nunez allegedly grabbed a purse from the auditorium andwhen the purse’s owner saw him, she yelled and alerted bystanders that her purse had been taken.When Nunez came running from the building with the purse he was being pursued by two bravebystanders. Boomsliter decided to drive away, leaving Nunez to be captured by his pursuers. Abystander secured Nunez until Campus Safety arrived. They held him until police, who werepursuing the getaway vehicle and the other two subjects secured them and returned to theUniversity.

Another witness saw the car driven by Boomsliter drive away and followed them off campus and into an areawhere they attempted to conceal themselves. Boomsliter lost control of the car while fleeing. The car wasseen striking and knocking down several mailboxes and a road sign on Hillcrest Ave. The pursuit ended in theparking lot of a local nursery, where the Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township Police Department took custodyof the subjects. They all returned to the University so officers could investigate the incident.

The stolen purse was recovered. A stolen phone from a separate incident was also recovered. The car wassearched and marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found and seized.

Zachary Boomsliter was lodged at the Berrien County Jail and charged at this time with reckless driving andpossession of marijuana.

Joshua Nunez was lodged at the Berrien County Jail and charged at this time for larceny from a person,larceny from a building, and receiving and concealing stolen property $200><$1000.

The third subject was released at this time pending further investigation.

This is an ongoing investigation being conducted jointly by the BSOPD and the Andrews University Office ofCampus Safety, and additional charges may be possible as the investigation continues.

“We wish to thank the brave citizens who involved themselves in this incident to help bring it to a successfulresolution with the arrest of the perpetrators and the recovery of not only the property they saw beingstolen, but ultimately other property that was later found to have been stolen,” said the release from ChiefMilt Agay of Berrien Springs Oronoko Township Police. “The BSOPD also wishes to acknowledge and thank theAU Office of Campus Safety for their assistance in this investigation, at the time of the incident and thecontinued follow up.”

The capstone event for the Library’s 75th anniversary will be an exhibit of the many and varied specialcollections of the Library, to be on display across campus in conjunction with Alumni Homecoming Weekend,Sept. 27–30, 2013. The exhibit will include artwork, mission artifacts and textiles, rare book collections,furniture of historical interest, and archived movie films of campus development.

Each year, the graduating classes have grown, bringing with them more family members who wish to attendCommencement. According to Dalry Payne, graduation coordinator, after the spring 2012 service theadministration decided to add one more commencement service to allow each graduate greater access totickets for family and friends. Currently, each graduate will be allocated a minimum of six tickets. Dependingupon the number of graduates who march, there may be more tickets available.

Online Master of Public Health IntroducedThe Department of Public Health & Wellness, formerly known as the Department of Nutrition &Wellness, has received approval to offer a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Nutrition and Wellness.The Board of Trustees approved both the department name change and new degree during their2013 spring meeting.

This new program is the first and only online MPH program in Nutrition and Wellness offered in thecountry. Offered at a 50% tuition discount, this new program will prepare health professionals forservice in the church and community by building knowledge and skills necessary to enhance thehealth of human populations and promote a healthy lifestyle through personal and communityefforts.

Emmanuel Rudatsikira, dean of the School of Health Professions, says the demand for public healthprofessions in the workforce continues to be high across the United States and globally. Citing informationfrom the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Rudatsikira says employment opportunities are expected togrow by 37% from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations (14%).

“This prediction translates into about 23,200 new jobs for public health professionals over the next 10 years,”says Rudatsikira. “According to the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), there are 62 accreditedonline public health programs in the United States. However, there are only two Master of Public Healthprograms in nutrition. Our program, with emphasis on vegetarian lifestyle and wellness, is unique andpresently the only one of its kind.”

Registration Opens April 15 for Summer Produce SubscriptionsThis summer you can have fresh produce delivered to your door for 20 weeks, courtesy of AndrewsUniversity Student Gardens. The program begins in mid June and continues through October.

Subscribers can choose between a full share of produce for $600 and a half share for $400. Each basketincludes at least six types of fresh produce, such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, broccoli, corn, kale, carrotsand cucumbers. In addition to the classic vegetables, this year Andrews Student Gardens will have optionsavailable to add fresh flowers and fruit to your baskets. Flowers will be an additional $40 increase for the 20weeks (cut and potted bouquets as seasonally available). Fruits will be a $100 increase for the 20 weeks(blackberries, raspberries, apples, peaches and melons as seasonally available). Weekly newslettersaccompany the baskets with fresh recipes and helpful information.

Delivery is free within a 15-mile radius of the campus, but those who prefer can pick up their share on Fridaymornings from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. at the local farm stand, which will be located at the Neighbor-to-Neighborparking lot at 9147 Hwy M-139 in Berrien Springs, Mich.

A major new Bible study resource sponsored by the General Conference ofSeventh-day Adventists and Andrews University is scheduled for release at the 2015General Conference session in San Antonio, Texas, according to Andrews UniversityPresident Niels-Erik Andreasen. The Andrews Bible Commentary, the church’s first concise, one-volume commentary,is intended as a coordinated resource with the Andrews Study Bible, released byAndrews University Press in June 2010.

Andreasen made the announcement about the new commentary on Monday, April 15,to delegates from around the world at the annual Spring Meeting of the GeneralConference Executive committee, held this year in Battle Creek, Mich., in observance of the 150th anniversary of the founding of theGeneral Conference.

The commentary project is coordinated by Andrews University Press, the world church’s only regularly established academic publishinghouse, with funding from Andrews and the General Conference, and oversight by a Project Committee of General Conference and Andrewspersonnel.

Andreasen said that, like the Andrews Study Bible, the Andrews Bible Commentary is intended specifically for the general reader, as wellas pastors and church elders providing basic Bible teaching in the congregation.

In making his announcement, Andreasen referred the delegates to a purpose statement for the commentary that had been approved bythe Project Committee. It states that the Andrews Bible Commentary “is a concise, one-volume exposition of Scripture written by faithfulscholars of the church as a companion to the Andrews Study Bible for lay readers, pastors, students, and teachers living in expectation ofthe Advent Hope.”

“This commentary is aimed to help the person in the pew. It is written in plain language,” Andreasen said. He told the delegates that thewriters had been instructed to write at the same reading level that they would write an article for the Adventist Review, the general churchpaper of the Adventist Church. “In some parts of the world, these two volumes—the Andrews Study Bible and the Andrews BibleCommentary—will comprise the entire theological library they will have, so we are taking this assignment very seriously,” he said.

Andreasen said that 60 writers, all Bible scholars from church institutions and organizations around the world, have been contracted towork on the commentary under the direction of a small editorial team. The general editor is Angel Rodriguez, former director of theBiblical Research Institute at the General Conference. The associate editors are Greg King (Old Testament), dean of the School of Religion,Southern Adventist University; Gerald Klingbeil (Old Testament), associate editor, Adventist Review/Adventist World; and John McVay(New Testament), president of Walla Walla University.

Andreasen said that some of the writers for the one-volume commentary have already completed their assignments. He assured GCPresident Ted Wilson that a small, printed sample of selected portions of the commentary will be available for the next full meeting of theGC executive committee at Annual Council in October, when Andreasen will give another progress report.

“We’ll hold you to that,” Wilson said. Andreasen thanked Wilson for the support of the General Conference in the production of both the Study Bible and the forthcomingCommentary. He said that these publications represent one of the many ways that Andrews fulfills its responsibility to serve the worldchurch. Staff at Andrews University Press have noted that when it is published and released in 2015, the Andrews Bible Commentary will haveabout 1,800 pages of commentary and helpful articles, about three times the original content of the Andrews Study Bible.

Over the years, there have been many myths and misconceptions concerning theHoward Performing Arts Center and we want to set the record straight. What followsis information you should know about the Howard Center; some is true, some is false,and some is just plain silly. Read on and discover the truth!

Myth: Every concert held at the Howard Performing Arts Center is a Howard Centersponsored and planned concert.False. We have many different individuals, groups and departments rent the concerthall throughout the year. Unless the concert is labeled as part of the “Howard CenterPresents…” series, it is being put on by someone else, which means we are generallynot in charge of advertising, equipment rental, planning or producing the event. Anyinvolvement we have with these concerts (such as selling tickets or providingvolunteers) is requested by the renting group. We have the highest possible standards when we book an artist to come to the HPAC,because we have likely paid this artist thousands of dollars to perform. We budget for necessary equipment rental and adequateadvertising to make sure the concert is a success. Unfortunately, not every renting group has the ability to pay for these things. Whilewe do what we can to help them have a successful concert or event, we are limited with what we have available to us in-house.

Myth: Artists booked at the Howard Performing Arts Center are based on the personal taste and musical preference of the HowardCenter staff.False. The concert hall was designed for the performance of classical, instrumental and acoustic music. Every decision made regardingseason planning is based on how to reach the most people, meaning all ages, all cultures and all musical preferences, and presented tocommittees and focus groups. As such, we want to hear about who you want to see here! Many of our best-selling concerts were bookedbecause we received repeated requests. If we can afford it, we will do everything we can to make it happen! We want to serve thecommunity and the student body.

Myth: The Howard Performing Arts Center will never have a very popular artist such as Josh Groban perform there.Probably True. While we would love to be able to book any artist we wanted, our season budget is very limited, and an artist like JoshGroban (or Mumford and Sons, or Justin Beiber, as has been requested by some!) would be well beyond anything we could afford. Reallybig names are often hundreds of thousands of dollars to book, and we have only a small fraction of that to plan our entire season. Whenwe book artists, it is a balancing act between who we can afford, and who students and the community will recognize and want to see.Unless we have a very generous sponsor, very big names such as these will most likely never make it to the Howard Performing ArtsCenter.

Myth: The Howard Performing Arts Center is underutilized.False! The Howard Performing Arts Center had over 200 events last year alone. In addition to our own series of 6–12 concerts eachseason, we host all the Department of Music concerts and recitals, the WAUS-sponsored “Second Sunday” Concert Series, spring and fallconcerts for Andrews Academy, Ruth Murdoch Elementary, and Village SDA Elementary, as well as many of the concerts for the BerrienSprings High School and Middle School. Enrollment Management often uses our building for preview events for prospective students, andwe welcome musical groups from sister schools around the country several times a year. We also host many conferences, vespers andthe occasional church service as well. The lobby is also frequently rented for banquets and wedding receptions. We are very busy!

Myth: The Howard Performing Arts Center does not allow worship services.True and False. Worship services that are part of a multi-day conference are allowed in the Howard Center. However, regular weeklyworship services are not scheduled for a number of reasons. First, dedicating the Howard Center to a weekly church service (in the waythat Newbold Auditorium hosts One Place and the Seminary Chapel hosts New Life) would conflict with the many conferences that takeplace here throughout the year that require a space for the Sabbath morning church component of their program. Second, when theHPAC was built, it was originally intended for the performance of music, and it was not expected to be a very high-use building. Thematerials chosen for its construction, especially in the concert hall where the space is meant to be nearly acoustically perfect, are notintended for heavy use. This makes the building much more expensive to repair and maintain than a classroom building would be,requiring us to be discerning in how many, and what types of events we allow. A weekly worship service would put undue strain on thebuilding and our resources.

Myth: The Howard Performing Arts Center doesn’t really advertise for concerts.False! For “Howard Center Presents…” concerts, in addition to the posters you see around campus and the fliers we place on thecafeteria tables, we advertise in the Student Movement and display our digital slides on all the flat-screens across campus. We also hangposters throughout Berrien Springs, Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, and we run advertisements in the Herald-Palladium, South BendTribune, and a weekly ad in the Journal Era. We notify local churches of events, make announcements in their bulletins, or ask them tohand out fliers and hang posters. We also run ads on radio stations such as WAUS (for classical concerts), WFRN and PulseFM (both forChristian concerts). Finally, all the information we have for events is listed on our website, and videos and sound clips of the artists webook are also available through our website. If a concert is not well attended, it is not for lack of advertising. Aside from our “HowardCenter Presents…” series, we promote other concerts by posting available information on our website and running digital posters on ourlobby monitor. Unfortunately, we do not have a large enough advertising budget to aggressively advertise for non-HPAC events.

Myth: Renting the Howard Performing Arts Center is expensive.It depends who you ask… While paying $1,000 to rent the lobby on a weekend may seem steep to some, the ambiance here is beyondthat of a church fellowship hall or rec center. This is a state-of-the-art facility that is quite expensive to operate and maintain, and ourrental fees reflect those costs. These fees were also established based on comparisons to what comparable facilities throughout the areacharge for their rentals. However, keep in mind that we do offer significant discounts to current employees and students wishing to rentthe lobby or the concert hall, and academic departments and groups receive even deeper discounts.

Myth: Fusion vespers no longer exists because the Howard Performing Arts Center didn’t want it taking place there anymore.

False. The Howard Center hosted Fusion, but it was a production of Campus Ministries. The Office of Campus Ministries made thedecision regarding the conclusion of Fusion, a vespers service, since they are the organization that planned, funded and coordinatedFusion. Myth: Tuition dollars are used to pay for fancy lighting, new equipment and expensive upkeep of the building.False. Students pay an activity fee as part of their tuition each year, of which the Howard Performing Arts Center receives a portion thathelps support our season. This money is only used to book artists and produce concerts. Because of this, Andrews University studentswill always receive a very low and special student rate for tickets, and will sometimes even attend for free.

Myth: Tickets can be charged to student accounts.False. We accept cash, check, credit card or debit card, but we cannot charge tickets to a student account. We do, however, ask for yourstudent I.D. number when you purchase tickets so that we can give you the discounted student rate. Each I.D. number can get up totwo tickets at the discounted rate.

Myth: The Howard Performing Arts Center is only open during concerts and events.False. The Box Office is open Monday–Thursday, 1:30–5:30 p.m., and Friday, 1:30–3:30 p.m. Additionally, the administrative offices areopen Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Both offices are located in the Howard Center lobby, and anyone iswelcome to stop by during business hours or during concerts and other events.

Myth: The Howard Performing Arts Center has full-time employees.True. But not as many as you might think. In addition to our part-time student box-office workers and sound technicians, the HPAC onlyhas two full-time employees, a manager and an assistant manager. These two positions are responsible for all tasks, activities andresponsibilities at the HPAC, including marketing and advertising, booking artists and planning concerts, scheduling and coordinatingstudent workers and volunteers, coordinating rentals of the concert hall and lobby, managing and maintaining the building, planning andpromoting each season, and much more! Stop by and meet us! We love meeting AU students.

Myth: Using the screen and projector at the Howard Performing Arts Center is no big deal.False. We do not have an automatic, retractable screen. Whenever we receive a request for a screen and projector, we must assembleour large screen and either stand it up on legs or hang it on cables from the catwalk above the stage. Both of these are difficult,time-consuming, multi-person jobs, but can be done and are done often. However, using the screen and projector is not as simple arequest as it might be in another venue on campus.

Myth: Meat cannot be served in the lobby during banquets, weddings, etc.True. While we do not require a specific caterer for an event, we do not allow meat to be served. Also not allowed are alcohol andsmoking, as is the case all across campus. You are, however, allowed to have non-alcoholic drinks, even if the liquid is not clear.

The Howard Lobby is used for a variety of events, from weddings and private

parties to job fairs and acadmic events.

Myth: The Howard Performing Arts Center is a non-profit organization.True. A non-profit is an organization that uses surplus revenues (if there are any) to achieve its goals, rather than distributing them asprofits or dividends. If we make any money it goes right back into our operations.

Myth: The Howard Performing Arts Center is not affiliated with Andrews University.False. The Howard Performing Arts Center is both owned by the University and on the University’s budget, and its staff are Universityemployees.

Myth: The Howard Performing Arts Center became so expensive to maintain that Andrews University could no longer afford its upkeepand had to sell it to an outside party.False. While it is true that the maintenance and upkeep of the HPAC is high like any other building on campus, the University has noplans to sell the building. It still belongs to Andrews University and we see no reason why that would ever change.

Myth: The primary donors to the Howard Performing Arts Center have strict demands and will pull their funding if these demands arenot met.False. John and Dede Howard, the major donors of the building, have a profound love of music, a shared commitment to the community,and are extraordinarily generous. What the Howards envisioned was a world-class facility for fine arts presentations—a state-of-the-artresource devoted to the performance, recording and broadcasting of music, and a cultural center to be shared and enjoyed by the entirecommunity.They continue to donate money to the building each year for its upkeep and improvement and are huge supporters of whatwe do here.

We know that there are probably a lot more assumptions and misconceptions about the Howard Performing Arts Center out there thatwe didn’t cover or don’t even know about, so we invite you to contact us with any and all questions or concerns you might have. Two Andrews University students in the Department of Engineering & ComputerScience won in their category of the 9th Annual Extreme Redesign 3D PrintingChallenge. Andrew Roderick, a junior, and Brian Booth, also a junior, took the topprize in the College Engineering category. Both received a scholarship from Stratasys,the contest sponsor and manufacturer of 3D printers and production systems forprototyping and manufacturing.

This international contest encouraged students to submit an innovative productdesign, a redesign of an existing product, or an original work of art or architecture.Says Andrew, “We were ecstatic and honored to win and be able to represent AndrewsUniversity on an international level. I really appreciate the friendship andencouragement of our professors while providing a great education.”

The project requires two backgrounds: the ability to use a computer-aided drafting CAD software and the ability to visualize in 3D. Thesubmissions to the engineering category were either innovative designs or redesigns of an existing product, and Stratasys judged themaccording to “creativity, usefulness, part integrity and aesthetics.” Winning designs in the past have included a Continuous Supply HandPump, an Off Road Cell Phone Carrier, and a Stair Climbing Robot.

Andrew Roderick and Brian Booth collaborated on the redesign.

Boon-Chai Ng, professor of engineering, teaches Manufacturing Processes which is a third year mechanical engineering class wherestudent learn how to put a product together from an idea to a finished product. During fall semester of 2012, Ng saw this competition as agreat opportunity to “encourage the students to use their God given talents to create something useful.”

Andrew and Brian submitted a redesign, which they called the Crawler Seat 2.0. Brian described the experience saying, “It was great toapply the knowledge that we have learned to design a product that is applicable to real world situations. The professors in the Departmentof Engineering & Computer Science are incredibly helpful and insightful and this project was a great example of their desire to see ussucceed.”

Due to the fact that the submission is currently under review for commercial product development and licensing, details of the design willbe released at a later date.

On Thursday evening, April 18, at Loma Linda, California, the incoming Dean of the AndrewsUniversity Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary offered an interpretation of the death ofJesus. A native of the Czech Republic, something that became important toward the end of hispresentation, his name is Jiri Moskala. The occasion was the first session of “The Cross: ASymposium on Atonement” which the Adventist Theological Society organized and the place wasthe Campus Hill Church.

Moskala unfolded his interpretation in three steps. In the first, he emphasized the significance ofthe topic, the need to approach it with a humble attitude and the importance of an inclusivetheory today. He stressed the danger of allowing contemporary sensibilities to distort currentinterpretations.

In his second step, Mosksala reviewed eight of the theories which Christians have developedover the centuries. These are the ransom, satisfaction, moral influence, Socinian, governmental,Christus Victor, penal substitutionary and nonviolent atonement alternatives. He identified

weaknesses of each; however, in keeping with his inclusive approach, he put more emphasisupon the positive contributions each one makes to our understanding of God’s character. Hereviewed the contributions of several contemporary Seventh-day Adventists in the same way.These were A. Graham Maxwell, Jack Provonsha, George Knight and Dan Smith. Heexpressed special appreciation for the work of Norman Gulley of Southern Adventist University

Although he highlighted positive features of all eight, Moskala’s greatest sympathies were withthe penal substitutionary interpretations of sixteenth century Protestant Reformers such as MartinLuther and John Calvin. He agreed with what they wrote about the seriousness of sin, the wrathof God and the contribution of Jesus in accepting the punishment that we deserve. But heexplicitly rejected the doctrines of predestination and limited atonement that say that the positiveconsequences of the death of Jesus apply only to those whom God has chosen in advance. Hedidn’t say anything one way or another about the idea of original sin or about the Anabaptist orRoman Catholic Reformations views of the time.

In his third step Moskala outlined his own “Cosmic, Substituionary, Great Controversy AtonementTheory” and expounded it by appealing to a number of Biblical texts. This theory is “cosmic” inthat it thinks of the battles with sin as more than the struggles within individuals, “substitutinary”because it says that Jesus accepted the punishment that humans deserve and part of the “GreatControversy” because of its focus on the universe-wide conflict about the character of God.. Hedescribed the atoning or reconciling accomplishments of the death of Jesus as “complete but notcompleted.” Only at the very end of the “Great Controversy” and the final elimination of sin willGod be fully vindicated.

Centuries ago the Czeck Jon Hus declared that “The Truth of God will Prevail!” Moskalareported. During the “Velvet Revolution” Vaclav Havel proclaimed that “Truth and Love willPrevail!” Moskala’s own proclamation: “Truth, Love and Justice will Prevail!”

All the metaphors of atonement are applicable in conjunction with each other in various contexts.

Further, the struggle is not between the models, but living as though the Atonement is real. It is

really hard to vouch for the validity of a principle when it has not changed the way one lives. The

theological constructs primarily give argumentative justification for theologians. 3

You are catching my attention. I need to start reading about Jiri's views.

But, if you said, "Chrsitianity is not dead within Adventism" based on his theological positions, I

am afraid his days as a theological leader may be already counted. Any Adventist theologian that

becomes "too much of a Christian" is in danger of being ostracized. Then he will have to move to

SoCAl where open mindedness is not only welcome, it's required!

Though I am sure that as a good Czech fellow, he will certainly honor the famous motto*,

"Pravda Vítězí" (Truth Prevails) - as inscribed on the banner of the President of the Czech

Republic. Jan Hus did!

Adventist Review : Walking the Newsbeat

BY DEBBIE MICHELI sat in my office overlooking the Rockefeller Plaza ice rink and wasovercome with a mixture of anxiety and relief. Anxiety, because I had made the decision toleave my job at NBC News without any other prospects in sight; relief, in that the daily grindchronicling the latest devastation had reached its end.

It was the culmination of 11 years chasing leads showcasing the worst of humanity: theHeaven’s Gate mass suicide; Washington, D.C., sniper shootings; JonBenét Ramsey murder;September 11; and stories labeled “nature’s wrath,” such as Hurricane Katrina.

I was at the pinnacle of my career, doing what I’d worked hard to achieve. Just a year beforeI had received companywide recognition along with a monetary reward for my efforts. Now Ilooked back on my life and work, and the events that had brought me to the point ofleaving my job.

News Junkie For years I was a news junkie and fed my addiction every waking moment.When I wasn’t on the road pursuing stories, my schedule looked like this: The minute Iopened my eyes each morning I turned on the radio and listened to NPR. I got out of bedand walked to the door to get the New York While eating breakfast I read the paper.As I got ready for work I listened to the radio. I got on the train and was lost in Timemagazine. At my desk the Associated Press newswires provided almost constant newsupdates. Back at home I was glued to the TV watching more news.

As I look back I can see that I fell into this cycle while still a young girl growing up on theisland of Jamaica during the late 1970s and early 1980s. I remember listening to my aunt,

the host of a local radio program, discussing the upheavals of the day. I was mesmerized asshe deftly handled caller after caller, dispensing suggested solutions to such naggingproblems as high unemployment, chronic poverty, and political unrest. At home my parents,armed with a copy of the Jamaican newspaper , debated the country’s economicplight. I came to realize the value of news, of being informed, and how current events had adirect bearing on my life. “Knowledge is power,” my parents would often say.

By the time I migrated to Brooklyn, New York, to attend college, the proverbial news bughad bitten me. I majored in journalism at Brooklyn College and pursued further studies atthe Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Then a month before graduatingfrom Columbia, NBC News hired me for their prestigious News Associates program. I waselated! I thought. Here I would work alongside the verypeople I watched and idolized: Tom Brokaw, Katie Couric, Jane Pauley, Stone Phillips, AnnCurry.

As I walked down the hallowed halls of NBC News—smiling photos of my idols lining thewalls—I was ready to “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comforted,” as journalists like tosay. In college I had learned that in 1973 Washington Post reporters Carl Bernstein and BobWoodward exposed corruption in the Nixon administration, and I too wanted to “do good”and “right the wrongs” of the world. I believed that journalists play a critical role insociety—a belief I still cling to today. We need to know what’s going on around us; it helpsus to be better citizens, better consumers. Journalism taught me that the most importantthing people want to know is whether their world is safe, and journalists help provide thatanswer, along with checks and balances. It’s a noble profession, and I felt proud to be partof it.

After September 11Shortly after September 11, however, I began wondering whether this was all there was tolife.

During this time at NBC News I would often do freelance writing for various publications,including the New York and magazine. I collaborated with aphotographer for my stories and was intrigued by his demeanor. He was humble. He neverboasted about his skills. He never cursed. He was very different from others I had met, and Isoon came to realize why. He was a Seventh-day Adventist Christian, a denomination ofwhich until then I was ignorant.

When he invited me to his church that worshipped on Saturdays, I was immediatelysuspicious. Raised as an Anglican, I thought everyone went to church on Sundays.

, I surmised. Yet, when I declined his invitation, hedidn’t try to force me to change my mind. He was respectful and kind. He also did what Ithen considered to be even stranger—he would often pray with me.

As time went on, after I had worked about eight years as a full-time journalist, I began tofeel a deep void in my life. I was filled with questions regarding my true purpose in theworld, and for the first time I began wondering about God’s intent for me. Yes, I was doingwhat I had always wanted to do, but I didn’t feel that I was influencing people’s lives asmuch as I had hoped.

Malvo’s StoryThese feelings of dissatisfaction occurred about the same time that I was assigned theWashington, D.C., sniper story. I traveled to Jamaica and spent months researching thebackground of the young man Lee Boyd Malvo, who was later convicted along with JohnMuhammad for killing 10 people in the D.C./Maryland/Virginia area in 2002. This storywould affect me more than any other and change my outlook forever.

In conversations with me, Lee’s mother, Una James, recounted her early dreams andaspirations for her one-and-only child. She said that when her son was very young shesuspected his father of infidelity, so she took the child and left the city to live in a rural areaclose to her family. She wanted to prevent the father’s involvement in their lives. Lee wouldlater tell a psychiatrist that he missed his father greatly. He also said that it seemed as if hismother took out her rage on him by physical abuse.

Una had grown up among Adventists. Many ofher relatives are members of the church, but sheherself suffered disappointment. She recounteda story to me about how the church hadallegedly wronged her mother, and so she felt she couldn’t trust “church people.”

Una decided to take matters into her own hands and raise her son the best she could. Shecared deeply for him and wanted nothing short of the best. Opportunities were limited in

Jamaica, especially for someone who hadn’t finished high school and had few skills. Sowhen Lee was 8, she started visiting other Caribbean islands in search of work. Whenevershe was gone, Lee would stay with relatives or sometimes with relative strangers. At onepoint, while living with one of his teachers, Lee began to bond with his teacher’s father. Heeven began calling him “Dad.”

Then, in Antigua, Una crossed paths with a father on the run, John Muhammad. Muhammadwas afraid he was going to lose custody of his three young children, so he had fled theUnited States with his children in tow and was hiding out in Antigua.

Una learned that for a price, Muhammad could obtain false documents that would allow herto live in the U.S. This had been her lifelong goal. Una told me that when she first met JohnMuhammad, she felt she was in the presence of evil. This didn’t deter her, however, frombuying false documents and a ticket to the United States from Muhammad, or from makingthe deadly mistake of leaving her son with him.

The plan was for Lee to eventually join his mom in Florida, but he began to bond withMuhammad. He would later tell his psychiatrist that he admired the way Muhammad dealtwith his own children and that he longed for that kind of father-figure relationship. SoonLee was calling him “Dad.”

By time time Muhammad brought Lee to the United States to be reunited with his mother,Lee had attended 14 elementary and high schools and had lived with numerous people. Henow chose to stay with Muhammad rather than live with his mother.

Lee, now 16, was under the firm control of someone his mom deemed evil. For the nextyear Lee was in intense physical training, tied up in the woods for hours wearing only shortsand learning to go without food and water. Lee also converted to Muhammad’s brand ofreligion, in which the federal government was considered the enemy of Black people. Leewould later say, “I was desperate to fill a void in my life, and I was ready to give my life for[Muhammad].”

Life-altering ExperienceLee’s story touched a nerve in me. I was angry that this young man, who had greatpotential, had been duped and would pay a heavy penalty for his crime. Why, I wondered,couldn’t he have been helped the terrible tragedy occurred?

I began asking God to show me how to help the people with whom I came in contact. Ididn’t want to cover another story like this one, where I show up in time to report what thedevil has been up to, and then leave the victims in the same condition I had found

them—hurting and without hope.

Besides praying, I found myself reading a Bible thatmy photographer friend had given me. I discoveredthe writings of King Solomon, which resonated withme: “I have seen all the things that are done underthe sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing afterthe wind” (Eccl. 1:14). I then read more of the Bibleand discovered a God who loved me to the point ofdeath. He knew the desires of my heart and gavethem to me, even when I didn’t ask.

As I looked back on my life I could see His immenselove. He had blessed me with loving parents andtwo younger sisters I truly adore. As I came to knowJesus, my Savior, my Friend, I fell in love with Himand wanted to repay Him for all He had done for me.

For the first time in my life I felt peace, hope, and joy. What a huge relief to know that Ididn’t have to be in control of my destiny! I could leave my troubles with Someone whowould carry those burdens for me. As I fell in love with Christ, I also discovered that He hadgiven us a gift, a day of rest, called the Sabbath.

The Sabbath following Thanksgiving 2003 I was baptized into the Seventh-day AdventistChurch, and was joined by the photographer as he rededicated his life to Christ. Five dayslater, with tears of joy streaming down my face, I married the photographer: Jean-IresMichel, my husband now for almost 10 years.

That was undoubtedly the happiest time of my life—married to Christ and also the personwho had become my best friend.

A Career ChangeAt work, however, I was tormented. I found myself going into my office, closing the door,and instead of listening to the news, clicking on the 3ABN or Amazing Facts Web sites andlistening to “good news.” I wanted to hear nothing but the everlasting gospel.

After earnest prayer it became clear that I needed to move on, but to what? I didn’t knowthe answer, but I felt Christ calling me to serve Him even more faithfully elsewhere.

I quit my job in March 2006, and for two years I waited, not knowing what the next chapter

in my life would be. I was unemployed, and we relied on my husband’s income to makeends meet. By then we also had a daughter.

I was anxious to know God’s plan for my life, but I knew I had to be patient and wait forwhat He had already prepared for me.

The answer came early in 2008 when He directed me to accept a job offer as an associateprofessor in the Communication Department at Andrews University (AU). Since then the Lordhas made it abundantly clear that He wants me to serve in a teaching ministry. I wasimpressed to continue to tell stories, but to focus on Christ-centered stories, ones thatcould reach people before they gave in to the devil’s seduction.

A publishing ministry was started on campus for which AU students produce a Christiancollegiate magazine we named Why Because we’re called to envision thepast—Christ’s dying for us. To envision our role as Christians in today’s world. To envisionthe future of Christ’s return. And it’s essential that our youth are involved in clarioning thismessage.

I’d like to think that if Lee Malvo had read such a magazine or had been involved in a similaryouth ministry, his life would have turned out different. As he languishes in a Virginiaprison today, serving a life sentence with no possibility of parole, I’m reminded of the Bibleverse that says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Prov. 29:18, KJV). Lee“perished” without that vision.

Like Lee, I had a void in my life; but I am truly grateful to have discovered Jesus Christ, theonly One who could fill it.

May is the month for the final competition of theyear, when prints and digital submissions that were judged acceptable or honored in competition during thecurrent season will be reviewed again by three judges, who will select the top five projected images andprints, in the categories of Nature and Open (everything else).

The club’s season runs from September to June, with four competitions each year. Besides two special topicsfor each competition, three other categories are always acceptable: Nature, Portraits, and Open. The specialtopics for this season were as follows: for October: Dawn/Sunset, Now and Then (side-by-side contrasts, oran image showing both the old and the new); December: Farm Produce, Night Shots; February: LongExposure, Sequence; and April: Ice, Movement.
