Celebrating U.S. ManufacturingTwo-thirds of what Walmart sells is made, grown, or sourced in the U.S. Our commitment to buying $250 billion more in U.S.-manufactured goods by 2023 could help create an estimated 1 million U.S. jobs.*

*Walmart’s $250 billion commitment between 2013 and 2023 is estimated to create over 1 million jobs based on estimates by Boston Consulting Group.

These are stats that associates, as well as customers, can be proud of. “I think people look at a product from an American factory, and it gives them a sense of ownership, knowing it’s a quality item made right here at home,” says Robert Rhoden, store manager at Store 5889 in Dallas, Texas. Through July 5, our stores will be dressed up in red, white, and blue for the Investing in American Jobs campaign, with special signage and displays calling attention to items that support American jobs. This promotion helps boost the visibility of Walmart’s 10-year plan (begun in 2013) to purchase an additional $250 billion in products from American factories. One way we support that effort is through Walmart’s annual Open Call event (June 13 this year), where U.S.

manufacturers and entrepreneurs pitch their products in hopes of getting in stores and on Walmart.com. By championing U.S. manufacturing, Walmart is working to shorten its supply chain, reduce costs and lead times, and offer customers great-quality products. From Bubble Wrap to bird food and truck tires to pool supplies, our goods from American factories are as diverse as the people and places that produce them. Uncle Sam would be proud. So would Mr. Sam.

Use Your Melon!“Guaranteed freshness led to customer loyalty,” says Bryana Overton, department manager, frozen and dairy, Store 1608, Red Bluff, Calif. She had a VPI smash with seedless watermelons.

Walmartworld.com 9

My VPI ResultsWhy I Chose WatermelonsI was department manager for produce and figured summer was the right time to increase watermelon sales. It felt like the right product to gain more customer loyalty versus the local competition.

How I Increased SalesI made sure the watermelons were in the customers’ sights, no matter where they shopped. I set features near self-checkout and near the garden center exit. It’s important to be very visual with the product. Each feature had free samples as well.

My VPI AdviceDefinitely get creative about your product’s locations in the store. That’s really what can make or break a VPI—being in the right spot.

WELCOME!

Located near two colleges and a number of other schools, Store 1835, Vestal, N.Y., spends all year getting ready to ace their biggest test:

Back to School! Here, Store Manager Laura Kenyon shares three ways she and her associates help their customers to go back big!

GET OFF CAMPUS. “We take over the garden

center before school starts,” Laura says, “and even use tents on the sidewalk for

items like futons and fridges.” Signs are placed outside

to drive excitement about must-have items.

SIGN UP FOR EXTRA CREDIT.In addition to placing materials

and signage supplied by the Home Office to promote Back

to School, associates use signage from vendors like Coke and Pepsi to welcome students

to the store.

STOCK UP ON SUPPLIES.Laura ensures stock levels

throughout the day, paying attention to basics like pencils

and notebooks. Associates organize shelf space so

these items are easy to find, and they place quick-selling products in side counter and

Action Alley locations.

Pete Grady works with cutting-edge mobile technology, but his commitment to customer service helps him dial up success. For example, over the last 12 years, Pete has sold eight phones to the same customer. “He keeps coming back because he knows I’ll find a phone to suit his needs.” Here’s how Pete keeps his department thriving with strong sales.

Know your products. Pete keeps track of available phones and plans so he can discuss options with his customers. “I read the WIRE every week so I can stay up to date,” he says.

Work smart. “Do things right, even if it takes longer,” Pete says. His focus on getting the job done and stocking his merchandise helps keep his department running smoothly.

Take time to understand your customers. Many of Pete’s customers are elderly and not always comfortable trying new technology. So Pete tries to help them find phones and plans that work for them. “If they leave the store happy, they’re going to come back the next time,” he says. “If they come back the next time, you’ve done your job.”

“Give customers what they need so they’ll come back.”

Meet Your New Assistant Smartphones just got smarter, thanks to a new Walmart App feature, Store Assistant.

It works like this: When a customer enters a store, their Walmart App shifts into Store Assistant mode and brings up tools that are useful for shopping. Your customers will be able to:

Manage shopping lists.Customers can easily create and save shopping lists, keep track of their budgets, and check off items as they shop.

Find items and services. A store map (coming soon to all U.S. stores) can help customers find aisle locations of specific items and services.

Scan to price check. Customers can quickly scan to check prices or add receipts to Savings Catcher, which compares prices with those of competitors.

Access services more quickly.App services and tools like Walmart Pay and Mobile Express Pharmacy are always a tap away.

mode makes shopping easier for

your customers. Digitally engaged

“Mr. Sam was right to say associates are our best idea generators,” says Josh Osmon, director of Frontend Innovations at the Home Office. The analysts, developers, and inventors on his team are responsible for creating new technology that makes shopping faster and easier for our customers. Where do they get their innovative ideas? From associates like you. “Associates know what’s important to the customer because they live it every single day,” says Josh, whose team travels from their lab in Bentonville to stores nationwide to collaborate

with store associates. Not only does the team count on associates to identify opportunities for improvement, but they also count on associates to test-drive the latest tech. “At every interval, we put the technology in front of store associates. Their insights on what works and what doesn’t help make our technology even better,” says Josh. Turn the page for three new customer solutions that came out of this cutting-edge partnership.

PICKLIST ASSIST

The Opportunity | Unless a customer has memorized produce UPCs, scanning produce items at self-checkout can be complicated, so some customers avoid using self-checkout altogether.

The Innovation | Picklist Assist —a new object-recognition software used at self-checkout—works to identify produce quickly and easily. It examines an item’s size, shape, and color to find matching items in the system so customers don’t have to look up codes.

Number of Stores Testing This Tech | 20

“This technology saves me time at checkout. My mother is in a wheelchair, and it’s easy for her to use. My children love using it because it’s fun.”Jessica Babcock, customer, Store 144, Fayetteville, Ark.

CHECK OUT WITH ME

The Opportunity | Customers buying large, bulky items have to haul them to the register.

The Innovation | By adding a card reader and point of sale to the TC70, Check Out With Me allows remote payment in any department that has its own register. For example, garden center customers won’t have to drag heavy bags of mulch to a register to check out. Number of Stores Testing This Tech | 350

“We took a multistep process down to a single, easy transaction.”Doug Humphrys, senior innovations manager, Home Office

CLOUD POWERED RETURNS

The Opportunity | Keeping track of everything needed to process a return —a receipt, original payment method, proper packaging—adds time and stress to each interaction.

The Innovation | With Cloud Powered Returns, associates can look up orders by phone number or email (for Walmart.com returns only) and process returns with the touch of a button—original packaging and receipts are not required. The customer is then reimbursed via the original method of payment. No swiping needed.

Number of Stores Testing This Tech | 50 (in all U.S. stores by June)

“Returns can be a stressful situation for customers and associates. The new system does 95 percent of the work for the customer service associate.”Misael Mengistu, customer service associate, Store 5936, Vienna, Va.

ASSOCIATE INNOVATOR

When the innovations team visited Store 5936 to test Cloud Powered Returns, Misael Mengistu—who studied software development in Sweden—quickly offered to help. “Misael has been driving most of our utilization,” says Senior Innovations Manager Doug Humphrys. “He’d test the system by using it every day, letting us know what worked and what changes needed to be made. We couldn’t have had this success without associates like Misael guiding us from the floor.” “It makes my work so enjoyable to be able to use my skills to help develop the returns system,” Misael says. “What I do here impacts the entire company.”

Party PeopleWhether it’s an eye-catching soda display, a Camaro inside the store promoting Hot Wheels, or Bakery Associate Delores Hall announcing fresh bread while riding a bike through the aisles, there’s always something fun happening at Store 1565 in Williston, N.D. “We love to merchandise and have fun,” says Store Manager Josh Comer, “and our customers love it when we do events.” Co-manager Kim Halvorson continues: “It comes back to expressing the feelings of the community through our merchandise.” When Walmart set a goal of holding 1 million events companywide, Kim knew her team of retailtainment experts would be able to deliver. “Stores should get behind retailtainment, because it’s what our customers want!”

Here are some tips from Store 1565 to help make retailtainment events a success.

Plan your party. Management holds quarterly in-store meetings with all 450 associates at once to discuss plans for events.

Don’t forget décor and entertainment. For events, associates set appealing WOW displays and entertain customers. At an event with the local humane society, for example, they had a Purina dog costume and made pet food displays.

Greet your guests. The first—and most important—step is smiling and saying hello. From there, you can engage your customers, get to know them, and find out what they like. Then, use what you learn to plan more great events!

Facing the Future Juan Beltran, Academy

training facilitator, Store 1627, Dilworth, Minn., teaches with technology.

Q: What’s the most exciting technology at the Academy?

A: Virtual reality! In Front End Simplification training, Oculus Rift headsets put department managers “in” a self-checkout bullpen. The headsets also help prep for events like Black Friday.

Q: What’s your favorite app? A: The Section Work Tool in the Inventory

Management app. It breaks each department into 4-by-4-foot sections so you can dig in to make sure it’s right.

Q: What’s important to know about Walmart technology?

A: If there’s something that you think could be better, say so. I’ve seen Walmart’s technology change for the better, and I think it’s because they listened to our feedback.

Adopt omni. “The future of retail is going to be omnichannel instead of purely offline or online,” says Victor, who toured Walmart’s tech lab, where cutting-edge products are developed.

Tap into technology. At DCs that handle perishables, like fresh produce, a computer program can tell an order filler how much time is needed to finish a picking trip based on dynamic engineering standards, says Victor. Associates use an app on their TC70s called Eden Inspect that helps improve inspection efficiency and ensure

freshness standards for fruits and vegetables. Develop solutions.Academy training inspired Victor to develop a digital tool for DC associates’ performance management. It gives managers real-time access to key information including KPI analysis, recognition, and accountability. “Teams can be managed more efficiently and engaged effectively,” says Victor.

Never stop learning. His top tip for every associate? “Grasp any opportunity to learn from others.”

For six months last year, Victor Li studied abroad—nearly 8,000 miles from home. He was one of 15 non-U.S. associates to complete the International Supply Chain program at the International Academy in Bentonville. The training centered on logistics, transportation, leadership, and culture, and he visited distribution centers (DCs) in Kansas and Utah and fulfillment centers in Pennsylvania. Here are a few lessons he took home.

When Sam Walton (born 100 years ago) opened the first Walmart store in 1962, he had a mission: Give customers lower prices so they can live better. Sam always stayed true to this, but he also under-stood the need for change. “We’ve got to be smart enough to think of things we can do better and better for our customers in order to keep ahead of our competitors,” he once said. It was this willingness to innovate that allowed Sam’s business to grow from a dime store in Bentonville into the company we work for today: the largest retailer in the world. Here, we revisit some of Walmart’s advancements in tech and see how we are keeping Sam’s legacy of innovation alive today.

What’s one thing every associate should know about My Walmart Schedule? You’re scheduled based on your True Availability—the days and times that you provide indicating when you’re truly available to work based on your needs and lifestyle. It balances work, family, and personal life and provides great service when customers needus to be available.

How can I get extra shifts? You’ll be scheduled into the open shifts that match your availability. You can also add shifts—up to 40 hours a week within job codes you’ve been assigned—even if you don’t have that day or time listed in your availability. Just click “Yes” to the open shift you choose. If you have secondary work areas of interest, you can pick up those shifts, too.

What’s the deadline for having my schedule completed?Friday at 8 p.m. for the schedule being published three weeks out.

I’ve been assigned a shift that doesn’t work with my personal schedule. What can I do?You can swap shifts without manager approval using My Walmart Schedule. If it’s a recurring conflict or a long-term change, you must update your availability to avoid shifts you don’t want. You’ll be assigned only shifts for which you’re available. See your supervisor to discuss any questions.

Lori McIntosh, personnel coordinator at Store 1770 in Cranberry Township, Pa., answers a few questions about how to make your schedule work for you and your customers.
