4 KATHERINE TIMES, WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 23 2013 www.katherinetimes.com.au Drunk drivers just don’t get the road safety message POLICE officers in Katherine are frustrated about motorists not getting the message to not drink and drive. Northern Watch Commander Peter Lindfield said between 4pm on Friday afternoon and midnight Saturday, six people were arrested by Katherine po- lice for drink driving offences. One person was arrested for low range and driving while disqualified, two drivers for medium range offences and three people for high range drink driving. Readings ranged from 0.068 per cent up to 0.239 per cent. Two people have been remanded in custody while the remainder have been bailed to appear in court in Katherine at a later date. “Due to the blatant disregard by these persons to the safety and lives of other road users over 300 drivers were breath tested on Saturday evening in Katherine,” Mr Lindfield said. “Katherine police will not tolerate having these people on our roads and will continue to target those who choose to drink and drive,” the Watch Commander said. “Thanks to all the responsible road users we encountered who were doing the right thing.” THE Northern Territory Envi- ronment Protection Authority says the environmental damage to the Edith River region after two uncon- trolled discharges of toxic mine waste water from the troubled Mt Todd Mine were “low”. An investigation report on un- controlled discharges from the Mt Todd Mine site during the 2012-13 wet season has documented the causes of the uncontrolled dis- charges from retention ponds 2 and 5 in February 2013 and assesses the potential impact on the environment from the discharges. “While the discharges had the potential to cause environmental harm, the NT EPA has assessed the overall risk of environmental harm from the 22 and 23 February dis- charges as ‘low’,” Acting Chair of the NT EPA, Gary Nairn, said. “However, the report also con- cluded that site water management practices and water management in- frastructure at the time were insuffi- cient to prevent uncontrolled discharges from the retention ponds, and unlikely to prevent such dis- charges in the future,” Mr Nairn said. In considering the findings of the investigation, the NT Environment Protection Authority determined the most practical and effective way to reduce the risk of future uncon- trolled discharges from retention ponds 2 and 5 is to ensure that addi- tional measures are implemented by mine owners Vista Gold, to better manage these retention ponds. Mr Nairn said Vista Gold, in re- sponse to the investigation and in consultation with the NT Environ- ment Protection Authority, has com- mitted to additional measures for the upcoming wet season, including new water management infrastruc- ture and a review of operating pro- cedures. “The aim is to reduce the risk of uncontrolled discharges from these retention ponds in the coming Wet season, and to maintain a high level of environmental management across the operation.” Mr Nairn said. The investigation report and the formal NT Environment Protection Authority decision are available on- line on the Northern Territory EPA website at: www.ntepa.nt.gov.au. McHappy Day in Katherine to help seriously ill kids AS THE countdown begins to McHappy Day, Katherine residents are being encouraged to pur- chase a Helping Hand and display it at their local McDonald’s restaurant to help raise much needed funds for Ronald McDon- ald House Charities. Over 580,000 Helping Hands were sold in 2012 and this year the McHappy Day team is hoping to beat this record to help raise a total of $3.4 million on the day, so the charity for children in need can continue to ex- tend their programs and services. To date, over 80,000 people have visited a Ronald McDonald Family Room, which provides a relaxing haven within hospitals giving families a break from the stress of many hours spent by their child’s bedside. This year’s fundraising target could equate to covering the cost to keep a Family Room open for more than 60,000 days. Helping Hands will be sold at Maccas in Kather- ine for $1 from today, Wednesday, October 23, up until McHappy Day on Saturday November 9. “Helping Hands are a fantastic way for the com- munity to show their sup- port for McHappy Day and make a real difference to the lives of seriously ill children and their fami- lies,” McDonald’s Kather- ine licensee Vicki-Leigh Lettice said. “They represent the community coming to- gether - communities who are always so generous in showing their support,” Ms Lettice said.
