WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT CANCER,
DIABETES TYPE II AND ALZHEIMERS IN ONE
SENTENCE?
BECAUSE:
© 4
OVER VIEW - CANCER, ALZHEIMER'S, DIABETES
• CANCER IS A CHRONIC ENDOCRINE METABOLIC DISEASE
IT IS A DISEASE OF ABERRANT CELL SIGNALLING AND
PROLIFERATION
• DIABETES IS A CHRONIC ENDOCRINE METABOLIC DISEASE
IT IS A DISEASE OF ABERRANT CELL SIGNALLING AND CELL
DEATH
• ALZHEIMERS IS A CHRONIC ENDORCINE METABOLIC
DISEASE IS A DISEASE OF ABERRANT CELL SIGNALLING AND
PROLIFERATION

THEY ARE ALL CHRONIC DISEASES
Chronic diseases are those medical issues people ‘live with’ in the defined
medical model and do not cause immediate death
The current medical model is not designed for chronic diseases
Nearly all chronic disease are diseases of excess/lifestyle only around 5%
are genetic
Life expectancy has grown in 20 yrs. from 72 to 84 in 20 years this means
that the consequences of excess will become more and more apparent
© 6
ALL ARE METABOLIC ENDOCRINE DISEASES
WHAT IS THIS?
It means that this triad of disease arise from an impaired functioning of all the physical and chemical changes that take place in the body to enable bodily growth & function which is determined in large part by the endocrine glands
This means all have a slow onset which is reversible at many stages
• Glucose disturbance appears years before a diabetes diagnosis. European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) 47th Annual Meeting: Abstract 335.September 13, 2011.
THIS MEANS YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!
This means all involve the brain

MICROBIOME
The Microbiome is the most exciting development in the last 50 yrs. in medicine
What you eat is totally under your control and preventable medicine
There will never be a drug for bacteria & viruses in the gut as they mutate
Most plants have anti bacterial and anti viral properties!

ALL INVOLVE DYSREGULATION OF THE THYROID
– HPA/AXIS The Thyroid plays the music written by the Hypothalamus in the brain
The signalling hormone TSH from the brain gets converted to T4 and T3 in
the gland. These hormones act on cells in all bodily tissues and can
alter gene products
Subclinical hypothyroidism is endemic in Ontario (Cancer in Ontario Overview
: A statistical report 2011)
The hormones regulate protein, carbohydrate and fat metabolism – in other
words all functions and diseases within the body normally described as
endocrine metabolism.
Another way is to say it regulates all fuel ( glucose ), Cells ( fats ) and DNA
(protein)

COMMON PATHOLOGIES
Cancer, Alzheimer’s and Diabetes all start via a common pathway of nutritional deficiencies or excess leading to a process called inflammation.
More women than men; 40-60yrs; western world; obesity

MORTALITY
Top causes of death Cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer's is projected by 2050
to be the third
In older people > 65 yrs. 2 of these diseases may be present at one time
The relative risks imparted by diabetes are greatest (about twofold or
higher) for cancers of the liver, pancreas, and endometrium, and lesser
(about 1.2–1.5 fold) for cancers of the colon and rectum, breast, and
bladder. Other cancers (e.g., lung) do not appear to be associated with
an increased risk in diabetes, and the evidence for others (e.g., kidney,
non-Hodgkin ) is inconclusive Diabetes Care 2010 July (33) 7 1674-1685

ALL INVOLVE NEUROLOGICAL PATHWAYS
The invasion of the neurological pathways start in the gut – the results are
expressed differently in each disease
Brain Fog
β-amyloid is transmitted via neuronal connections along axonal
membranes. Song HL, Shim S, Kim DH, Won SH, Joo S, Kim S, Jeon
NL, Yoon SY. Ann Neurol. 2013 Oct 2. doi: 10.1002/ana.24029.
Amyloid is also found deposited in the islet cells of the Pancreas
It is also found in cancer – eg brain and lymphomas, prostate cancers etc.

SURGERY & DRUGS
ALL 3 CONDITIONS ARE OVER TREATED with poor outcomes
Diabetes and Alzheimer’s are untreatable by surgery except when side effects become extreme - gangrene
Cancer is upregulated by surgery – Peeters et al 2008

DRUGS
• Alzheimers – Aricept claims to reduce progression only.
CMAJ. 2013 Sep 23. Efficacy and safety of cognitive enhancers for patients with mild cognitive impairment: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Tricco AC et al
• Diabetes – Metformin commonly but failure to address B12 deficiency
other commonly used drugs actually have been shown to make the collapse of the pancreas worse
Increased risk of cognitive impairment in patients with diabetes is associated with metformin. Moore EM, et al.Diabetes Care. 2013 Oct;36(10):2981-7.
• Cancer – those commonly used all have life threatening consequences
Avastin – recent publicity – failed to discuss the pharmacological issues and consequences.

STATINS – DON’T! Statins can cross the blood brain barrier and are responsible for fog brain
commonly described by patients. Potential underlying mechanisms for
statin side effects. Brain and Behaviour 15 My 2013
March 2012 the FDA announced that it was revising the labels of all statins
to warn that they can raise blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c levels.
updating the label of lovastatin to warn that a number of interacting
drugs can increase statin exposure up to 20-fold and trigger
rhabdomyolysis. revised label for lovastatin will include new
contraindications and dose limitations.
The Justification for the Use of Statins in Primary Prevention: An
Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin (JUPITER) trial showed a 27%
increase in diabetes mellitus in patients taking rosuvastatin compared
to placebo.

ALL 3 ARE REVERSIBLE AND PREVENTABLE
All progress as a long process of inflammation in the body
All take years of physiological change before they can be
diagnosed under the current conventional model
All involve high homocysteine levels ignored by current
models despite easy prevention

CAUSES FOR ALL 3 – DIET DIET DIET
Copper
Bacteria
Lack of B vitamins
Lack of fresh vegetables and fruit
Excess of sugar and processed foods

MED DIET
Association of Mediterranean Diet with Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. PROSPERO 2013
Singh B, Parsaik et alDepartment of Neurology, Department of Health Sciences Research, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA Department of Clinical Neuroscience, University of North Dakota School of Medicine
Background/Objective: To conduct a systematic review of all studies to determine whether there is an association between the Mediterranean diet (MeDi) and cognitive impairment. screened, five studies met eligibility criteria. Higher adherence to the MeDi was associated with reduced risk of
MCI and AD. The subjects in the highest MeDi tertile had 33% less risk (adjusted HR = 0.67; 95% CI, 0.55-0.81; p < 0.0001) of cognitive impairment (MCI or AD) as compared to the lowest MeDi score tertileprogressing from MCI to AD.

SUGAR IS WHITE SWEET AND DEADLY!*
The presence of sugar in processed foods has grown exponentially since 1900 – so has the diagnosis of Cancer – Diabetes - Alzheimers
Globally, sugar consumption has tripled in the past 50 years. But, it turns out, the greatest threat to human health is one type of sugar in particular: fructose.
In the US, per-capita consumption of fructose, a common food additive there – mainly in the form of high-fructose corn syrup – has increased more than 100-fold since 1970.
Processed foods lack key nutrients. 1tsp = fruits

DIET - SUGAR
Warburg in 1925 deduced quite correctly that:
“Cancer has only one prime cause. It is the replacement of normal oxygen
respiration of the body’s cells by anaerobic oxygen deficient cell
respiration”
Confirmed again in 2008 by another Nobel prize winner!
Ist calorie restriction to treat cancer randomised clinical trial approved by
Duke University Feb 2013
Use of Metformin endemic but this is not the answer! – Increases cognitive
impairment – Moore Diabetes Care 2013 Sept 5 – B12 issues not present

SUGAR
Grains translate to sugars in the body:
Sugar is inflammatory to the body ( inflammation being the key
pathological process in cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer's )
Sugar provides a better less hostile environment in the gut for bacteria and
viruses to grow and live ( bacteria and viruses part of the pathological
processes of cancer )
High circulating sugar levels impede the function of the brain, liver,
kidneys, pancreas and thyroid. The receptors leading to further
biochemical processes in the body are altered.

AVOID PROCESSED FOODS
LOVE YOUR VEGGIES
INNOVATE AND EAT A WIDE RANGE OF FOOD STUFFS
Value moderation
ELIMINATE SUGAR FROM YOUR DIET

STRESS
Minimize
Stress stimulates the fear flight mechanisms and
upregulates physiological functions – like driving a car at
90mph all the time, in turn that ‘exhausts’ the adrenal
glands and inhibits proper metabolism

EXERCISE
At least an hour a day is mandatory - our lifestyle has become
very sedentary but our bodies are not designed to be sedentary
Long-term treadmill exercise inhibits the progression of
Alzheimer's disease-like neuropathology in the hippocampus of
APP/PS1 transgenic mice. Liu HL, et al. Behav Brain Res. 2013
Aug 19;256C:261-272.
In cancer and diabetes exercise has shown consistently a long
term beneficial effect resulting in good prognosis

WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT? LOTS!!
There are many very effective herbal medicine protocols which
inhibit the development of cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's
These plants have huge amounts of science about them.
Curcuma Longa – Turmeric is probably the best known
98 metabolic pathways affected – efficacy shown against 19
cancers, diabetes and Alzheimer's
