American Chemical Societyʼs New York Section, Inc. 2014 Elections - Candidates Information (Offices of Chair-elect, Secretary, Directors at Large and Councilors) CANDIDATE FOR CHAIR-ELECT FOR 2015 ALISON G. HYSLOP I am very honored run for the 2015 Chair Elect position of the New York Section of the American Chemical Society. The New York Section has a long history of being an outstanding section that promotes the chemical sciences and fosters new scientists. The Nichols Medal Symposium, the Undergraduate Research Symposium, and the outreach to the communitry through National Chemistry Week at the New York Hall of Science are some of the exciting opportunities the New York Section offers to chemists, chemical educators, chemistry students, and non-chemists alike. The topical groups and subsections are the lifeblood of the section. In addition, the BioChemical, Nanotechnology, Analytical, and Inorganic topical groups, give members a chance to discuss chemistry within their discipline. The High School Teachers group, Chemagination, and the Student Members Committee allow students and educators times to meet and talk about chemistry. The MetroWomen Committee is a forum for women chemists to discuss issues of particular interest to them. Since the New York metro area is large, the subsections allow chemists to meet more locally. As the chair of the New York Section of the American Chemical Society, I will work to promote these groups and keep them strong and growing. I will focus on chemical education, on promoting opportunities for students to do research, and I will work to strengthen the teaching of science. Through Project Seed, high school students are given the opportunity to conduct research and share their findings at the ACS National Meetings. Chemagination is an exciting event in which high school students imagine what innovation or breakthrough in the field of chemistry will be important in the lives of teenagers 25 years from now. I would encourage college students to join the ACS, and to reap the benefits of membership. Industrial ties need to be strengthened. I would encourage chemists in industry to become more involved in the local ACS. I would also support the activities of the Chemical Marketing and Economics group which meets regularly to promote chemistry and industry. Communication with members and the community is the key to keeping the New York Section vital. We have an excellent website at http:// newyorkacs.org with information about groups, events, and programs. Information about the New York section can also be found at the monthly newsletter, The Indicator, online at http://theindicator.org/ online, and through email.

ALISON G. HYSLOP

I am very honored run for the 2015 Chair Elect position of the New York Section of the American Chemical Society. The High School Teachers group, Chemagination, and the Student Members Committee allow students and educators times to meet and talk about

chemistry. I will continue the work of the past chairs, encourage members to be involved, and sustain the Subsections and Topical Groups. I look forward to working with the entire NY Section membership, current board, subsections, and topical groups.

CANDIDATE FOR CHAIR-ELECT FOR 2015

RUBEN M. SAVIZKY

It is a great honor for me to be considered as Chair-Elect in 2016 for the New York chapter of the American Chemical Society. I view this as an opportunity to share my passion and love for chemistry with others, particularly undergraduate students. I began my professional career in 2005. Although I enjoyed teaching courses I noticed that many of the students were not active (or even knew about) the ACS. I found myself telling them about many of the advantages to being a member of this organization, even as students. Over the years I have tried to encourage students to attend events such as national meetings, undergraduate symposia and the Nichols symposium. I believe I am in a strong position to serve you because of my previous experience with the ACS. As an undergraduate I was

active in my student chapter of ACS; as a graduate student I often attended ACS National Meetings and symposia. Since I have moved back to New York City I have been President of the Younger Chemists Committee, Director-at-Large for the chapter, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Brooklyn subsection. In the past five years I have been actively involved in the New York chapter – for example I helped organize a Brooklyn Frontiers lecture in 2010, a successful research symposium in 2011, and webinar/interactive seminars on food chemistry and chemistry careers in the past two years. I would like to continue to participate in similar activities, as well as strengthen ties to our surrounding chemical communities. For example, I have been in contact with the North Jersey Section of ACS to hold a joint mixer at the end of March. Once again, I would like to thank the New York chapter of ACS for this opportunity, and I look forward to continuing my activities within this wonderful and vibrant section.
