in our DefenseThe Bonnies held Akron to only 37 points marking the second time in as many season that an opponent was held under 40. Last season, the Bonnies shut down Yale, allowing only 35 points to be scored. St. Bonaventure holds 5.0 turnover margin against opponents. The Bonnies have held their opponents to 30 percent shooting. Akron did not have any players score more than six points and gave up 26 points off turnovers. The Brown and White have forced their opponents into 43 turnovers in two games.

no trail MixThe Bonnies have not trailed in their 80 minutes of play this season. Binghamton tied 14-14 at the 9:38 mark in the first half of the opener, but St. Bonaventure ballooned that lead to 14 by halftime. Akron was within two three minutes into the Bonnies home opener, but again the Bonnies would not let the Zips come within seven points of their lead.

seeing DoubleSenior Dana Mitchell now has 92 double-figure scoring games through her career, sitting at third on the all-time list. With three more, she would move into second on the all-time list and could surpass the top spot with six more games of double-figures, beating out Hilary Waltman who has 98. The record has stood for almost 10 years.

a time for second ChancesThe team exploded in the second half against Akron busting to a 31-point advantage late in the second. Five second half-threes plus two jumpers and free points added to the 40-17 margin in the second stanza. Off the bench, sophomore Linsey niles scored five within her five minutes against the Zips. Classmate Jessica Jenkins was the difference maker in the second half against Binghamton putting up three 3-pointers, four buckets and two from the charity stripe to notch 13 points.

Moving down the lineEvery member of the Bonnies’ bench has seen action in the last two games. At Binghamton, the bench accounted for 13 points, while against Akron they scored 17. Sophomore Linsey niles made an instand impact in her six minutes against the Zips, dropping a three and one jumper. Freshman alaina Walker has been a defensive hog pulling down a total 13 rebounds in two games

tight scheduleThe Brown and White play five games in 10 days, one of which started yesterday on the road at Binghamton. Returning home today against the Zips, the Bonnies make a quick trip to Big 4 rival Canisius. St. Bonaventure plays its last game in the six-day run against Niagara. st. bonaventure, n.Y. - A solid defensive effort by the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team led to a convincing 67-37 victory against Akron in the team’s home opener at the Reilly Center on Sunday afternoon. St. Bonaventure shot 51 percent (25-49) from the field and 78 percent from the charity stripe, in a game that it never trailed. The Bonnie defense held Akron to 30 percent (11-36) shooting from the floor. Akron only had six offensive rebounds and four second-chance points. The Bonnies scored 26 points off 24 turnovers and the pressure defense did not allow an Akron player to score more than six points. Senior Dana Mitchell led the team with a game-high 16 points on 7-of-11 from the field in only 25 minutes of action. Sophomore Megan van tatenhove and armelia Horton each dumped in 11 points, while a total of five players scored eight or more points.

Home openersOn Sunday, the Bonnies beat Akron 67-37 to move St. Bonaventure to 7-3 under head coach Jim Crowley, in home openers. Senior Dana Mitchell has tallied 57 total points in her four home openers, while classmate andrea Doneth pitched in 32. Overall since 1982, the St. Bonaventure women’s hoops team is 20-8 in home openers at the Reilly Center.

Moving up in the booksSenior Dana Mitchell is only 99 points away from moving into the fourth spot and 133 to move into third on the all-time scoring list in the program record books. Even with two consecutive seasons of scoring 500+ points, the Fairless Hills, Pa., still trails the top spot held by Hilary Waltman by 643 points.

super seniorsWhen seniors andrea Doneth and Dana Mitchell joined the team in 2006-07, the Bonnies had not had a winning season in eight years. in their rookie season, St. Bonaventure went 16-15 to break the trends of years past. Now, three seasons later, the Bonnies have 57 triumphs, totaling more than the program’s combined total from the last six years (2000-06).

Preseason accoladesSenior Dana Mitchell was tabbed as a Preseason Atlantic 10 All-Conference first team member. Mitchell returns for her final season in the Brown and White following a junior campaign in which she garnered All-Conference second team accolades for the second consecutive year. She averaged 15.5 points to rank second in the conference and pulling down 5.6 rebounds per contest. The Fairless Hills, Pa., native also shot 50.3 percent from the field and 82 percent from the free throw line to rank seventh and fourth, respectively, in the conference.

Can’t Wait to get on the road again...The Bonnies only travel to six non-conference games this season, but will travel more than 4,000 miles and spend almost six combined days traveling. St. Bonaventure hopes to continue its out-of-confer-ence road success in the 2009-10 season following a 6-3 non-confer-ence road record last season.

Bonnies’ Weekly Schedule

Winning WaysFor the second time since 1981 and the first time ever at the division i level, the Bonnies posted three consecutive winning seasons. Prior to the Bonnies arrival in division i, Bona tallied four straight winning seasons between 1977 and 1981 as well as back-to-back positive campaigns in 1984-85 and 1985 all under former boss Mary Jane Telford.

Familiar FacesThe Bonnies face 24 of the same opponents as last year including 10 non-conference foes. St. Bonaven-ture went 18-8 against these oppon-ense, going 8-2 in non-conference play, falling to only Bowling Green and later-ranked Marist. The Brown and White added a victory against Temple for the first time in seven years and beat eventual A-10 tournament Champion Charlotte to close out the regular season schedule. St. Bonaventure also upsetranked Michigan State at the Reilly Center to earn its first votes in the Associate Press (AP) Top 25 Poll .

Atlantic 10 EfficiencyLast year’s squad opened A-10 play with two wins for the first time since the 2001-02 season. After a four-game Atlantic 10 winning streak in February, the Brown and White also established the school mark for most A-10 wins with nine victories. The fourth place finish is the team’s best position in the final standings since the 2003-04 season when the A-10 was divided into regions.

G-ForceDana Mitchell scored her 1,000th career point in a 71-67 win at Akron on November 22. Mitchell became the 16th member of the 1,000 point club, needing only 63 games to reach the milestone. Katelyn Murray also earned a nod into the club after scor-ing her 1,000th point on February 10 at home against Rhode island. Mitchell and Murray became the 16th and 17th players in program history to enter the exclusive club in the school’s 38 seasons of collegiate basketball.

all-Conference accoladesFor the second consecutive season, Dana Mitchell and Katelyn Mur-ray were each cited by the Atlantic 10 Conference with postseason honors conducted by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Head coach Jim Crowley also made history by being named the 2008-09 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, becoming the first coach in program history to earn the honor. Murray earned a spot on the Aca-demic All-Conference team. Murray’s selection was the second of her career as well as the 15th overall Academic All-Conference selection for the Bonnies. Mitchell is the fifth player to notch multiple All-Conference honors and the seventh player in program history to make the second squad. She is the first Bonnie to be named to the second team twice since Stefanie Collins’ selection in 2004-05.

rewriting HistorySt. Bonaventure made history in several different ways on its way to a record-setting season. First, the Brown and White beat nation-ally ranked Michigan State 63-52, on Bob Lanier Court. The Bonnies received their first postseason opportunity with a bid to the WNIT. St. Bonaventure then went on to defeat West Virginia in the first round and Wisconsin in the second. The 1997-98 squad is the only other team in program history to beat two BCS schools in the same season, when they beat Syracuse and Northwestern. Also, the win against WVu was the first postseason victory by any of the Big 4 women’s basketball teams in the division i era.

Court smartsSenior Katelyn Murray was named to the ESPN the Magazine Aca-demic All-America second team, as selected by the College Sports infor-mation directors of America. Murray’s ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America nomination is her second in as many years, as she made third team in the 2007-08 season. Murray graduated with a 4.0 grade point average in biology.

As a team, for the sixth time in the last seven academic years, St. Bo-naventure earned a spot on the Women’s Basketball Coaches Associa-tion (WBCA) Academic Team Honor Roll as the Bonnies ranked 16th in the country among NCAA division i institutions with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.35.

it’s raining threesLast season, St. Bonaventure shot 42 percent from beyond the three-point line, which ranked first in the A-10 and 19th in the nation. The Brown and White made at least six trifectas in a contest 18 times, while shooting at least 40 percent 12 times last season. Three players (Kate-lyn Murray, erica schiefen and Jessica Jenkins) nailed 142 combined three-pointers. Murray ended her career ranking third on the St. Bo-naventure all-time three-pointers made list with 197

Double Figures ClubThe Brown and White owned an 8-3 record last season when someone scored 20 or more points in a game. Dana Mitchell led the way in 20-point games with eight and Katelyn Murray tallied behind her with four. When senior ashley edwards had a 10-point game against Ford-ham, all 10 of the Bonnies in coach Crowley’s regular rotation scored in double figures at least once last season. Mitchell led the way with 31 double figure scoring outputs, while Murray notched 21 double figure games.

1,000-500 ClubDana Mitchell collected the 500th rebound of her career in the Brown and White’s loss to duquesne on February 18. With that milestone rebound, Mitchell became just the eighth player in the 38-year history of St. Bonaventure women’s basketball to score 1,000 points and grab 500 rebounds in their career.

two-Minute WarningSt. Bonaventure showed a knack for putting opposing teams away down the stretch last season. The Bonnies were an incredible 21-0 when leading in a game with less than two minutes remaining in the game.

- Returns to the lineup after sitting out last season due to injury

Crowley says:“It will be key for us to get Tiara on the floor and hopefully our training staff can make that happen. T is a point guard through and through. Her whole game is about making other people better. She is an incredible rebounder from the guard position and a really fierce competitor who is a great leader and communicator with her teammates. She will do some things in the stat sheet that will help us, but she’ll do even more behind the scenes that will help us become a very good team.”

- Scored a game-high 16 points against Akron

- Named to Preseason All-Conference first team- Is only 37 points away from a career 1,500 points- Started every game in the past two seasons

Crowley says:“We’re expecting a very big senior year from Dana. Obviously she’s been able to do things her whole career, but what Dana does better than anyone is put the ball in the basket. She did that well last year, but not as well as she’s capable of. She had a down year last year and even with all of our team success her health and some other things weren’t where they needed to be and she didn’t have the year she’s capable of. She came back in great shape this year and has something to prove. Last year she was preseason first team, ended up on the second team. She has something to prove that she’s an elite level player in the Atlantic 10 and we feel in the country and its up to her to prove that.”

She has had an amazing offseason and preseason and has a great mentality and really shoots the ball well. Jess can do some different things to get her shot off as well. She is going to have games where she’s not going to make shots, but she will still make a big impact for us. Senior Dana Mitchell also pitched in netting 15.
