than a blueberry patch or hedge where your family can enjoy the sweet pickings? Cannor Nursery Stores are now offering Northern Highbush blueberry bushes in trios for an extended harvest season. Delicious ‘Reka’ is a very vigorous early-season berry, while popular ‘Bluecrop’ is ripe for eating mid-season and ‘Elliott’ is an autumn-bearing heavy producer.

And, in addition to the ongoing summer feasts, you will enjoy gorgeous burgundy-red foliage throughout the fall.

For the enthusiastic gardener, small spaces can be a bit of a challenge.

Like most gardeners, you may be wishing for the variety of The Butchart Gardens but are confined to a small patio or plot of land. So how can you realize the garden you are hoping for?

When approaching the small space, look to vertical plantings and upright containers. Balcony railings are the perfect rigid frame to place multiple planters at different levels – if the railings were laid flat they would give you the equivalent of a four-foot-wide planting bed. And taller containers allow you to utilize the corners of your patio in a dra-matic way – plant them up with graceful ornamental grasses, berries, dwarf conifers, Oregon grape, brugmansia, phormium or mock orange. Lastly, don’t forget about hanging planters – they fit beauti-fully into just about any free space and you can fill them with fragrant herbs, flowers for vibrant colour, salad greens or hanging tomatoes – or a combination of all of these!

Yes, even a small-space garden can provide a wide variety of opportu-nities to grow what you love and, if well designed, will become a place where you will always wish to be.

Everyone knows there is nothing more restorative to the spirit than the sound and sight of water. But to fully enjoy the beauty of a pond, it is essential to include a healthy selection of aquatic plants. They create symbiosis in a pond’s eco-system while providing numerous benefits. When used in appropriate balance, a well-planted pond is much easier to maintain. In fact, it is the aquatic plants that enable you to appreciate an esthetic masterpiece in your yard – allowing you to fully enjoy

an exciting new type of gardening . . . water gardening!

Here are three key tips on how to balance your pond’s water quality while at the same time creating a visually appealing feature:

1. Cover at least 40 to 60 per cent of your pond’s surface area with plantlife. I know this sounds intimidating but it will prevent a myriad of issues related to photosynthesis and your water column. When the warmer weather brings the

inevitable and dreaded algae bloom, a healthy aquatic ecosystem is key to thwarting it!

2. Add tropical floaters such as water hyacinth (shown) or water lettuce during the summer months to maintain nutrient balance. A super-quick way to cover up some surface area, these amazing plants also absorb nitrates at an alarming rate.

3. If you are able to balance oxygenating pond plants such as elodea (shown) or parrot’s feather with your marginal plants and floaters, life is good! These plants create O2 while the other plants in your pond produce CO2. To maintain a balanced ecosystem, elodea or parrot’s feather remain crucial for any sort of sustainability. Remember, your pond is in constant reproduction. It is host to a daily battle for nutrients and oxygen by varying types of plantlife, bacterial growth and other biological species. Clearly, the key to maintaining balance in our ponds is to mimic Mother Nature and encourage a complex and thriving ecosystem. n
