Thank you for purchasing a Canon product.
The Canon Speedlite 380EX is a Canon EOS-dedicated autofocus zoom flash unit featuringthe newly-developed E-TTL (Evaluative-Through-The-Lens) auto flash control system. ll alsohas two new features: FP (Focal-Plane) flash and FE (Flash Exposure) lock. FP flash enablesthe Speedlite to synchronize with all shutter speeds (high-speed sync) while FE lock locks theflash exposure reading for a specific area. These new features are available when Speedlite380EX is coupled to a Type-A camera (see below).Other features include auto f lash-exposure compensat ion, auto f lash exposure wi th amanually-set shutter speed and aperture, second-curtain synchronization, and multiplejlashcompalibility. When used with a Type-B camera, Speedlite 380EX operates as a TTL autofocus zoom flashu nr t .
The features available with Speedlite 380EX differ depending on the camera it is used with.Refer lo the table below to check your camera lype. This Instructions booklet has separate sections for Type-A and Type-B cameras. Read thesections which apply to your camera.

Canon Speedlite 380EX Features1 E-TTL auto flash control
When Speedlite 380EX is used with a Type-A camera, E-TTL auto llash control takesover. Unlike the A-TTL and TTL aulo flash systems which use a multiple-zone flashmetering sensor lo read the flash exposure, the E-TTL auto flash syslem uses normalevaluative metering with the camera's metering sensor and controls the tlash exposureautomatically. The E-TTL auto flash syslem lhereby controls the flash exposure with higher precision andboosts the performance of the AIM (Advanced Integrated Multi-point) system (which linksthe metering and flash exposure to the focusing point). The E-TTL auto flash system conlrols the exposure of the main subject as well as thebackground for a balanced exposure. lt combines aulomatic exposure control for ambientlight and flash exposure control for both till flash and low-light conditions.
2 FP flash (high-speed sync)When Speedlite 380EX is used with a Type-A camera, it can synchronize with all shutter
FP flash is effective when you want to use fill flash for an ouldoor portrait while creatingbackground blur with a large aperture. Or, when you want to produce a catchlight in thesubject's eyes in daylight.
3 FE lockWhen Speedlite 380EX is used with a Type-A camera, you can lock the correct flashexposure reading for any portion of the picture.
Flash exposure confirmationThe flash confirmation lamp on the back of the Speedlite lights for 2 sec. after the flashfires if the flash exposure was sufficient. lt therefore gives you immediate feedback onproper tlash exposure.
Auto zoomThe flash head zooms automatically for optimum flash coverage for lens focal lengthsranging from 24mm to 105mm.
Bounce flashThe flash head can tilt upward up to 90' lo bounce the flash.
Auto power offlf the Speedlite has been turned on and it is not used for about 90 sec., it turns offautomatically to conserve battery power. To turn on the Speedlite again, press the shutterbutton or the Speedlite's test firing button.
I Speedlite accessories for creative lightingOff-Camera Shoe Cord 2 connects the Soeedlite off the camera while retainino E-TTLauto flash control. Accessories are also available to set up multiple{lash iystemsmaintaining auto llash exposure control.
Speedlite Care1 Speedlite 380EX contains high-voltage circuitry. Never attempt to
disassemble the Speedlite. For any repairs, take the Speedlite to aCanon Service Center.
2 Do not get the Speedlite wet. lf it is exposed to rain or snow, wipeimmediately with a dry cloth.
3 When the Speedlite is not to be used for an extended period, removethe batteries.
4 Avoid put t ing the Speedl i te where i t may be exposed to h ightemperatures. High temperatures may cause the Speedl i te tomalfunction.

8. AF-Assist Beam
l f where you focus lacks sufficient l ight or contrast, the Speedlite's AF-assist beam is emitted automatically to help the camera autofocus. TheAF-assist beam is effective from 0.7 to 10 meters (2.3 to 33 feet).
AF-assist beam activationDepending on the camera and the active focusing point, either the camera's AF-assisl beam orthe Speed-lite's AF-assist beam is emitted. Spee-Oiite 380EX's AF-assist beam is linkable onlyto the center focusing point . l f the camera has only one focusing point (AF {rame), theSoeedlite's AF-assist beam is emitted. lf the camera has multiple focusing points, the camera'sAF-assist beam is emitted instead. With the EOS 50,EOS 5OE,EOS ELAN II ,EOS ELAN tr Eand EOS-1N, Speedl i te 380EX's AF-assist beam is emit ted i f the center focusing point isactive. See page 46.

ll. Speedlite 380EX with Type-A CamerasWith a Type-A camera, you can use Speedlite 380EX's E-TTL auto flashsystem. The E-TTL auto flash system uses the camera's focusing point-l inked, evaluative metering sensor to meter the flash exposure. Flashexposure control is more precise, resulting in a balanced exposure forboth the subject and background in f i l l - f lash or low- l ight condi t ions.Automatic exposure control and flash exposure control are thereforecombined. FP flash and FE lock can also be easilv set.
1. Fully-Automatic Flash OperationFor fully-automatic flash operation, attach Speedlite 3B0EX to a Type-Acamera and set the camera to Program AE ( p ) or Ful l Auto (E; . f f re e-TTL auto flash system then sets the camera's sync speed and apertureautomatically.
