Welcome!
The BJC-8500 prod uces excellent p rint qu ality at high speed . Here is a sum -
mary of your new pr inter s exciting features.
s Improved printing technology
Improved printing has been m ade p ossible with P-POPTM
(Plain Pap er
Optimised Printing) which produces sharp, water-fast text and graphics
pr inting in both colour an d black, mad e possible with a special liqu id
called Ink Op timizer, a new ad ditive to regular black and colour inks. These inks are not easily affected by light and are extremely water-resis-
tant. Although a var iety of special media are available for special print
jobs, you can also use plain pap er to produce h igh -qu ality printing at low
cost.
s Large paper supply
In add ition to its sheet feeder on top of the printer, the pr inter is equipped
with a paper cassette on the bottom of the printer. One additional paper
cassette is available as an option. Both cassettes are universal paper cas-
settes wh ich can be adjusted to hold a variety of stand ard p aper sizes. A
man ual feed slot is also provided on th e back of the pr inter for han d feed-
ing single sheets of thick paper or special med ia.
The total plain paper supp ly capacity of the p rinter is 350 sheets, 100
sheets in the sheet feeder and 250 sheets in the un iversal paper cassette. If
the optional un iversal pap er cassette is installed, it can supply an ad di-
tional 250 sheets for a total of 600 sheets.
s Large ink supply
The large ink tanks can d eliver m ore printed pages. The black ink tank
can p rint u p to approximately 1,000 pages (1500 characters) of normal A4text before replacement, and the colour ink tank (four colours) can p rint
approximately 500 sheets of A4 pages w ith abou t 7.5% coverage.

s Versatile paper supply
The un iversal cassette can be ad justed to accept a variety of standard
paper sizes. Paper and other media can be loaded in the sheet feeder cas-
sette either vertically or horizontally for stand ard Portrait or Landscape
pr inting. This versatility greatly extends the p ossibilities for p rinting, desktop p ublishing, and grap hic advertising that require large pap er
sizes.
s Windows or Macintosh
Printer d rivers are provided on one CD-ROM for Wind ows 3.1, Window s
95, and Wind ows 98 as w ell as for the Macintosh. The printer is also
equipped with a standard IEEE parallel printer port for Wind ows u sers
and an RS422 Stand ard serial pr inter por t for Macintosh users.
s Excellent quality with ful l colour 1200 dpi printing
The high performance print head s of the BJ Cartridges p rodu ce high reso-lution printing at 1200 x 1200 dot per inch precision for photo-realistic
colour or stepped halftones. Although plain pap er can be used w ith excel-
lent results, a large selection of special media are also available for special
pr int jobs
s Colour photo cartridge
In ad dition to the stand ard Color BJ Cartridge BC-81, a newly d eveloped
Color BJ Cartr idge BC-82 Photo is also available for sp ecial print jobs.
When used with H igh Resolution Paper HR-101, or High Gloss Photo
Film HG-201, the Color BJ Cartridge BC-82 Photo produces superior
reproductions of colour photographic images.
s Easy to maintain

s Paper output receiver
The pap er ou tpu t receiver receives each pr inted sheet as it is ejected from
the p rinter and holds it for a few seconds before the movable flaps gently
let it down on top of the stack. This avoids staining between stacked

4 Check the leading edge of the stack inside the printer and make surethat it is below the three tabs at the mouth of the feed slot. If you see
any sheets curling into the feed slot over these tabs, remove the stack
and insert it again. If one or more sheets cur l over these tabs, the
paper will not feed correctly.
x Check the paper limit mark and make sure the top of the stack is
below this mark.
y Move the paper gu ide to the side of the stack until it is snug (not too
tight).
s If the p aper guide is too loose, this can cause paper jams, skewed
feeds or double-feeds.
s If the p aper guide is too tight, this can cause failures to feed,
skewed feeds, or late feeds w herein the pr int head misses the top
margin and prints d irectly on the bare p laten.z If you are loading long paper, pull up the pap er rest.

5 Check the pap er outpu t receiver and pap er outpu t extension.
The paper outpu t receiver paper guide mu st be adjusted to the pap er
size.
If you a re going to pr int on paper larger than A4 or Letter size, pu ll out
the pap er outpu t tray extension.
The extension has two positions for large p aper. You can simply pu ll
out the paper output tray extension (A), or you can also pull out the
entire paper ou tpu t tray (paper cassette lid) with the p aper outp ut tray
extension extended for very large sizes (B).
To attain maximum paper supply capacity
Before you star t a long pr int job, make sure the pap er size and or ienta-
tion of the paper in the sheet feeder m atches the size and orientation of
the pap er loaded in the pap er cassette. Then u se the printer driver to
set the paper source for autom atic selection.
The sheet feeder can hold up to 100 sheets of stand ard (64 gsm) Plain
Paper. After it runs ou t of pap er, paper feed w ill autom atically contin-

gsm) Plain Paper.
If the op tional cassette is installed in the printer, after the stand ard cas-
sette runs ou t of paper, paper feed will automatically continue from the
optional paper cassette wh ich can also hold 250 sheets of stand ard (64
gsm) Plain Paper.
During a long print job, do not allow the printed sheets to stack higherthan 15 mm (about 1/2 inch), approximately 50 sheets of Plain Paperor 40 sheets of High Resolution Paper HR-101.

The Ink Optimizer Tank BCI-8WF, mounted in the left slot of the leftBJ Cartridge, contains a special liquid called an ink optimizer, a newadditive which makes the printed image extremely smear resistant
and water resistant. Please remember that the ink optimizer is usedonly when printing on Plain Paper and is not used for printing onspecial media, or for printing on Plain Paper in draft mode.
Whatever kind of media you d ecide to use, make sure you observe these
general guidelines regarding han dling and storing:
s Always hand le special print media by the ed ges, and never touch the
pr int surface. A scratched or dirty med ia sur face can cause deterioration
in p rint qu ality.
s After opening a package of special pr int media, store the unu sed sheets in
the original packaging on a flat, clean su rface in a location that is notexposed to direct sunlight, dust, high temperature, or high humidity.
s To ensure the best pr int quality and to avoid paper jams, never attempt to
print on pap er that is folded , or curled.
s Before you load a stack of paper, always fan the sheets to reduce static
cling then stack the paper again so all the edges are even.

Ink Optimizer and the selected media
The Ink Op timizer is a special fluid wh ich ensu res that black and colour

When you create text or illustrations, be sure the m argins aroun d the edge
of the pap er are at least as large as those described below.
To ensure the best print quality, use the printing areas recommendedbelow for each type of media. If your text or graphics are outside theprinting area and too close to the edge of the paper, this may resultin poor print quality such as staining near the edges.
For example, printing below the recommend ed area m ay p roduce stains on
