What made a successful vineyard?

• Clearing the land of rocks• Planting choice vines• Building a watchtower, using rocks cleared

from the soil. It provided shelter and a lookout point for the farmer while he guarded his vineyard from thieves and animals.

• Digging a wine press (a trough or small pit in the rock). When they were pressed, grape juice flowed into this trough.

• Building a stone wall and planting a hedge for further protection.

The Davidic Covenant:

– An unconditional promise to David that his throne would last forever (found in 2 Samuel 7:16)

– The people were secure in the promise and forgot about the covenantal responsibility to obey God’s law. Isaiah reminded them that punishment from God was certain if they ignored that responsibility to God.
