The Fall 2020 AAFW-NEI Golf Outing will be held on Thursday, October 22 at the Canterbury Green Golf Course. If you are interesting on being on the Golf Outing committee, just give the office a call and we can send you the next committee meeting date!
I’m sure that we are all going to be ready to get out on the golf course and have fun after the past several months due to Covid-19. You can check out the registration and sponsorship flyer on page 12. This year we have a combo page so you can register and sponsor on the same form! Golfer fees include a goodie bag, greens fees, cart, breakfast and lunch, beverages on the course, and of course contests & prizes! It’s $50 for each golfer or $200 for a foursome. Watch your email and Facebook for updates on special contests and food offerings!
We will be having a shot-gun start for our Scramble Format outing! Not a golfer - scramble means you play off of the best hole off the tee. It’s a great type of play that many different levels of golfers will enjoy playing. Sponsors will have fun games, prizes, and contest of skill on each hole.
We will award 1st place and TWO RANDOM TEAMS DRAWN LIVE as well as FAR FROM PAR for our last place team. Our golf outing will look a little different, but with your help, we can provide a fun, socially distanced event!
Registration/Sponsorship Form - Page 12Registrations & Sponsorships are now being accepted! Call the AAFW-NEI Office with any questions.

Our days are filled with a constant stream of decisions.
Most are mundane, but some are so important that they
can haunt you for the rest of your life.
A recent study from Columbia University found that we’re
bogged down by more than 70 decisions a day. The sheer
number of decisions we have to make each day leads to a
phenomenon called decision fatigue, whereby your brain
actually tires like a muscle.
A new study from the University of Texas shows that even
when our brains aren’t tired, they can make it very difficult
for us to make good decisions. When making a decision,
instead of referencing the knowledge we’ve accumulated,
our brains focus on specific, detailed memories.
For example, if you’re buying a new car and trying to
decide if you should go for the leather seats, even though
you know you can’t afford it, your brain might focus on
memories of the wonderful smell and feel of the leather
seats in your brother’s sports car, when it should be
focused on the misery you’re going to experience when
making your monthly car payments. Since you don’t
have memories of this yet, it’s a hard thing for your brain
to contemplate.
“I am not a product of my circumstances.I am a product of my decisions.” ~ Stephen Covey
Some decisions are minor, such as what to eat, which route
to drive to work, or in what order to tackle tasks; others
are more difficult, such as choosing between two job offers,
whether to move to a new city for someone you love, or
whether to cut a toxic person out of your life. Regardless of
the magnitude of the decision, our brains make it hard for
us to keep the perspective we need to make good choices.
Bronnie Ware spent her career as a palliative care nurse,
working exclusively with people who were 3 to 12 months
from death. She made a habit of asking them about their
greatest regrets, and she heard the same five regrets time
and time again. By studying these regrets, you can make
certain that you make good choices and don’t fall victim to
them yourself.
They wish they hadn’t made decisions based on what other
people think. When you make your decisions based on other
people’s opinions, two things tend to happen:
* You make a poor career choice:
There are too many people out there who studied for a
degree they regret or even spent their lives pursuing a
career they regret. Whether you’re seeking parental
approval or pursuing pay and prestige over passion,
making a poor career choice is a decision that will live
with you forever.
* You fail to uphold your morals:
When you get too caught up in what your boss thinks of
you, how much money you think your spouse needs to
be happy, or how bad you will look if you fail, you are at
high risk of violating your own morals. Your intense desire
to make yourself look good compromises your ability to
stay true to yourself and, ultimately, to feel good.
The best way to avoid falling prey to the opinions of others
is to realize that other people’s opinions are just that --
opinions. Regardless of how great or terrible they think you
are, that’s only their opinion. Your true self-worth comes
from within.
1. They wish they hadn’t worked so hard.
Working hard is a great way to impact the world, to learn,
to grow, to feel accomplished, and sometimes even to find
happiness, but it becomes a problem when you do so at

the expense of the people closest to you. Ironically, we
often work hard to make money for the people we care
about without realizing that they value our company
more than money. The key is to find a balance between
doing what you love and being with the people you love.
Otherwise you’ll look back one day and wish you’d
focused more on the latter.
2. They wish they had expressed their feelings.
We’re taught as children that emotions are dangerous
and that they must be bottled up and controlled. This
usually works at first, but boxing up your feelings causes
them to grow until they erupt. The best thing you can
do is to put your feelings directly on the table. Though
it’s painful to initiate, it forces you to be honest and
transparent.
For example, if you feel as though you don’t make
enough money at work, schedule a meeting with your
boss and propose why you think you’re worth more. As
a result, they will either agree with you and give you a
raise or disagree and tell you what you do need to do to
become more valuable. On the other hand, if you do
nothing and let your feelings fester, this will hinder your
performance and prevent you from reaching your goal.
3. They wish they had stayed in touch with their friends.
When you get caught up in your weekly routine, it’s
easy to lose sight of how important people are to you,
especially those you have to make time for. Relationships
with old friends are among the first things to fall off the
table when we’re busy. This is unfortunate because
spending time with friends is a major stress buster. Close
friends bring you energy, fresh perspectives, and a sense
of belonging, in a way that no one else can.
4. They wish they had let themselves be happy.
When your life is about to end, all the difficulties you’ve
faced suddenly become trivial compared to the good
times. This is because you realize that, more often than
not, suffering is a choice. Unfortunately, most people
realize this far too late. Although we all inevitably
experience pain, how we react to our pain is completely
under our control, as is our ability to experience joy.
Learning to laugh, smile, and be happy (especially when
stressed) is a challenge at times, but it’s one that’s worth
every ounce of effort.
5. Bringing It All Together
Some decisions have
repercussions that can
last a lifetime. Most of
these decisions are made daily, and they require focus
and perspective to keep them from haunting you.

WHAt HAve We LeArNeD?by tim Furlong, my Quarter turns
I’ve been hearing so many amazing stories of how people are coping, and lessons learned from people within the Quarter Turns Universe over the past few months. Probably the most inspiring is how so many of you have gotten to know and re-engage with your families and their work teams at entirely different levels.
With everyone being thrust into the confines of our homesin such immediate fashion, the New Normal of the Family dynamic along with the true dawning of the “Video Conference” has created all sorts of insights and revelations.
I thought I’d share some of them with you this week and also encourage you to add to this list so everyone can learn the lessons that have interested and inspired you as we get through this current challenge together.
One of my clients in Las Vegas has learned exactly what it means to be continuously in the presence of a 3 year old. His job requires non-stop travel, so he never fully understood the challenges his spouse faced on a daily basis to get their toddler up and going and then get herself prepared for the day and her own demanding job. He has concluded that his pre-schooler doesn’t seem to care much about plans and schedules for the day. Anyone who’s ever attempted to negotiate on a 3-year old’s timeline knows exactly what this is like.
Until the pandemic, he had always felt like solid supporter for his wife in the parenting department. Now he understands that he will need to up his game and not just in the work from home period, but especially when things begin to normalize.
He went on to share with me that he’s always known his spouse was an amazing person and that he was lucky to be with her, but he has developed a completely new sense of awe for her ability to stay cool and manage the chaotic business of their family. I encouraged him to share this with her as she may really appreciate hearing that.
Another client in Illinois, that had resisted video conferencing until now told me he was starting to get a true sense of “Who” the team members actually are on his team, rather than just focusing on “What” they do. The new rules of video conferencing are allowing for relaxed dress codes, hats, no make-up, and kids or pets running all throughout the household and interrupting without warning. After all, anyone that’s ever worked from home knows that this simply comes with the territory.
My client marveled at actually getting to be inside his team members homes virtually and seeing their makeshift workspaces. He noticed pictures and momentos that signify who they are and what inspires them outside the office. These insights have given him a new sense of responsibility for his team, and exactly what their business goes to fund in the real world.
He actually teared up as he shared this with me because he now understood how callous he had been at times to the needs of his team and their extreme determination to leave the office at a reasonable hour. The full weight and responsibility of leadership and making good decisions not just for his customers, but for those that do the work in his business to stay in business has placed a new sense of purpose in him to get their company through this challenging time.
The last story I will share with you comes from a client I’ve worked with in California for many years. This company has built an amazing brand in their region over the years and they done it by creating a thriving culture with their organization which they refer as a family of 1,200 team members.
I’ve heard many companies talk about their organizations as a family, but very few of them actually walk the talk of treating their people like a family, especially when things get challenging for the business.
This particular organization has been forced to close their doors several times over the past 10 years, a few times by choice, and a few times due to circumstances beyond their control. They know the impact of their team members being unable to work for even just a few weeks. Because of this, they had a contingency plan that allowed them to put

everyone on paid leave for an extended period. After that they assisted each of their team to transition to one of the government sponsored programs for the rest of the down time which thankfully for them has been over for a few months.
Mostly though they simply communicated with everyone in their organization 2-3 times per day to keep them in the loop and updated on what they are doing, and what their employees should be doing. Now that they are back up and running, engagement levels of their team have been through the roof and employees are doing whatever they can to support the organization that did so much to support them. Now that’s a family!
When I shared with her how amazing their accomplishment was compared to some of the other organizations I’ve encountered, she thanked me. You see there was no playbook for this type of event, and anyone that says they had it all figured out isn’t being truthful. She wasn’t sure if they were doing enough or if it was the right thing to do so hearing some external validation helped her process the enormity of the situation and how their small organization was working to get everyone in their organization through the situation.
I heard Mark Cuban say that the way organizationsrespond to this crisis, and how they take care of their people will define their Brands for the next 20 years.
Work funds life my friends, not the other way around. If we lose sight of why we do what we do, and the people that make it all happen then what are we actually doing this for?
There are so many more success stories out there and so many more lessons learned. I would appreciate if all of you
would take some time today to share what you’ve learned as a result of dealing with our current situation and how it will impact you, your family, your team or your organization in the coming months and years.
Time to start thinking about life in a PC world… “Post Covid”
Cheers to you, your growth, and your health

2019 Rookie of the Year: Kaila Meshack, formerly of CityScape Flats, Barrett & Stokely
Our Rookie of the Year began her current position in early 2019. As a new manager, she had some lofty goals and set out to increase occupancy. By making the community her main primary priority and focus, in her first year, she increased occupancy by 23% in just six months.
This Rookie focuses on team building. As the budget allows, each month the entire team either has a lunch together or participates in a fun team-building activity. She also schedules weekly meetings to keep her entire team up-to-date on projects and responsibilities. She also has the ability to analyze and trouble shoot with her team. She recognized a specific floor plan that the team was struggling to rent, so she implemented the process of replacing the carpet with plank flooring to open up the cozy living room and kitchen. The community instantly noticed an increase in interest of the upgraded floor plan and has started replacing the carpet in other floor plans as well.
This motivated, professional woman is continuously looking for something more meaningful to do to help others succeed through volunteering with Personal Safety Committee with the Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne, and volunteering for RealTalk that helps underage women. She also serves on the Summit Celebration and Golf Outing committees for the association.
From her nomination, “She has definitely been one of the best bosses I’ve ever had! She understands how to lead by example, but not micromanage. She is always there to talk and give advice, yet stays professional. She is going to go very far in this company and industry, and I’m so excited for her future endeavors.” Kaila has relocated to Indianapolis.
2019 Rookie of the Year
2019 Distinguished Service/Outstanding Volunteer of the Year
2019 Distinguished Service/Outstanding Volunteer of the Year: Nikki Gillenwater, New Generation Management
Our Distinguished Service winner is willing to jump in and help, no matter what is needed, through the Association, or with their company. She can be found regularly attending Breakfast Connection meetings, participate in committee work and her company often sponsors event along with the company’s participation in ALL of the association activities.
Our winner has served on the Board of Directors, education committee and is always more than willing to help in any way that she can. Not only will she help, but she will come up with ideas and will work with the committee and staff to make them happen!
In 2019, she has tackled a project for her management company that will help ensure housing for the chronic homeless community through traditional housing in Lafayette. She took it upon herself to do research, visit other properties, meet with other management companies on how to manage this type of housing and attend the Support Housing Institute all while continuing her normal day to day duties. According to the nomination “With the chronic homeless there is a lot of hand holding, training and patients that come with managing and over seeing this type of facility and without her, this may not have been as successful.” With so much to be done, including training, leasing, and the continued hands on took her out of town on several overnights at a time away from her family, and she never faltered on commitment. She is a true representation of the type of employee she is and her dedication to not only her management company but also the community.
Congratulations to our 2019 Summit Celebration Winners ... Watch for more next month

NMHC RENT PAYMENT TRACKER FINDS 86.9% OF APARTMENT HOUSEHOLDS PAID RENT AS OF AUGUST 13
The National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC)’s Rent Payment Tracker found 86.9% of apartment households made a full or partial rent payment by August 13 in its survey of 11.4 million units of professionally managed apartment units across the country.
This is a 2.0-percentage point, or 222,543 -household decrease from the share who paid rent through August 13, 2019 and compares to 87.6 percent that had paid by July 13, 2020. These data encompass a wide variety of market-rate rental properties across the United States, which can vary by size, type and average rental price.
“At a time when the country is continuing to face a pandemic and suffering from a recession, lawmakers in Congress and the Trump administration must come back to the table and work together on passing comprehensive legislation in the next COVID-19 relief package,” said Doug Bibby, NMHC President.
“While NMHC’s Rent Payment Tracker continues to show that many residents have continued to meet their monthly housing obligations, that is due in large part to the relief enacted under the CARES Act. With that support now having expired more than two weeks ago, households across the country are grappling with even greater financial distress. We strongly urge Congressional
leaders and administration officials to extend critical unemployment benefits and create a rental assistance fund so that America’s tens of millions of apartment residents can remain safely and securely housed.”
The NMHC Rent Payment Tracker metric provides insight into changes in resident rent payment behavior over the course of each month, and, as the dataset ages, between months. While the tracker is intended to serve as an indicator of resident financial challenges, it is also intended to track the recovery as well, including the effectiveness of government stimulus and subsidies.
However, noteworthy technical issues may make historical comparisons imprecise. For example, factors such as varying days of the week on which data are collected; individual companies’ differing payment collection policies; shelter-in-place orders’ effects on residents’ ability to deliver payments in person or by mail; the closure of leasing offices, which may delay operators’ payment processing; and other factors can affect how and when rent data is processed and recorded.
Additional resources, data and materials can be found athttps://www.nmhc.org/research-insight/Research-Insight-Knowledge-Library/covid-19-hub/
