Notes from Red Raccoon
Irene Tobias Rodriguez President
I would like to thank the 2016-2017 board for the support they have
been. It has been a terrific group to work with and together we have
accomplished much for CAL.
There will be a smooth transition from the present president and board
to the new one. The new (to be elected) members have joined the
present board the last couple meetings and we are working together on
plans for 2018. Amanda will do a good job as president with the support
of the Board and members.
Plan to attend our November meeting and support our new board
volunteers by voting for the slate of officers (page 3.) Bring a piece of
your artwork for the critique led by Dino.
I have been asked, “Will you still be doing …. after your term as
president is over?” I will continue with the newsletter, the website, and
show sign ups. I will also be on the board as past president.
I have been busy taking old artwork off the shelves for my retrospect
show at Stark State. (See page 4.) The artwork is now on display the
same place we had our CAL show. I hope to see you at the reception

Your Board is looking into the possibility of shows at the following locations for 2018:
Peffer Gallery Foltz Center, East Canton
Glenmoor Country Club Walsh University (Early 2019)
And more...
Nov. 8. A woodblock print I made in the mid
60s has inspired me to make more block prints.
First, I printed my original woodcut of the
horse head on watercolor paper that I had
painted for workshop exercises. The color in
the unfinished work added interesting
backgrounds to the printed image. I am now
cutting more print blocks using Safety-Kut
blocks instead of wood or linoleum. My
students used these when
I was teaching. It is a
rubber material that
looks similar to erasers.
It cuts easily.

Funny Side of Art
December: Pat Waltz
Pat was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania in 1945, and moved to Canton in 1955. She has been drawing since she could hold something with which she could make a mark. Images from nature, especially horses, are her favorite subject. After graduating fromm Glenwood High School in 1963, she worked as a veterinary assistant, floral designer and in retail sales. She sold paintings and drawings here and there until landing a graphic artist job designing logos for trucks and businesses. Later she worked for sign companies. During this time she earned a B.A. in visual art and English from Malone (College) University with teaching credentials for grades 7 through 12 (in 1983.)
After free lancing as a sign painter, designer, and substituted teacher, Pat did graduate studies at Walsh University and Ashland University earning certification in reading, grades K through 12. Activities with horses competed with art for years until age and health problems allowed art to win out. She now enjoys creating art for art’s sake, and has won many awards locally in visual art, quilting, needlework, and fabric sculpture.

An American Journey explores the work of self-taught, American folk artists of the 20th century, Elijah Pierce (1892 – 1984). Pierce was a prolific African American wood carver known for his brightly painted sculptural panels illustrating biblical stories, moral lessons, historical events, and images from
popular culture – a landscape of wood-carved art that is unlike any in America. The exhibit will focus on 40 major works. Featured will be Pierce’s most ambitious carving, “Book of Wood” (1932), consisting of seven panels with 33 scenes illustrating the years Christ lived on the earth, as well as works depicting segregation, the Vietnam War, Watergate, and Civil Rights, among others.
