Capacity Development (CD): A definition
CD in food and nutrition is more than formal
training: includes also human resource
development, organizational, institutional and legal
framework development with aim of enhancing
knowledge and skills (Lopes, Theisohn, 2003)
CD is a long term, continuing process, which gives
primacy to national priorities, policies, plans and
processes
• Regional SCN networks already existed in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Southern Africa
• SCN, UNU and IUNS established a SCN WG on CD in nutrition and related issues in 2001
• Thus CEE is the newest network facilitated by the UNU Food and Nutrition Programme, through SCN
• Kick-off meeting for a capacity development initiative in nutrition in CEE, 19 May 2005 FAO-SEUR office, Budapest
• The inaugural meeting took place in Budapest on the 13-14 February 2006, at the FAO SEUR Office
• Purpose: to initiate and support CD activities in developing research and training in public nutrition based on country specific needs in CEE countries working towards the enhancement of individual, institutional and organizational capacity in food and nutrition.

Workshop: Regional Food Composition Data Base, A FCDM software application in Balkan Food Platform development, Belgrade 26th May 2011, EuroFIR-Nexus &NCDNCEE
Balkan Food Platform
FCDB status:NO FCDBNO electronic version of FCDBYES - electronic version of FCDBYES- software and electronic version of FCDB
Balkan Food Platform:Albania,Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, FYROM,Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Slovenia
Our goal is to develop a regional online food composition database specific for some countries of Central and Eastern Europe and West Balkan
Conclusions
Nutritional training, exchange of information and cooperation with
European projects, networks, UN organizations and research
nutrition institutions are excellent opportunities for CD
The NCDNCEE was a source of new scientific knowledge in
nutrition, a tool to foster regional involvement and identify needs
and opportunities in regional CD
CENM play important role in nutritional research in the CEE region
Further attention should be given to such activities, as well as to
funding initiatives from other sources
Thank you for your attention!
