SOUTHERN PINE BEETLES may be-
come a serious problem in 2017, according
to the Alabama Forestry Commission.
Based on beetle detection flights, beetle
spots have increased each year since 2013.
(2013, 14,620 trees; 2014, 18,785 trees;
2015, 23,545 trees; 2016, 36,346 trees)
Drought-stressed trees are very susceptible.
Sizemore and Sizemore, Inc. in Tallassee,
was formed in 1949 by Dr. William Sizemore and Attorney Mary Sizemore, a husband and wife team. Dr. Sizemore’s Ph.D. in timberland appraisal made him one of the area’s fore-most experts in the subject, and appraisals are still one of the company’s primary areas of specialty. “We appraise timber-lands from Texas to Virginia,” says company chairman Jack Fillingham. He says the process has changed a great deal, large-ly because of computers taking the place of pencil-and-paper work. “We can do a 100,000 acre appraisal probably within two weeks after they give us all the data. When I started, it would have taken us maybe half a year to appraise a tract of land that size.” A satellite office in Sylacauga expands the consultancy’s reach, offering forest management services in a fifteen-county range. Forester Shannon White heads up the Sylacauga office, which has a staff of four to manage roughly 85 thousand acres in that part of the state. Between the two offices, they have ten foresters and five appraisers, some of whom wear both hats. They’ve weathered many industry changes, such as the breakup of large, industry owned tracts of land over the southeast. How-ever, Sizemore & Sizemore keeps the hallmarks of its founders: special expertise in timberland appraisals and the tight-knit spirit of a family business.
Ken Muehlenfeld, project manager with the Ala-
bama Department of Commerce, spoke with us this month about the market outlook for Alabama timber. Though the in-dustry continues its recovery from the last recession, he says investor confidence is improving. From his perspective of work-ing with industry to bring investment to Alabama, the outlook is pretty good. Although 2016 numbers aren’t yet available, 2015 was really good year for capital investment in the forest indus-try. Muehlenfeld says investment has changed over the last few years, shifting from a focus on energy and biofuels during the recession to more traditional forest products. The pulp and pa-per industry has made some high profile investments in upgrad-ing existing facilities, but they are particularly optimistic about panels and lumber manufacturing. The lower production cost and strong resource base of the southern region put us in a good position for attracting new manufacturing capacity, he says. Though the lower stumpage prices aren’t exciting news to land-owners, that’s a key part of attracting new facilities that provide more markets for landowners to sell their timber. For the long-term, Muehlenfeld thinks Alabama and its yellow pine are a good fit for new engineered products like cross-laminated tim-ber (CLT). Though there’s a learning curve, he’s already work-ing with the architecture and forestry schools at Auburn Univer-sity to make sure Alabama is in a good position to support this new product.

THE FATHER OF HEALTH SAVINGS
ACCOUNTS, JOHN GOODMAN, was a
guest on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal,
2/10/17. It is expected that HSAs will be
expanded “under any Republican plan to
overhaul the Affordable Care Act.” Forest
owners who need private health insurance
coverage may find his comments helpful.
TWO APPS —
FARMLOGS is an app that, among other
things, will send you email notifications
when rain has been measured on your prop-
erty.
TANK MIX CALCULATOR: “The calcula-
tor will provide you with the number of
loads required to spray your [area] along
with the proportions of chemicals you will
need.” Source: Alabama Wildlife, Winter
2017.
SIX YEARS AGO we mailed 60,363 bro-
chures describing the association and its
value to forest owners. Our prospect list has
grown, and 70,657 brochures were mailed
in February to landowners who own 40 or
more acres of forestland in our state. While
we realize that most people who receive the
brochure will not join today, we believe it’s
reassuring to them to know that an organi-
zation like the Alabama Forest Owners’
Association is available to them if they
should ever need it.
SUGGESTION ON PREVENTING
TIMBER THEFT: “Make friends with the
neighbors. [Give them your contact infor-
mation.] Ask them to call if they see any-
thing suspicious. Contact them if you are
planning to do some logging so you keep
them in the loop of your activities and build
important relation-
ships.” Source: Caught

“I FOUND THE ROAD TO WEALTH
when I decided that a part of all I earned
was mine to keep.” This quotation and
many others from The Richest Man in
Babylon helped

and energy on buy-
ing his southwest
Kansas farm. Thanks

webpage that is
available to land-
owners to list hunting land for lease is emp-
ty—or nearly so. We receive calls and
emails everyday from hunters searching for
hunting land to lease. To list your land, first
take a look at www.HuntingLand.bz to
review the information needed to list your
land. Then send the information to AFOA
at [email protected]. We’ll publish your listing
to the webpage and you’ll begin receiving
emails and/or phone calls almost immedi-
ately.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: University
of Tennessee Extension Forester Dr. David
Mercker, in a speech at the February 17
Alabama Natural Resources Council Sym-
posium urged attendees to read The Man
Who Made Things Out of Trees by Rob-
ert Penn. Paperback: about $11.
DID YOU KNOW? 4-H has more than 6.5 million members, from ages 5 to 21, in about 90,000 clubs. FFA membership in 2016 was 650,000, a record number. Source: Successful Farming, 2/17.
for surface and mineral owners will be a part of the discussion on Saturday, April 22, when Professional Landman Joe Stephen-son describes some of the services he of-fers. See the Program on page 4.
“...SINCE ALABAMA’S PRIVATE FORESTLANDS contribute a wealth of vital benefits at no cost to the landless ma-jority of the populace, maybe all Alabami-ans who don’t own forestland should be paying a service tax to private forestland owners.” Dr. Doug Phillips wrote the above statement in the Parting Thoughts in the Discovering Alabama Teacher’s Guide for his new video, Alabama Private Forests. While Phillips’ tongue-in-cheek suggestion wasn’t serious, we think it was probably more right than wrong. As we wrote in last month’s newsletter, “we suspect property taxes paid by forestland exceed the value of public services received. Syndicated Col-umnist Bonnie Erbe and UGA Professor Jeffrey Dorfman agreed in interviews with AFOA.” Make plans now to chat with Dr. Doug about your forestland at the Alabama 4-H Center on April 22.
