hace + time expression + que + verb expresses actions that began in the past and have continued into the present

to have been doing something for a certain period of time

Notice the fomula:

• Hace + time expression + que + verb

• Hace dos años que vivo en los EEUU.

• I have been living in the USA for 2 years.

• Hace seis meses que estudiamos español.

• We have been studying Spanish for 6 months.

To express how long it has been since …..just add no before the verb.

• Hace + time expression + que +NO verb

• Hace dos años que no juego al fútbol.

• It has been 2 years since I have played soccer.

• Hace seis meses que no hablamos español.

• It has been 6 months since we have spoken Spanish.

To ask how long an action has been going on:

• ¿Cuánto tiempo + hace + que + (no) verb?

• ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que (no) juegas al ajedrez?

• How long have you been playing chess? (has it been since you’ve played chess)

• Hace tres horas que (no) juego al ajedrez.

• How long has he been eating?

• ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que él come?

• Answer:

Hace media hora que él come.

• How long has it been since he has danced?

• ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que él no baila?

• Answer:

Hace 3 semanas que él no baila.

hacía + time expression + que + verb

had been doing something for a certain period of time

Now, using the imperfect tense, express an action that continued for a period of time in the past:

• Hacía + time expression + que + imperfect verb

• Hacía dos horas que estudiaba.

• I had been studying for 2 hours.

• Hacía una hora que Enrique esperaba.

• Enrique had been waiting for one hour.

• Hacía cuatro años que yo asistía a esa universidad.

• I had been attending that university for four years.

• Elena had been reading for 3 hours.

• _____ tres _____ que Elena _____.

• Hacía tres horas que Elena leía.

• My cousins had been attending this school for 7 years.

• Hacía _____ años _____ mis _____ asistían a esta _____.

• Hacía siete años que mis primos

asistían a esta escuela.

• I had been practicing football for thirty minutes.

• _____ _____ minutos _____ practicaba al _____ _____.

• Hacía treinta minutos que practicaba al

fútbol americano.

To ask how long an action had been going on:

• ¿Cuánto tiempo + hacía + que + imperfect verb?

• ¿Cuánto tiempo hacía que jugabas al ajedrez?

• How long had you been playing chess?

Answer: Hacía tres horas que jugaba al ajedrez.

• How long had you been seeing Juanito?

• ¿_____ tiempo _____ que _____ a Juanito?

• ¿Cuánto tiempo hacía que veías a Juanito?

Answer:

Hacía seis semanas que veía a Juanito.

• How long had you been reading that book?

• ¿Cuánto _____ hacía _____ _____ ese _____?

libro?

Answer:

Hacía ocho días que leía este libro.

• How long had they been doing aerobics?
