Without risk there can be no greatness.

Thank you to Captain Kelly and all our astronauts for taking the risk.

Having the benefit to our society—not only here in the United States but throughout the world with the amount of invention you get from having a space program—is well worth the risk that an individual like myself has to take by flying in the vehicle.

Dominion [NYSE:D] is a home-grown Richmond company with roots extending back to the Colonial era. By the early 1900s, the company began operating as an electric and gas utility under the name Virginia Electric & Power Co. That utility is now known as Dominion Virginia Power, and it is beginning its second century as a provider of electric service to Virginia.

With about 4,000 employees in the Richmond area and more than 9,000 throughout the Commonwealth, today’s Dominion plays a vital role in supporting the state’s economy.

Along with helping to meet Virginia’s energy needs, Dominion is a leading provider of energy and related services in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the U.S.—a market of 60 million homes and businesses where 40 percent of the nation’s energy is consumed. Dominion now serves almost six million retail electric and natural gas customers in 15 states.

Good corporate citizenship and responsible environmental stewardship are integral to Dominion’s business mission. The company’s philanthropic arm, the Dominion Foundation, provides financial support to qualified non-profit organizations in communities where the company does business. In addition, employees contribute more than 125,000 hours of volunteer service to their communities each year.

Among Dominion’s leading outreach programs are EnergyShare, which provides financial assistance to customers who need help paying their energy bills; Project Plant It!, which distributes tree seedlings to more than 35,000 elementary students to help them learn about the environment; and Strong Men and Women in Virginia History, an educational partnership program that provides young people with positive role models of accomplished African-Americans.

Kelly was preparing to command the final flight of Space Shuttle Endeavour when, on January 8, 2011, he learned that his wife, Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, had been critically wounded in an assassination attempt in Tucson, Arizona. This event changed the trajectory of Kelly’s life forever. His dedication to his family and to Giffords’ difficult road to recovery, while continuing to serve his country, captivated the nation and personified the very best of the American spirit.

In May 2011, Captain Kelly commanded the Endeavor’s final mission 200 miles above the earth. Upon returning home, he announced his retirement from the U.S. Navy and NASA in order to fully devote himself to Gifford’s recovery.

In January—on the second anniversary of the shooting in Tucson and following the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut—the couple launched Americans for Responsible Solutions, a campaign to change America’s gun policies.

Mark Kelly is an American astronaut, retired U.S. Navy Captain, experienced naval aviator who flew combat missions during the Gulf War, bestselling-author, and prostate cancer survivor. His life has been a testament to courage, commitment, intelligence and accomplishment. Yet, perhaps his greatest achievements are taking place today beside the woman he loves.

The recipient of numerous military honors, including the Legion of Merit, two Defense Superior Service Medals, and two Distinguished Flying Crosses, Kelly was selected to become an astronaut in 1996. In 2001, he flew the first of his four missions aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour. He also commanded Space Shuttle Discovery, and is one of only two individuals who have visited the International Space Station on four different occasions.

Kelly’s identical twin brother, Scott, is also an astronaut who served as commander of both the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station. They share the distinction of being the only siblings who have traveled in space.

With 6,000 flight hours in more than 50 different aircraft, 375 aircraft carrier landings, 39 combat missions, and more than 50 days logged in space, Captain Kelly is one of our country’s most experienced pilots.

A native of New Jersey, Kelly holds a B.S. degree in marine engineering and nautical science from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, having graduated with highest honors in 1986. He received an M.S. degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1994.

Former CongresswomanGabrielle Giffords

U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) was once described by a fellow Congressman as, “charming, lovely, brilliant, warm, intellectually curious, intellectually honest—and tough as nails. She’s also one of the most beloved members of the House.”

Her toughness and charm have been displayed for the world as “Gabby” courageously battles through recovery from life-threatening head injuries caused by a would-be assassin’s gunfire.

Elected to Arizona’s 8th Congressional District seat three times since 2006, Giffords was meeting with constituents at a local event in Tucson on January 8, 2011 when the gunman opened fire. Six people were killed and 16 others were injured in the attack. Giffords sustained a bullet wound to the head and required immediate neurosurgery. She remained in critical condition for days.

That Gabby Giffords survived the attack is remarkable. That she regained her ability to walk and to speak is astounding, and that she was present as a member of Congress for the State of the Union Address only a year later is nothing short of miraculous. Her road to recovery has been inspirational, but so has her life.

She is only the third woman in Arizona history to be elected to Congress. A Fulbright Scholar, Giffords holds a bachelor of arts degree from Scripps College and a master’s from Cornell University. Before going to Washington, D.C., she served in the Arizona state House of Representatives from 2001 to 2003, and in the Arizona state Senate from 2003 until 2005.

As a member of the U.S. House of

Representatives, Giffords described herself as a moderate, “Blue Dog” Democrat, and was known for supporting bipartisanship and government responsibility. Giffords resigned her Congressional seat in January 2012, choosing to focus on her continued physical and emotional recovery. “I will recover and return,” she said.

In September 2012, she was invited to lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the Democratic National Convention—which she did, to a standing ovation.

In January of this year, Giffords and her husband, Captain Mark Kelly, launched a new gun control initiative, Americans for Responsible Reform, intended to “encourage elected officials to stand up for solutions to prevent gun violence and protect responsible gun ownership by communicating directly with the constituents that elect them.”

Giffords and Kelly still live in Tucson.

We write more than prescriptions. We’re proud of the continued contributions VCU physicians have made to the world

Colin Goddard grew up dreaming of being an astronaut like Mark Kelly, yet today he has much more in common with Gabby Giffords.

As a youngster, Goddard attended both Space Camp and the Advanced Space Academy

in Alabama, experiences which helped shape his desire to become a pilot and an astronaut. After completing high school abroad, he enrolled at Virginia Tech to study physics as an Army ROTC cadet. As a sophomore, his high-flying aspirations were dashed by a vision test which revealed him to be color blind, making him

ineligible for flight school. Then, on April 16, 2007, during his senior

year at Tech, Colin Goddard was shot four times by a gunman. Thirty-three people were killed that day; Goddard is one of only seven students who survived in a classroom of 17 people. Three of the four bullets are still lodged in his body, and a titanium rod is now a framework for his shattered left femur.

Goddard, now 27, graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.A. in International Studies and lives in Washington D.C. He is active with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, using his experience to educate others about the realities of gun violence.

Goddard’s story is the subject of the documentary film, Living for 32.

Strength & Perseverance

www.universalcorp.com

Susan Greenbaum is a singer-songwriter who traveled an interesting road to arrive at her musical career. She grew up in Kansas, graduated magna cum laude from Harvard, and came to Richmond as a corporate officer in one of the city’s Fortune 500 companies.

When her youngest brother, Ron, died of a brain tumor, Susan decided to leave her corporate life and pursue her dream of being a musician. That dream came true and, to date, she has released five CDs, including her latest, This Life.

Susan has won several national songwriting awards, including the Smithsonian Songwriters

Award. Billboard Magazine has called her “a startlingly adept writer” with a voice that is “a strong and clear delight.” Susan honors her family’s philanthropic philosophy by sharing her music with many worthy causes around the city.

Accompanying Susan tonight is percussionist and drummer Chris Parker. A graduate of Shenandoah Conservatory of Music, Chris has played in several bands and for many shows at Barksdale Theater and Swift Creek Mill Playhouse.

Additional information about Susan and her music, including her performance schedule, is available at susangreenbaum.com.

Tonight’s musical performance is made possible by the generous support of Moore Cadillac Company.

Endeavour was NASA’s youngest reusable, winged orbiter, debuting at the Kennedy Space Center in 1991, following the introduction of Columbia in 1981, Challenger in 1983, Discovery in 1984, and Atlantis in 1985. Endeavor was built under intense scrutiny following the tragic explosion of Challenger and the death of its seven crew members in 1986.

Largely assembled from spare parts fabricated during the development of Discovery and Atlantis, Endeavour was christened through a contest initiated by Congress. The name Endeavour was inspired by the 18th century sailing ship that charted the South Pacific under British explorer Captain James Cook.

Endeavour was launched for its inaugural mission on May 7, 1992 and quickly caught the world’s attention, heroically and creatively salvaging the Intelsat-VI communications satellite.

In 1993, Endeavour raced to rendezvous with the Hubble Space Telescope after NASA

ENDEAVOUR:NASA’s Workhorse

determined that the orbiting observatory’s primary mirror had a small but significant flaw. During the 11-day mission, Endeavour’s crew carried out a then-record five spacewalks to install corrective optics and new science instruments. “Hubble” went on to provide stunning and still unfolding discoveries that have helped confirm

the existence of black holes and refine the age of the universe.

Endeavour was truly the workhorse of Space Shuttles, delivering the first connection between the U.S. and the orbiting Russian space station modules, creating the world’s first international space station.

Years later on its final mission, Endeavour delivered the last module needed to complete that space station. It also launched into space the first African-American woman and the first married couple.

Space Shuttle Endeavour enjoys a quiet retirement at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, where it continues to inspire the next generation of space explorers.

We cannot tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end, and to end them we must change. Are we really prepared to say that we’re powerless in the face of such carnage, that the politics are too hard?

— President Barack Obama at the vigil service for Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims

To ban guns because criminals use them is to tell the innocent and law-abiding that their rights and liberties depend not on their own conduct, but on the conduct of the guilty and the lawless, and that the law will permit them to have only such rights and liberties as the lawless will allow.

In response to a horrific series of shootings that has sown terror in our communities, victimized tens of thousands of Americans, and left one of its own bleeding and near death in a Tucson parking lot, Congress has done something quite extraordinary—nothing at all.

Gabrielle Giffords and Mark KellyJanurary 8, 2013 op-ed excerpt

Now is the time for a national policy on guns that takes loopholes out of our laws, automatic weapons out of our neighborhoods, and the tragedies like today (Newtown) out of our future.

— The 700-member, bipartisan Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition

While I favor keeping guns out of the hands of felons, youths, and the mentally impaired, I oppose adding more bureaucratic obstacles that attempt to fight crime by disarming its victims.

— Peter Kasler, New York Times

Most Americans don’t know how weak our guns laws are. Gun owners aren’t licensed.

Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on gun violence on January 30th. (Photo by Susan Walsh/AP Photo)

Gun Control:Voices in the debate

Guns aren’t registered. The Brady Law, named for my husband, required background checks for gun purchases from licensed gun dealers. Most private sales, including those at gun shows and over the Internet, don’t require background checks. It’s insanity.

— Sarah Brady, ChairpersonThe Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence

The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun. I call on Congress today to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every single school in this nation. — Wayne LaPierre, Executive Vice President, NRA

Eighty-five percent of Americans want mandatory handgun registration, a background check, and a 5-day waiting period for purchasing a handgun. Seventy-two percent also want mandatory registration of rifles and shotguns.

— National Gun Policy Survey of the National Opinion Research Center, University of Chicago

Gun control has not worked in D.C. We have the strictest gun laws in the nation and one of the highest murder rates. It’s quicker to pull your Smith and Wesson than to dial 911 if you’re being robbed.

— Lt. Lowell Duckett, PresidentBlack Police Caucus

We can’t just stand behind you and say we support our men and women in the law enforcement community and then not have the laws on the books that help you do your job every day. It’s time that we have an assault weapon ban.

— Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to the Chicago Police Department

The right is absolute. Government has no authority to forbid me from owning a firearm. The debate is not about guns. It is about freedom.

— State Senator Tom McClintock, California

I sympathize with people who want to ban guns, but I can’t agree with them. We have to be careful in our zeal to abolish guns such that we don’t wind up with legislation that will leave armed only the people most likely to do harm with them.

— Hugh Downs, veteran ABC newsman

I give the President credit for sincerity of this. …The problem is he doesn’t know what to do and no one knows what to do. The things he signed today, the executive orders, are useless. It’s the appearance of motion. I think it’s sincere, he wants to do a little at the edges; a little research here, a little encouragement here. But everybody understands it’s not going to make any difference. So, he is saying that the three big items are the ban on assault weapons, on the big magazines, and the idea of having the background checks. I think they are not going to pass. I think he will expend some capital, but the country simply isn’t ready to do anything near that.

— Charles Krauthammer on “Special Report”

There are already at least 250 million guns in America, perhaps as many as 300 million. Unless we’re going to send the police into people’s basements to confiscate guns, there will for many decades be many guns in America. Monsters who want to go on rampages will be able to find firearms of all descriptions.

STABILITY:

We work really hard to be this boring.

Stability is often viewed as unexciting. Yet, by focusing our

decisions based on their long-term viability, we are able

to maintain our financial strength on your behalf. We are

careful not to risk too much, and not to research too little.

The truth is, it takes an awful lot of effort to stay reliable.

And we’ve put that work in daily since 1863.
