MEDAL WINNING MAKERS

Congratulations to Artist: Design Maker Students whose designs were selected for

this year’s British Art Medal Society (BAMS) competition, in particular Evan Moore, who was awarded the prize for ‘Cutting Edge’ design.

Based in the British Museum’s coins and medals department, the BAMS annual Student Medal Project promotes the art of making medals throughout UK art colleges. Each year over one hundred student medals are submitted for judging for prizes and selection for exhibition. Evan was prised by the judges for producing a work that takes the medal slightly outside its usual zone. Evan explained: “I wanted my medal to kinetically explore the battle between nature, the environment and manmade machines of this day and age. The kinetic nature of the medal allows one to rotate the centre combining the two juxtaposing sides.”

The Maker students also exhibited their designs in Cardiff in the Bay from 18th March – 24th April 2016.

Prize-winning medal: Rings of Nature and Machine, Evan Moore.

THE TIPPING POINT

Led by Prof Wendy Keay-Bright and Anna Bhushan, the Tipping Point: How to be a Change

Agent challenged students to consider their role as artists, designers and makers, and use their creative skills to make small interventions with the potential to create big change.

Working on a brief set by Size of Wales, an independent charity that aims to protect an area of rainforest the size of Wales, the students used a range of the mindfulness and co-design techniques employed by Wendy and Anna in their research to develop engagement activates for the charity. By working to a brief and focussing on co-design methods, the students had the opportunity to work as part of a creative team and explore new working practices.

The mindfulness sessions led by Anna also helped students to reflect on the project themes of behaviour change and sustainability. The final ideas were presented to the charity at Cardiff ’s Temple of Peace. Director of the charity, Claire Raisin commented “We are amazed by the quality of the work done in such a short amount of time. The students all stuck to the brief, understood us and our resources. We would love to work with any of the students to take their ideas forward”.

OPPOSING LANDSCAPES

David Fitzjohn, Chris Short, Terhi Sallinen, Jon Clarkson, Prof Andre Stitt, Alexandros

Kontogeorgakopoulos, James Green, Prof Robert Pepperell were amongst the speakers questioning What is the value of landscape art in the 21 Century, at a symposium organised for CSAD staff and students in April. The speakers discussed how landscape art inhabits other art practices and its overall relevance to how artists work today.

OPEN-SHED

Olivia’s research on Open Design and the Fab Lab network, has informed this year’s
