What made you want to study atCSAD?

I had heard about the school fromsome of my friends who used tostudy here. I went to see the summershow, and that helped to make upmy mind. It might sound strange butas soon as I walked into the CSADbuilding I knew it was the right placefor me.

What are you doing/planning to do,career wise?At present I design interiors andfurniture and help to promote asmall company which specializes inan unusual design for households. Itry not to make long distance plansfor the future but I hope that I willalways stay in the creative industry.

What attracted you to study inCardiff?

Cardiff is an unusual city, it is bigenough to have all the facilities youneed as a student but also smallenough to make you feel at home.

What inspires your work?

I feel inspired by individual people, their personal lives, theirpersonalities, behaviour and tinyincidents they come across in theirdaily struggles. It is the insignificantthat is crucial, grasping that glimpseof a moment in order to create. Many times it is the influence ofother artists and their work.

The past is what you cannot ignoreas a designer simply because yourpiece is the result of others’ pieces. It is also your duty to build bridgesbetween what has been said andwhat is there yet to be said.

How did the course at CSAD helpyou to progress?

It helped me because it didn’t stopme from progressing in my own way.I never felt pressured to do anything Ididn’t feel convinced about. It gaveme the freedom to be myself butalso guided me when needed.

Welcome from Dean

At Cardiff School of Art & Design, we believe in being atthe top of our game and that includes being able todeliver programmes that really make a difference. Wegive our students every opportunity to explore all kinds ofcreative and professional possibilities, in an environmentthat recognizes the importance of taking risks and seizingthe initiative. We are interested in ideas and how theseare examined through practice.

We are situated in the real world and recognize the roles that architects, artists, makers and designers can play, not least in the recovery from recession. Weare especially committed to equipping all of our students with the courageand skills needed in a world where they will have much to offer. Because of this, our graduates are able to make a difference, wherever they are and inwhatever field they find themselves in.

Being a CSAD graduate means a lot and employers know this. Our studentswork on real projects for real companies, or show their work in public artsvenues, all before completing their studies. They know how to get on.

All of this happens in one of Europe’s most vibrant capital cities, where cultureand the arts are extraordinarily lively and the mountains and sea close at hand. It’s a city of architects, designers, makers and artists. It’s also a city of sport andentertainment, not to mention Dr Who, Merlin and Sherlock!

We look forward to meeting you and to welcoming you further to Cardiff Schoolof Art & Design.

“The city itself is lovely. There are lots of arcades, old buildings and the parks. You forget you’re inthe city for a while. I’m definitely staying.

With companies like TactileBosch and Chapter based inCardiff, I’ve made a lot ofprofessional contacts. There are a lot moreopportunities here because the course and theindustry are up-and-comingin this area.”Adam Travers, BA (hons) Illustration 2010

From its establishment in1865, Cardiff School of Art & Design has never stopped changing. Why should it? Creativity is never at astandstill; it’s always at theheart of cultural experienceand the forefront ofeconomic possibility. We believe CSAD’s positionas one of Europe’s notedarts schools can beascribed to its ability toboth be in touch with thetimes and ahead of trends.

Undergraduate courses at CSAD from 2012

Page 51: Cardiff School of Art & Design Prospectus

49

We are in the process of introducinga new cutting-edge undergraduatecurriculum, along with new degrees. Our students will work in depth andwith commitment in their chosenfield, whilst working alongsidestudents from other disciplines, sharing ideas and processes. The boundaries erected betweenart, design and architecturaldisciplines are being taken down, whist preserving the very best of ourindividual subject expertise. So, students on the ceramics, textilesand the new designer-makingprogrammes will have opportunitiesto work together, as will ourillustrators, painters and printmakers. Our new programme in architecturewill take inspiration from sculpture;our music technology, industrialdesign and graphics programmeswill experiment with sound and space.

This development springs from ourcommitment to enabling ourgraduates to become flexible, innovative and businesslike, prepared for work environmentswhere they are likely to need to workacross disciplines, as well as in theirown area. Increasingly graduates inthe creative occupations arebuilding-up ‘portfolio careers’, wherethey work on a number of projectsnot necessarily always in theirdiscipline fields. This requiresconsiderable self-reliance andinitiative. Our new portfolio will aimto promote this.

Tomasz Zawistowski, a CSADGraphic Communications graduatefrom 2010, whose image is on thefront cover of this prospectus, iscurrently designing interiors andfurniture, as well as working ingraphics. He is not alone in makingsuch departures; one of our Textilegraduates was snapped-up by anindependent film company at theSummer Show last year, for work as aset designer. There are heaps ofexamples of this and it’s not justabout opportunities for graduates,

it’s also what’s happening in thesector. Creative industries andoccupations are no longer (if theyever were) really specific to anarrow range of skills and ideas.

Take for example, the phenomenalwork of Thomas Heatherwick. It’simpossible to define him as anarchitect, sculptor, industrialdesigner or poet. His studio employspeople with degree backgrounds inarchitecture, urban infrastructure, product design, model-making,fabrication, landscape design, fineart and curation. Their teamworkproduces work of extraordinaryquality and breathtaking beauty.

From 2012 our undergraduateportfolio will be:
