T he Art Academy Foundation is a one year proven route to the university or art school of your choice. By investing an

unrivalled amount of teaching hours in your practice, we will provide you with essential skills, techniques, working habits and analytical tools, that will enable you to fulfil your potential, and embark on a future in the visual arts.

This course develops students’ skills, creativity, conceptual and critical understanding. During the year we will help you to discover the areas of Fine Art that best suit your personality and abilities. At The Art Academy, you are able to choose a bespoke programme of skills workshops. We believe the foundations of a contemporary art practice come from learning technical, analytical and creative skills from a diverse set of professional artists and from your peers.

You will make art in a dynamic, supportive and interdisciplinary environment. Our studios are located in central London, minutes from London Bridge and a five minute walk from Tate Modern, London’s South Bank and many other contemporary art galleries in South London’s bustling cultural hub. You will also get your own dedicated working space in our new site in the Former Newington Library, in Elephant and Castle.

COURSE CONTENTTHE FOUNDATION COURSE

A U T U M N You will actively explore a range of ideas about what art might be. We want you to become confident in your expressive abilities, and to discover the joy of experimentation in a wide range of mediums. This term covers four disciplines to give you an introductory awareness; Drawing, Painting, Installation and Sculpture, and Digital Media.

S P R I N G You will be given the opportunity to select workshops that particularly appeal to you. There is a choice of 3D, 2D or Digital Media intended to give you a greater understanding of different media and techniques.

S U M M E R You will work towards your final exhibition, as well as selecting two final skills workshops to complement and support the development of your work in the final term. Individual tutors and the Head of Foundation will constantly monitor your progress, and each module will be followed by a thorough critique and roundup session.

The Art Academy will provide you with personal tutorial support and teach you practical techniques; an approach which we believe is unlike any similar course in the UK. You will spend three tutored days a week studying at the Academy and at least one further day developing your project work independently. We aim to give you exposure to a wealth of disciplines to help you to discover which areas of fine art best suit your personality and abilities. As well as gaining technical skills, we’ll help you develop independent thought and confidence in your practice.

“The Art Academy's strengths lie in its Fine Arts focus and amazing calibre of teaching. They helped me comprehend what to expect if I was to become an artist myself from their first hand experience. They were also brilliant through my successful UCAS application and I feel like I could still contact almost any of them for guidance, even though I've moved on to study for my BA.”

"For me, your Foundation year should be a year when you can have fun and explore. It’s before you go to university, so it’s a year to decide what path you want to follow.  I always knew that I wanted to do art but I wanted a year to experiment with different mediums, which is what attracted me to the way that The Art Academy F o u n d a t i o n i s structured.

On The Art Academy Foundation you s tar t by do ing different workshops, which give you a rough outline of each medium. You do: Life Drawing, Life Painting, Printing, Sculpture and Film. You get a taste of everything and after that you get to chose your own pathway. The nice thing about the workshop structure is learning from teachers who are also professional artists. You can chose your pathways to fit with the teachers and the work that inspires you.

On Fridays you have personal project days, where you can do anything you like! You can do whatever drives you and The Art Academy will just support you. This is what will develop into your graduate show.  I went in being a strict painter, and I’ve come out really into film. So The Art Academy has opened my eyes to

a new medium.

It’s also a lovely place to be; right between London Bridge and Borough. Everyone here is f r iendly, g r o u n d e d a n d

everyone really gets on. It’s a small community, so it feels kind of like a family environment. It’s really nice seeing how people’s art develops. You feed off it."

We will provide you with the opportunity to develop and hone to a very high standard skills chosen from the full range of artistic mediums (from oil painting or clay moulding to digital media, installation or performance), whilst you also evolve your own artistic language and creative ideas.  You’ll do this within the context of contemporary art practice and thinking.  So, practical, experiential learning is at the core of the programme, but also key is the inter-relationship between practice and scholarship:  we will ensure that the development of your practice is informed by both the development of your practical skills and, equally importantly, by your growing academic knowledge and insight.

"I have a distinct memory of the first time I walked into The Art Academy. I felt like a child who had just walked into Willy Wonker’s Chocolate Factory. I saw fabulous large sculptures being built from models, life drawing, painting and much more; there was so much art work being made everywhere. I had been to many a r t s ch o o l s in London before but had never entered a space quite like this with such a practical hands on approach. I was mesmerised.

In a t ime f raught with discussions about art vs. craft in contemporary art practice, The Art Academy is situated in a very interesting place. You are taught a foundation of artistic skills, you learn to draw and paint and sculpt from scratch. But what is unique about The Art Academy is that you are taught skills whilst engaging with contemporary art practice. This approach was

invaluable for me painting is a visual language and you need to learn how to speak this language before you can use it effectively as an artist; you wouldn’t expect a child to write before teaching them the alphabet.

Professional devel-opment is taught through lectures and visiting professionals, however I learnt the most about what it means to be an artist from working along-side the tutors. The tu-tors are all practising artists and are keen

not only to share their expertise but also teach us what it means to be an artist in real terms. It was a very intensive course. I have never experienced or heard of this level of tutor contact in any other col-lege. I arrived at the Academy with a desire to immerse myself in art, I left equipped with the knowledge and skills and most importantly the confidence to pursue my ca-reer as an artist."

"I came to The Art Academy because of the calibre of its tutors and have not been disappointed – it is quite something as a portrait artist to have your tutors’ work on permanent collection in the National Portrait Gallery.  The past two years have been rigorous to say the least with my family having to cope with me often being too tired to string a sentence together at the end of a day’s painting.

I h a v e t r u l y appreciated the emphasis attached to drawing as the foundation of all artistic skill with our tutors always pushing us to new levels of observation and giving so freely of their expertise in understanding colour and light. My view of myself as an artist has been enhanced by the focus on professional development in which we are required to understand and to prepare to launch ourselves into the art world with advice on marketing,

website design and how to take advantage of art world activities.

My turning point courses have been doing a portrait sculpture course with Suzie Zamit and completing a painted portrait of the same model; learning the wonder of colour from Brendan Kelly, Andy James and

Robin Lee Hall as well as learning a b o u t b o l d brushstrokes from Tai Shen Schierenberg and Tim Benson.

I was delighted this year to have my work accepted for the Royal Society

of Portrait Painters annual exhibition at The Mall galleries and felt honoured to be exhibiting alongside seven of my Art Academy tutors. My next step after my grad show involves preparing for my solo exhibition “The People of Bermuda” as part of my appointment as Artist in residence at The Masterworks Gallery, Bermuda."

"For several years I searched and struggled to f ind a sculpture course that taught both traditional skills and contemporary practice. I couldn’t quite believe it when I found the Art Academy. It is a unique environment.

There is a vast amount of support and constructive criticism all around every day. Studying at The Academy is like joining a family, a small but growing c o m m u n i t y o f creative souls. I am greatly benefiting from being in an environment full of people equally as passionate and devoted as myself. The Academy, to me, is a priceless rare gem of an art school.

The course is structured in such a way that it enables you to choose your own skills workshop courses and I love that I am able to cater my course to meet my own needs. I have allowed myself to be incredibly experimental

in my first year. Project work is taught alongside skills classes, working to a deadline on a concept. Our ideas/artworks are regularly discussed 1-1 with tutors and shown to peers in group critique. Project work has assisted me to think big and try out all sorts of ideas that I may not have had the courage to explore had I not been given so much scope and support. This

aspect of the course is truly stretching me, teaching me to find my own visual and verbal language.

The environment, skills workshops and project work combined provide me with the essential ingredients that I need to flourish. I feel like I’m a sponge soaking up and absorbing the experience everyday both practically and emotionally, treasuring every moment. I feel that the course is helping me obtain the skills, vocabulary and belief to reach my goal of becoming a professional artist."

"In June 2015, Damian Fennell, the creative director of Cityscape Digital, came for a talk at The Art Academy, where I was a 2nd year student. This architectural visu-alisation firm was looking to hire an intern for the summer. Art and technology were always of great interest to me, but I some-times found it com-plicated to articulate the two in a same project. To Damian and Cityscape, that idea seemed to be inherent to the work they produce. And hiring a Fine Art stu-dent meant having someone with an understand-ing of visual arts, to whom they could quickly teach the technical side of things."

Damian Fennell – Cityscape Digital"Cityscape Digital is a CG pro-duction house that for the last 15 years has specialised in visu-alisation for the property indus-try, creating the visuals and films that showed the world what the

likes of The Leadenhall Building and the Battersea Power Sta-tion masterplan would look like, long before they started to even dig foundations. In recent years we have invested our knowl-edge heavily into VR. Behind every powerful piece of 3D and VR software there has to be an

artist. Without the artistic vision and creative knowledge of the artist, the software can create nothing meaningful. And of course we don't need to tell an art school that learn-ing how to control

the software doesn't turn anyone into an artist.

As we hoped, Ninon brought a wealth of well-developed knowledge about imagecraft that made her an instant asset in Photoshop post production on CGIs. What we hadn’t antici-pated was how hardworking and passionate she would be about the work."

“For me, the most beneficial aspect was exploring my ideas using different techniques, the tutors were encouraging and offered a depth of knowledge and skills which allowed me to execute my ideas. Whilst painting in oils, I learnt about different glazes, mediums and finishes which added a new dimension to my work.

I am pleased to say I have grown more confident in my work and how I express myself on canvas. The whole experience at the Academy has very much been a transformative journey not only in terms of my art but also within myself.”

Certificate Student

A sk a recent art school graduate what they most miss about college, and they’ll probably say the sense of purpose and

structure – along with the supportive dialogue about their work provided by fellow students and tutors. This is what our graduates told us, and this is why we launched our Graduate Programme. We don’t know of another one like it.

Open to graduates from any art school it not only acts like a club, or a support network, but is also structured to provide an environment that helps graduates sustain their momentum. It focuses on development of creative practice and pathways for professional growth.

Each programme is a year long and built around salon-style sessions. The sessions are characterised by talks and visiting lecturers but graduates always present their work to one another to discuss its genesis and direction, as a meeting of equal professionals. The idea is to provide a forum which offers stimulus, and positive critique, in a sympathetic setting. Each year the course is led by inspirational artists, this year, Turner Prize winning artists Assemble took the helm.

The course structure consists of six full days of group critiques, lectures and seminars over the course of a year. These are usually spaced two months apart, culminating in a group show organised by the graduates (optional).

Structured to provide an environment that helps graduates sustain their momentum.

“Having a full time job, my art practice has suffered from a lack of time, energy and inspiration. Since undertaking the Art Academy’s graduate programme, however, my practice has been re-invigorated, giving me the focus and drive to develop my work in a supportive and constructive environment.”
