We believe illustration is a speaking art: it arises from aneed to communicate beyond words and an empatheticdesire to influence and enlighten others. Its ancientlanguages originate in gesture and extend from drawingand print to encompass sound, moving image, 3Dmodelling and more recent technologies including thedigital, virtual, haptic and simulated.

Illustration’s spheres of influence extend across the artschool and outwards, to science and medicine,psychology, literature, education, theatre, politics,commerce: the list goes on. It has become a criticaldiscipline for the 21st Century, connecting historicallyestablished practice with contemporary visual enquiryand technological experimentation. At Cardiff, we arepioneering ambitious developments in teaching, practiceand research. The academic team includes practicingillustrators and researchers, experienced in editorial andfine art illustration, animation, visual facilitation andinterdisciplinary arts education. We lead in teachingnarrative form, and aesthetically driven approachesconnecting art, science and technology, rhetoric andforecasting, information and memory.

Our research interests include experimental drawing,visualising abstract thought, and humour. We are co-founders of Illustration Research, which has curated threeinternational symposia: Shadow Play (Cardiff 2010),Illustration and Writing (Manchester 2011) and TheFunction of Folk (Kracow 2012). Science, Imaginationand the Illustration of Knowledge takes place at theOxford University Museums in November 2013. We are members of the editorial panel of the new Journalof Illustration (Intellect, 2013) and are developing a rangeof commercial and artistic outreach projects with partnersoutside academia.

As a force for good, illustration can shed light, heal,reconcile and attempt to explain. It also has free rein topose problems and speak cryptically. At CSAD we areresistant towards the anaesthetic image, preferring workwhich questions and disrupts conventional thinking. To this end, we believe cautionary and prophetic idiomsoffer the illustrator exciting scope for comic and tragicexpression beyond the mundane.

CSAD Illustration offers inspiring contexts for students toapply their imagination and develop the skills andconfidence to operate as creative professionals. BAstudents are encouraged to evolve a distinct voice,technical range and intellectual stance. This is no styleschool: we encourage purposeful output so that ourgraduates can thrive in challenging and complex workingenvironments. Across the degree course, practicalprojects and workshops vary in length and purpose,offering authorial scope and editorial challenge. We aimto foster critical and creative breadth, experimentalcuriosity and an enlarged understanding of illustration’scontexts and purposes.

All students are encouraged to engage with live briefs,ranging from competitions to residencies and exhibitions.There is a strong emphasis on group tutorial teaching andinteractive seminars, enhanced by ‘Muses’ andworkshops by professionals working within and beyondthe discipline. We aim to equip graduates to createindependent practices and to serve as key players andleading lights in publishing, film, animation, theatre, fineart, new media, and emerging fields.

Your studies are built around three fundamental aspectsof what it is to be an Artist, Maker, or Designer: yourunique skills; your creative ideas; and your ability tocontextualise these in a professional situation.

A third of your studies are about developing core skillsand techniques and about identifying what makes yourpersonal creative identity valuable, unique and different.At least 50% of your studies will be delivered throughteaching. We believe it is important that you are taught instudios and workshops by academic and technicalexperts who will give you the individual attention youneed to build a sustainable career.

A third of your studies are about exploring how and whyand if the world came to be as it is and how it might be re-thought or re-imagined.
