What is CARE?

• Six Standards with related Indicators in the areas of:– Knowledge,– Dispositions, and– Performance.

Page 3: CARE and More

5 of 6 Standards = 57 Matrices

• The “Matrices” provide charts in which the student indexes assignments and projects.

• These assignments and projects are matched with (aligned with) a matrix for each of the Performance Indicators for the first five Standards. Standard VI relates to the internship and is documented in the Teacher Candidate Work Sample (TCWS).

• Fifty-seven were chosen for the CARE matrix.

Page 4: CARE and More

Reflection

• In addition, the student writes a reflection for each Performance Indicator.

• The student states why s/he selected that assignment or project and explains how it relates to that Performance Indicator.

Page 5: CARE and More

When does the CARE process begin and end?

• It begins when you are accepted into the Music Education program.

• It continues throughout the courses you take for your professional training. (You should continually be adding artifacts - assignments and projects with your reflections - to the matrix.)

• EDN 302 addresses, particularly, Standards II, IV, and V.

• It ends with your internship.

Page 6: CARE and More

What can you do to help yourself do all of this?

• Especially, work on your own on Standards IV (Instructional Technology) and V (Professionalism).

• Add artifacts (assignments, projects) and reflections throughout your course of study as an education major.

Page 7: CARE and More

What can you do to help yourself do all of this? (continued)

• Use a 3-step system:1. Identify artifacts.2. Make connections between the artifacts and

Performance Indicators.3. Write reflections that show how you are

connecting the above two steps to your own professional development.

Page 8: CARE and More

What about the Knowledge and Dispositions categories listed in

the Standards?

• The Knowledge listings reflect the course content of the education-methods classes.

• The Dispositions listings describe how a successful teacher candidate thinks and feels and what s/he believes. (The Dispositions are used as the basis for the Teacher Candidate Interview.)

Your Philosophy of Education = Your Conceptual Framework

During EDN 302, you will create your written philosophy statement. This Conceptual Framework for Teaching and Learning

• Builds on your own experiences as a learner,• Draws upon all knowledge you have regarding

teaching and learning, and• Reflects what you believe about education.Note: The reflections you write for the CARE matrix will help you

reflect and revise your philosophy.

Page 10: CARE and More

What do you need to do to create a Conceptual Framework?

• Get an attitude adjustment, if necessary:– “Own what you learn or have learned.”

– Look at what you are studying from the standpoint of responsible application in a professional setting.

• Write down your thoughts and ideas:– Engage in critical reflection.

– Keep a reliable record of what you write (i.e., save in more than one way - hard copy, disk, UNCP server).

Page 11: CARE and More

What do you need to do to create a Conceptual Framework? (continued)

• Continue to integrate new knowledge, skills, and dispositions as you go through the Teacher Education program.

• Consciously make connections between what you know and what you believe, as well as between what you believe and what you will do as a teacher.

Page 12: CARE and More

What do you need to do to create a Conceptual Framework? (continued)

• Answer the three fundamental questions:

1. What does a teacher do when planning instruction?

2. What does a teacher do when implementing instruction?

3. What does a teacher do when reflecting on instruction?

Page 13: CARE and More

How do you create a Mission statement?

First, answer three fundamental questions:

1. Why do American pay taxes to support free public schools for all children and youth?

2. What are the purposes of public schooling?

3. What are a teacher’s roles and responsibilities?

Page 14: CARE and More

How do you create a Mission statement? (continued)

Second, draw upon the answers to those 3 questions to address the following:

• What is your mission as a music teacher?– What do you hope to accomplish or achieve?– What impact do you want to have on

children/youth?

Third, prepare your final draft.

Page 15: CARE and More

How do you create a Personal Profile?

• As if you were in a job interview, answer the question:– Tell us about yourself. (Remember, this is a

professional - not personal - position paper.)

• Include a photograph.

Page 16: CARE and More

What are some of the purposes of this massive project?

• To practice the behaviors and demonstrate the skills of successful educators (especially critical self-reflection).

• To connect the seemingly-separate methods classes (the “curriculum threads”) in logical and meaningful ways.

• To document your work (and ours) for UNCP and our accrediting agencies.

• To provide documentation for future employers.• Ultimately, to provide the basis for constructing

your OWN knowledge (as all learners do).
