1. What is your job at the moment? Where is it located?

I am an Administrative Officer with Eastern Health. Our office is located at 187 Kenmount Road, St. John’s, Newfoundland.

2. What are your previous work experiences?

I have held clerical positions with the following employers in St. John’s, Newfoundland: the Labour Relations Division of MUN in St. John’s, the Medical Department with Workplace Health Safety Compensation and I worked in a law firm known as Aylward, Chislett & Whitten for eight years. I also worked in a law firm called Mary Fus Law in Fort St. John, British Columbia for six months.

3. Do you have post secondary training for your job? If so what is it?

Yes I have post-secondary training. I completed a two-year Secretarial Science Program (Medical concentration) at CONA in St. John’s, Newfoundland (then known as the Cabot Institute).

5. How has this job impacted your life?

I have made a career with my job. I have reliable employment and have been able to provide for my family and live a happy and prosperous life.

6. Have you moved for work before? Where?

Yes, I moved from where I grew up in a small community called Duntara to St. John’s, Newfoundland to Fort St. John, British Columbia.

4. Is it possible to advance/ be promoted?

Yes, there are advancement opportunities at my current workplace.

7. Are there any subjects in high school that partially helped you do your job today?

Yes there are subjects that partially help me do my job. Math has been very important during real estate transactions when calculating property closures and also when calculating insurance or business claims. Math is also crucial in my current job when calculating income of employees. The subject of Language has also been very beneficial in my clerical role ensuring accurate grammar, spelling and sentence structure.

8. Did you work during high school?

Yes, I worked during high school. I babysat periodically and I worked on several government-sponsored summer projects.

9. How many years have you been working?

I have been working for 25 years.

10. Is this the job you wanted as a child?

Yes, I have always been interested in Administrative work.

11. When can you retire?

I can retire in 25 years. When I am 67.

12. What are your insurance, health and dental benefits?

I have 100 percent life and extended health coverage. I do have the option for dental but I am covered under my husband’s insurance dental plan which is much better than mine.

13. What encouraged you to pursue this kind of work?

I am confident in my administrative abilities, interested in the field and the job opportunities were plentiful during the time I graduated from College.

14. What hours do you work?

I work from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m on weekdays. With an hour for lunch.

15. How does vacation time and sick leave fit into your work schedule?

I have what’s called a leave bank which consists of 30 days per year and that includes all applicable leave for the year, ie. vacation, sick, bereavement.

16. Is your job difficult? Why?

My job is not difficult by very demanding and complicated. There are strict deadlines and my workload impacts the workload of others and contributes to employee satisfaction within the organization.

17. What are three things you like about your job?

I like the salary, the hours and the administrative work.

18. Do you work with others? Do you enjoy it?

Yes, I work with others daily and enjoy it.

19. How long is your commute to work?

My commute to work takes a half hour in rush-hour traffic.

20. What advice would you give someone if they wanted to pursue the same career as you?

I would tell them to work hard, be flexible, be patient, listen carefully and attentively, have good customer service, treat others fairly and with respect and take pride in yourself and your work.
