Duffy, editor and general manager ofLa
Crosse Magazine:
What is the nature of the content of thismagazine?La Crosse Magazine features stories that
highlight the issues, organizations, events,and individuals who live and work in LaCrosse and the surrounding communities.
What are your primary job duties?As the editor, I plan the production schedulefor each year and work with the editorialstaff to plan the stories. For each issue, Iassign stories to writers, edit the stories, andwork with the creative director to obtain
artwork for the stories. I also edit all of theadvertisements and help coordinate thecompletion of each issue. As GeneralManager, I also work with the salesdepartment to ensure deadlines are met andproduction stays on schedule.
How long have you worked for themagazine?I was hired on August 3, 2007.
What inspired you to take this job?The opportunity to be a part of acommunity-oriented magazine was veryappealing to me.
What do you enjoy most about your job?I enjoy learning about the difference thatindividuals and organizations are making inour community--and then sharing that
information with others. Bringing others'stories to life is so fulfilling.

Job Duties
The job duties of a magazine editor will varybased on the size of the publication and thenature of the publications content. Thefollowing are duties that one may expect tohave as a magazine editor:
overseeing the layout, appearanceand content of feature articles
generating ideas for features withwriting staff
commissioning articles fromfreelance and in-house writers
managing writing staff and freelancefeature writers
editing and re-writing articles, someof which may be rejected or returnedto the writer for revision
overseeing artwork, design andphotography for the features sectionof the magazine
attending photo-shoots
organizing meetings with writers andartists to discuss ideas for artwork,layout and features
negotiating payments with freelancewriters
dealing with legal matters
selecting feature articles for eachissue
sending out briefs to writers whichcan include word count, deadline, feeand writing style
proofreading all pages before goingto press
raising the profile of the magazine
networking with others at industryevents
assisting other staff to meet theirdeadlines
Job Outlook
Currently, the job outlook for magazineeditors is good. Most of the larger magazinecompanies are located in California andNew York, but magazine editing jobs forsmaller companies are everywhere. The risein online publications is resulting in moreopportunities for people who are pursuing acareer as a magazine editor.
Working Conditions
The editorial offices of magazines can bevery busy places. The pressures of the jobare great, and tension increases with theapproach of each deadline. Magazine editors
work with many different kinds of peopleand must coordinate the efforts of writers,photographers, and other editors. The jobalso carries responsibilitynot just to themagazinebut also to the reading public.Each fact must be carefully checked beforepublication. Editors usually work a forty-hour week; however, as deadlines approachor during very busy times, overtime andweekend work are often required.
Salary
The typical average salary of an experiencedmagazine editor is about $46,800 per year.Starting salaries pay an average of about$38,200 per year. A 2004 study indicatedthat magazine editors earned a medianyearly income of $43,620. Higher ranking
editors earned much more.
