CTE SUCCESS STORIES!

Eugene Wolcott (pictured left) of Livingston Manor placed third in the excavator operation competition at the 7th annual Cobleskill Agriculture and Natural Resources High School Day on September 21st. The event is hosted at SUNY Cobleskill by the college and consists of a day of friendly competition between high schools from across the state in events from livestock judging to tree identification to welding as well as campus and facility tours. Eugene was required to score well on both a written exam and on his operation of a Caterpillar excavator through a timed obstacle course to win third place. Eugene is a student in the Sullivan County BOCES Natural Resources Program.

GED News! New Teacher, Mr. Aaron Ward

Aaron Ward took over as GED teacher in the month of October. Aaron served in CTE as the English Language Arts Consultant Teacher for 13 years. He decided to take on the challenge of the GED Program with a strong interest in building student relationships. With the current enrollment in the classroom at 9 and growing, Aaron is building a learning community in room B-7 (RPEC). We are happy to have such an experienced teacher in the program and we wish him the best of luck.

October was a busy month for Animal Science!

Animal Science staff and students brought a petting zoo to the Liberty Harvest Festival on a sunny fall weekend in October. Under the supervision of Barbara Moran, students presented information about different types of farm animals to local children. They demonstrated care and handling of chickens, sheep, goats and miniature horses. Pictured left to right are students Briana McKinney (MCS) and Ginny Gilkeson (RCS).

The Sullivan County Chamber’s Sullivan Leadership Program visited Stone Wall Farms during their Agriculture month. Animal Science students answered questions and gave a tour of the farm to Sullivan County’s future leaders.

Guest speaker and professional horse trainer, Danielle Pinto from Walton, NY visited Stone Wall Farms in October. She demonstrated many training techniques for the students, and 12 grader Destiny Highbaugh (MCS) got in the ring to demonstrate. The Animal Science Program is utilizing many guest speakers this year to broaden students’ knowledge of the careers available within the Animal Science industry and the educational steps needed to reach those careers.

Crime Scene Investigation from the Forensic Science Class

What is forensic Science? In the Alt. ED High School, the forensic science course offered in eleventh grade is an introduction to different biological careers that may be sought after later in life. “Forensic” pertains to the law, but there are many different jobs that students can be introduced to using the skills they are been taught in science, math, English and social studies. Forensic scientists analyze evidence using science, math, and problem solving methods involving complex instruments and techniques. This quarter in forensic class we have begun by introducing what it is like to be a “crime scene investigator”. There are two roles to their job: One is to analyze physical evidence found either on a victim, at the scene of a crime, or both and to compare it to

evidence found on the suspect. The other is to provide expert testimony in a court of law using the information

collected.

As the course began, the students were instructed on the following skills:

Use and read a tape measure correctly.

How to assess a crime scene as an overview and look for details to be compiled into a rough draft drawing.

How to create a scaled drawing from the rough draft converting inches to centimeters. Then using graph paper,

“scale” the drawing to size.

To provide all evidence into a chart that can be correlated to the scaled drawing.

On October 12th the challenge had begun! A crime

scene provided by Gina Conroy, science instructor has offered the students a chance to use their skills and step up to be

a real crime scene investigator. A bathroom provided an excellent spot for these Jr. crime investigators to come

together and use the skilled information taught in class for 5 weeks.

Fay Cerullo, the English teacher, will be coordinating her lessons to help the Jr. Crime Scene Investigators to provide a

written, fact-based report using persuasive essay format, in which the students assert their hypothesis and provide

evidence to support their proposal. Students will learn to create a lead in for the introduction paragraph, describe facts

learned from the crime scene in several body paragraphs, then use that learned information to write a hypothesis with

proof as a conclusion.

Together both Gina and Fay have shown the students how information utilized in the classroom can be used for future

careers. Finally, students have learned that Science and English are not stand alone subjects, but integrated in real life

activities.

Students at the Alternative Education Program participated in “carving” or “painting” pumpkins as part of the Halloween festivities. Students were encouraged to have their pumpkins represent something indicative of what they “like” or their “personalities”. Additionally, pumpkin seeds were collected and roasted for snack on the following day.

On the horizon for Alternative Education... Students will be doing a Party-lite fundraiser to raise money for a field trip to see the movie “The Hobbitt” as a follow-up to reading the novel in class. Reconnecting Youth will be having guest speakers coming in to talk about Substance Abuse, Post- Secondary options, and Alumni speakers.
