Prayer for Animals Fund

In 1996, Dr. Ward established a 501(3)(c) non-profit to raise money to help needy animals in our area. To

date, Prayer for Animals has helped local shelters, provided care for injured stray animals, provided spay/

neuter services to over 200 feral cats and dogs, and aided numerous families in distress.

Meet Orijen Foods

You may have noticed a new pet food on our shelves over the past year. Here’s why we like Orijen foods:

1. Pet Food of the Year 2009-2010Glycemic Research InstituteGRI performs independent analysis on hundreds of pet foods each year. Orijen was selected this year’s best. Because Dr. Ward is so concerned about the effects food has on longevity and disease prevention, this is what he recommends and feeds.

2. Low- and no-grain formulationsWheat and corn are now the most common ingredients in pet foods. Many veterinarians, including Dr. Ward, believe high-grain diets are not as healthy as reduced grain diets.

3. Humanely-raised meat sourcesHow the protein sources are raised and treated is a big concern for veterinarians such as Dr. Ward. Orijen uses organic, wild-caught, free-range and farm-raised sources.

4. Low-carbohydrate formulationsDr. Ward prefers high-protein, low-carb diets for routine diets. Low-glycemic index foods create less inflammation and oxidative stress which makes your pet healthier.

5. Healthy fruits and vegetablesRusset potatoes, black currants, apples an cranberries, sea vegetables - Orijen’s ingredient lists look like a menu for a restaurant Dr. Ward would own! Orijen.ca for more info.

6. Reliable omega-3 sourcesSunflower, flaxseed, canola and coconut lis are POOR sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Orijen uses only animal sources such as fish. Others are simply poorly digestible.

Making Cats More Comfortable at the Vet’sOver the past year, we’ve been quietly experimenting with strategies to make your cat more

comfortable at Seaside Animal Care. The first step was a renewed emphasis on “kitty communication” or how to better read your cat’s body language and techniques to calm nervous felines. This has resulted in slower (aka longer) exams and blood draws but in more purrs. Even if you haven’t noticed, your cats have (and we’re using fewer Band-Aids for our staff!).

The second thing your cat has probably noticed is the addition of a calming pheromone, Feliway, in our exam rooms. We are using a diffuser much like a “plug-in” that disperses a pheromone found in the facial secretions of cats that creates a state of familiarity and security for cats. We’ve also been misting Feliway into carriers are particularly persnickety patients to help ease anxiety.

Finally, our doctors (who all own multiple cats!) have made it a priority to do everything humanly possible to make your cat’s visit a pleasant one. Whether it’s talking quietly, performing the exam in the carrier (top off, of course), showing your cat Every. Single. Thing., we’re committed to providing the best experience for your pet.

For a laugh and additional tips, be sure to check out Dr. Ward’s recent Brunswick Beacon column on this topic.

Diabetes Update: Home Glucose MonitoringFirst we lost PZI insulin. This year they discontinued Vetsulin. Managing a diabetic pet has

never been easy, but this is getting ridiculous. To help you better care for your diabetic pet, we are now offering (and encouraging) home

glucose monitoring with the newly released AlphaTRAK glucose monitoring system. This system, designed especially for dogs and cats, enables almost any pet owner to track blood glucose levels using tiny drops of blood. Previous human glucometers were inaccurate for pets. Incredible!

If you’re interested, please contact us so we may further discuss this exciting advancement in treating diabetes. It’s easier than you’d think and the ability to measure blood sugar in the natural setting is a tremendous benefit. Better measurement means better management.

Eukanuba Low Residue Diet is back! For those of you who loved Eukanuba Low Residue Diet an who haven’t found a suitable substitute

(Orijen, anyone?), we are pleased to announce it’s off of voluntary backorder and in stock. If you
