Term 4 - Week 2 Thursday 16 October 2014

Dear Parents and Carers

During Term 4 the school executive spends quite a bit of time planning the class structure, staffing and class allocations for the

next school year. We will start work on classes for 2015 very shortly. Please read the information below to be well aware of the

process.

2015 Class Placements and Structure

One of the first tasks we do is to divide up the anticipated 880 students across K-6 Years into manageable classes. To do this

accurately, so that classes do not need to be restructured in week 2 next year, we need to know about anyone who may not

have enrolled their children to begin Kindergarten, anyone who is considering repetition, or more importantly, anyone who is

leaving for another school or moving overseas to live. Please contact the school office by phone (95873717) or through an email

to [email protected] or complete a form at the office to advise us of any of these situations.

Many factors are considered when grouping children into classes for the next school year and it is never an easy task to get it

right for every child. Besides the Department’s guidelines about the numbers in each class at different year levels we also

consider:

• academic achievement levels

• special needs consideration ( Gifted and Talented, requiring Support Teacher Assistance, special needs assistance)

• EAL/D phase (how many years a student has been learning English)

• relationships that should be split or continued, (teacher–child, child-child)

• behavioural issues or concerns

• any concerning family issues

• students receiving funding support

• current referrals to the Learning Support Team

• numbers of boys and girls in classes

• teacher allocation

In circumstances where parents have particular concerns or issues about the placement of their child for the next school year

that involve any of the factors above or any other reason, then now is the time to have a discussion with me or the school

executive, by phone, email or by writing a note. Coming to discuss these issues and a child’s placement in the first weeks of next

year is too late. We always undertake to do the very best we can by every student and we require your support to be able to do

this.

By the end of term we will have a class structure developed but as always we will need to review it in the early weeks of the new

term as all enrolment information is finalised.

End of Year Presentation Assemblies

I know parents like to know well in advance about Presentation Day dates and times. We will be conducting three Presentation

Day Events:

1. A Y3-6 Awards Ceremony to be conducted at 9.30am on Wednesday 10 December. The audience for

this event will be all primary students and parents who are able to attend.

2. A K-Y2 Awards Ceremony to be conducted at 11.45am on Wednesday 10 December. The audience for

this event will be all K-Y2 students and parents who are able to attend.

3. The Y3-6 Sports Presentation Ceremony will be held at 9.30am on Friday 12 December.

Relieving Principal

P&C News

P&C meeting.

A combination of the wild weather and four apologies meant that our meeting could not go ahead on Tuesday night. The few

people that came had the pleasure of meeting our new principal, Mr Stephen Vrachas, who made an unexpected visit, and also

enjoyed a lively discussion about the school creed, the canteen and our NAPLAN results until the lights went out- literally!

Thanks to those who attended.

Our next P&C meeting will be held on Tuesday, 11 November at 7.30pm in the Staffroom. This will be our final P&C meeting for

the year.

Family Portrait day – this Sunday, 19 October

Family Portrait Day is finally here at the end of this week – Sunday, 19 October. Thank you to the families who have booked and

paid. The day will definitely go ahead. There are still afternoon timeslots available if you are interested. It only costs $15 to get

a great photo of your family.

If you have not booked yet but would like to: please SMS Marrianne Skinner as soon as possible on 0414 354990 or email

[email protected] with ‘Family Photos’ in the subject line. To have your time confirmed, you need to send $15 in an

envelope marked ‘Family Photos’ and your child’s name and class clearly marked and put it in the office slot before the end of

this week. A contact phone number would also be useful.

Apologies that confirmation slips did not go out on Wednesday – they will go out today with the oldest child. Please make sure

you are on time so the day can run smoothly.

As an incentive for those families who purchase the ‘Portrait Collection’ for $199 on the Viewing Day, they will have a chance to

go in the draw to have the cost of their ‘Portrait Collection’ reimbursed. That’s $199 worth of photos for free.

2nd hand uniforms – wanted

No doubt with the warmer weather approaching many families may have some summer uniforms that no longer fit their

growing children. If you have any unwanted, clean uniforms please drop them into the office next week for our upcoming 2nd

Hand Uniform stall in Week 4. We desperately need summer girls’ uniforms, skorts and hats/caps, but all items are gratefully

accepted.

Bunnings BBQ fundraiser

Don’t forget our fundraiser at Bunnings, Rockdale on Saturday, 6 December. If you have already volunteered to help on the day,

thank you, but if you have a hour or so to spare please email us at [email protected] with ‘Bunnings BBQ’ in the subject

line. The more the merrier!

School Banking

The rostered banking coordinators for Week 3 are Marrianne S, Julie R and Shirley D. To allow the opportunity for school

banking parents to attend the Selective Schools meeting on that morning, School Banking will start at 10am on that day only.

Two new competitions

1. Is your child a Smart Saver?

We recently measured the Savings IQ of the nation and found that Australians who learn about money management at school

grow up to become smarter savers in their adult life. So we know that our School Banking program pays off.

To celebrate our next generation of skillful savers, we have launched a Search for Australia’s Smart School Savers.

Parents can visit www.commbank.com.au/smartschoolsavers and have their child tell us in 50 words or less what they are

saving for and how they plan to achieve it. The competition is open to children aged between 5 to 12 years of age.

There are some great prizes up for grabs – including a national prize of $1,000 and iPads for six regional winners.

2. The Dollarmites have discovered the Clam of Fortune.

This competition rewards regular saving. The Clam of Fortune is a mythical shell packed with precious prizes.

The prizes are:

• 40 x GoPro HERO3 White Edition Cameras

• 150 x Slip ‘N Slide Double Wave Riders

To be in the running to win, students simply need to make a School Banking deposit between 20 October (our next banking day)

and 30 November, 2014, regardless of the value of their deposit. They then will automatically entered into the competition. The

more times they deposit, the more chances they have to win (up to a maximum of 6 entries). So bank every week from next

Tuesday till 30 November and your child will get six entries into the competition. Rewards

There are now two new rewards on offer for school banking. The Projector Cup and Sea Streamers will be available along with

the Moneybox and Swimming bag. The penguin bag tag is no longer available.

Classroom Achievement awards – KJ

Congratulations to KJ who has won the award this week. Well done!

Gold Awards & Silver Awards

Silver awards are presented to children when they have received 5 Bronze Awards = 50 tokens. Gold awards are presented to children when they have received 10 Bronze Awards = 100 tokens. A fantastic effort! Parents are most welcome to attend the assembly to see their child receive their very special award.

Walkathon

Next Thursday 23 October at 9:30 we will be holding our annual Walkathon. Kindergarten students will be walking around Bill

Whaley Reserve, Stage 1 students will walk on the new grass fields in the school, Stage 2 students will walk around the block

which encompasses the school and Stage 3 students will be walking around Tindale Reserve, near Carlton shops. Each student

has taken home a green card to use for sponsors’ donations. These cards will need to be brought to school on the day of the

Walkathon so teachers can certify the number of laps the students complete and enter it on the card. After the Walkathon these

cards will be sent home so that the students can collect the money from their sponsors.

The student in each class who raises the most money will win an Adidas soccer ball and the person in each Stage who raises the

most money will win a $50 gift voucher. All money and green cards are to be returned to the office by 5 November, 2014.

Winners will be announced at the Week 7 Assemblies.

Inter-School Chess Challenge Finals- Strathfield

On 12 September, the Carlton Public School Chess Team travelled to the Sydney Latvian Society in Strathfield for the finals. The

tournament was 7 rounds and a non-knockout tournament, or “Swiss”. There were a vast amount of schools competing in the

finals, including our arch-rival, Summer Hill Public School, former champions Baulkham Hills North, and strong Lindfield.

Our first rounds went okay with a couple of wins. We progressed slowly, rising slowly until we were 5th

in the fifth round. We

racked up four wins, catapulting us up to 3rd

. However, our last two rounds were a disaster. Champion player Gordon Y, who was

the top seed, lost to Anthony F in a nail-biting sixth round. It was only a couple of last points that scored us 5th

in the sixth round.

We were 1.5 points away from Summer Hill, but we scored the same number of points as they did in the last round. We finished

a credible fifth in the grand-final. We enjoyed the opportunity to represent the school at this tournament.

From Gordon and Garret.

Night of the Stars Auditions

Night of the Stars will be held again this year. The auditions will be held in Week 4 on Wednesday October 29 and the night performance will be in Week 7 on Tuesday November 18. All children who are interested in auditioning must have their item ready on the audition date. As always, Miss Flowers and Mrs O'Grady are looking forward to being entertained by the talented pupils of Carlton Public School. Any children wishing to be part of the audience for the performance will not be admitted unless they are accompanied by an adult. Miss Flowers and Mrs O'Grady

Borneo Cup Football Tournament- By Dejan B 6S

Football paradise- Singapore and Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia were the places to be during our school holidays. In the second week of the school holidays, together with my football team, we went to Singapore and Kota Kinabalu where we participated in the thrilling Borneo Cup Football Tournament against challenging opponents in extreme heat and humidity. Despite our seven hour flight from Sydney to Singapore and our entrance into a humid atmosphere with temperatures reaching 40 degrees, we got straight into training which was extremely exhausting. Whilst we remained in Singapore for three days we played numerous pre-tournament matches against very skilful and talented footballers. This was without a doubt a remarkable experience to part a part of, as their style for play had slight differences when compared to our style of play. This definitely gave us an insight into the expected level of play, allowing us to enter the Borneo Cup in Kota Kinabalu with a better idea of their football abilities. Following our preparation in Singapore we then flew to Kota Kinabalu where we prepared ourselves both physically and psychologically for the eventful football filled tournament. I was very honoured when my coach asked me to take on the captaincy role for my team throughout the tournament. Based on the strong opponents we faced in Singapore, I knew that winning wasn’t going to be an easy task to accomplish. However, I had great faith in my team’s abilities. Regardless of the extreme heat, humidity or rain, all games were played. Throughout the tournament we played five challenging and physical matches against the strong U13 opponents in six days. I believe that it was through our strong team enthusiasm and dedication that together as a team we were able to hold it together and come out firing and determined to do our best, giving our opponents a shake to finish off the tournament with a win. What a feeling! Overall, it goes without saying that our preparation and participation as a team with the guidance of our coach in the Borneo Cup was a challenging but worthwhile experience. Something we will remember always. Hopefully we will be able to take on board the extremely beneficial learning experiences we received and develop further with the prospect of returning to the Borneo Cup tournament next year.
