O RDER OF S ERVICE Processional Hymn:

Once in royal David's cityStood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her BabyIn a manger for His bed:Mary was that mother mild,Jesus Christ her little Child.

He came down to earth from heaven, Who is God and Lord of all, And His shelter was a stable, And His cradle was a stall; With the poor, and mean, and lowly,Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

And through all His wondrous childhoodHe would honour and obey,Love and watch the lowly maiden,In whose gentle arms He lay:Christian children all must beMild, obedient, good as He.

For he is our childhood's pattern;Day by day, like us He grew;He was little, weak and helpless,

Tears and smiles like us He knew; And He feeleth for our sadness, And He shareth in our gladness.

And our eyes at last shall see Him, Through His own redeeming love;For that Child so dear and gentleIs our Lord in heaven above,

And He leads His children on To the place where He is gone.

Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see Him; but in heaven,Set at God's right hand on high;

Where like stars His children crowned All in white shall wait around.WORDS: CECILFRANCES ALEXANDER TUNE: IRBT (HENRY GAUNTKETT) DESCANT: STEPHEN CLEOBURY

Bidding Prayer:Beloved in Christ, be it this Christmas time our care and delight toprepare ourselves to hear again the message of the angels; in heart andmind to go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to

pass, and the Babe lying in a manger.Let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes ofGod from the rst days of our disobedience unto the gloriousRedemption brought us by this Holy Child; and let us make this Chapelglad with our carols of praise:

But rst let us pray for the needs of his whole world; for peace andgoodwill over all the earth; for unity and brotherhood within the Church

he came to build, and especially in the dominions of our sovereign ladyQueen Elizabeth, within this City of Edinburgh, and in this Chapel: Andbecause this of all things would rejoice his heart, let us at this timeremember in his name the poor and the helpless, the cold, the hungryand the oppressed; the sick in body and in mind and them that mourn;the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; all who knownot the Lord Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved hisheart of love.

Lastly let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us, butupon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no mancan number, whose hope was in the Word made esh, and with whom, inthis Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one.

These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the throne ofheaven, in the words which Christ himself hath taught us:

Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name, Thykingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give usthis day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we

forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not intotemptation; But deliver us from evil. Amen

The Almighty God bless us with his grace: Christ give us the joys ofeverlasting life: and unto the fellowship of the citizens above may theKing of Angels bring us all. Amen.

First Lesson: Genesis 3 In the BeginningRead by Neil Morrison OBE, TrusteeAnd they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in thecool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presenceof the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. And the Lord Godcalled unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, Iheard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and

I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hastthou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldestnot eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me,she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto thewoman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, Theserpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto theserpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle,and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dustshalt thou eat all the days of thy life: and I will put enmity between theeand the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy

Hymn:O little town of Bethlehem,How still we see thee lie!

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light;

The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight.

O morning stars together,Proclaim the holy birth,

And praises sing to God the King, And peace to men on earth!For Christ is born of Mary,

And gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love.

The blessings of His Heav’n. No ear may hear His coming,But in this world of sin,Where meek souls will receive Him still,The dear Christ enters in.

Where misery cries out to Thee,Son of the mother mild;

Where charity stands watching And faith holds wide the door, The dark night wakes, the glory breaks, And Christmas comes once more.

O holy Child of Bethlehem,Descend to us, we pray;

Cast out our sin, and enter in,Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell;O come to us, abide with us,Our Lord Emmanuel!WORDS: PHILLIPS BROOKS TUNE: FOREST GREEN (TRAD. ENGLISH ARR. R. VAUGHAN WILLIAMS; VERSE 3: PHILIP LEDGER)DESCANT: THOMAS ARMSTRONG

Read by Gill Salvesen, Friend of The Robin ChapelAnd in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a cityof Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name asJoseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And theangel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, theLord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw

him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what mannerof salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary:for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive inthy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall

be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord Godshall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reignover the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be noend. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not

a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shallcome upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee:therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be calledthe Son of God. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be itunto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

Fourth Lesson: Luke 2 A child is born Read by Gavin Bolus, Friend of the Robin ChapelAnd it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree fromCæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And all went to betaxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee,out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which iscalled Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) Tobe taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it

was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that sheshould be delivered. And she brought forth her rstborn son, andwrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; becausethere was no room for them in the inn.

Choir: Harold Darke In the bleak midwinterIn the bleak midwinter Frosty wind made moan,Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,

In the bleak midwinter, long ago.Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain;Heaven and earth hall flee away when he comes to reign;In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficedThe Lord God almighty, Jesus Christ.

Enough for him, whom Cherubim Worship night and day,A breast full of milk and a manger full of hay.Enough for him, whom angels fall down before,,The ox and ass and camel which adore.

What can I give him, poor as I am?If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb,If I were a wise man I would do my part,Yet what I can I give him — Give my heart.WORDS: CHRISTINA ROSSETTI

Hymn:

While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around.

A Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, And this shall be the sign.

Sixth Lesson: Matthew 2 The Wise MenRead by Elizabeth Cumming, Friend of The Robin Chapel Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judæa in the days of Herodthe king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his

star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king hadheard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Andwhen he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the peopletogether, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they

said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judæa: for thus it is written by theprophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the leastamong the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, thatshall rule my people Israel. Then Herod, when he had privily called thewise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. Andhe sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for theyoung child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that Imay come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they

departed; and lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them,till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they sawthe star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they werecome into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother,and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened theirtreasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, andmyrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not returnto Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

Seventh Lesson: John 1 LogosRead by The Chaplain In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and theWord was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things weremade by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shinethin darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a mansent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, tobear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. Hewas not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That wasthe true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. Hewas in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knewhim not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as

many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons ofGod, even to them that believe on his name: who were born, not of blood,nor of the will of the esh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And theWord was made esh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, theglory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
