    Processional Hymn:

    Of the Father's heart begoen,

    Ere the world from aos rose,

    He is Alpha, from that Fountain

    All that is and has been ows;

    He is Omega, of all things,

    Yet to come the distant Close,

    Evermore and evermore.

    By His word was all created

    He commanded and 'twas done;

    Earth and sky and boundless ocean,

    Universe of three in one,

    All that sees the moon's soft radiance,

    All that breathes beneath the sun:

    He assumed this mortal body,

    Frail and feeble, doomed to die,

    at the race from dust created,

    Might not perish uerly,

    Whi the dreadful Law had sentenced

    In the depths of hell to lie:

    O how blest that wondrous birthday,

    When the Maid the curse retrieved,

    Brought to birth mankind's salvation

    By the Holy Ghost conceived,

    And the Babe, the world's Redeemer

    In her loving arms received:

    Sing, ye heights of heaven, his praises;

    Angels and Arangels, sing!

    Bidding Prayer:

    Beloved in Christ, be it this Christmas time our care and delight to pre-

    pare ourselves to hear again the message of the angels; in heart and mindto go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing whi is come to pass, and

    the Babe lying in a manger.

    Let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of

    God from the rst days of our disobedience unto the glorious Redemp-

    tion brought us by this Holy Child; and let us make this Chapel, dedicat-

    ed to Mary, his most blessed Mother, glad with our carols of praise:

    But rst let us pray for the needs of his whole world; for peace and good-

    will over all the earth; for unity and brotherhood within the Chur he

    came to build, and especially in the dominions of our sovereign lady

    Qeen Elizabeth, within this City of Edinburgh, and in this Chapel: And

    because this of all things would rejoice his heart, let us at this time re-

    member in his name the poor and the helpless, the cold, the hungry and

    the oppressed; the si in body and in mind and them that mourn; the

    lonely and the unloved; the aged and the lile ildren; all who know notthe Lord Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his heart

    of love.

    Lastly let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us, but up-

    on another shore and in a greater light, that multitude whi no man can

    number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in

    this Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one.

    ese prayers and praises let us humbly oer up to the throne of heaven,

    in the words whi Christ himself hath taught us:

    daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that

    trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us

    from evil. Amen

    e Almighty God bless us with his grace: Christ give us the joys of ever-

    lasting life: and unto the fellowship of the citizens above may the King of

    Angels bring us all. Amen.

    First Lesson: Genesis 3

    And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the

    cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence

    of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. And the Lord God

    called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I

    heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and

    I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast

    thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not

    eat? And the man said, e woman whom thou gavest to be with me, shegave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the wom-

    an, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, e serpent

    beguiled me, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Be-

    cause thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cale, and above eve-

    ry beast of the eld; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat

    all the days of thy life: and I will put enmity between thee and the wom-

    an, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thoushalt bruise his heel. And unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply

    thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth ildren;

    and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. And

    wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of whi I commanded thee, saying, ou

    shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou

    eat of it all the days of thy life; thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth

    to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the eld; in the sweat of thy faceshalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast

    Second Lesson: Isaiah 9

    e people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that

    dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light

    shined. For unto us a ild is born, unto us a son is given: and the gov-

    ernment shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Won-

    derful, Counsellor, e mighty God, e everlasting Father, e Prince of

    Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end,

    upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to es-

    tablish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever.

    e zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

    Hymn:

    It came upon a midnight clear,

    at glorious song of old,

    From angels bending near the earth,

    To tou their harps of gold:

    "Peace on the earth, goodwill to men,

    From heaven's all-gracious King."

    e world in solemn stillness lay,

    To hear the angels sing.

    Still through the cloven skies they come,

    With peaceful wings unfurled,

    And still their heavenly music oats

    O'er all the weary world;

    Above its sad and lowly plains,

    ey bend on hovering wing,

    And ever o'er its Babel sounds

    e blessd angels sing.

    Yet with the woes of sin and strife

    e world has suered long;

    Beneath the angel-strain have rolled

    Two thousand years of wrong;

    And man, at war with man, hears not

    e love-song whi they bring;

    O hush the noise, ye men of strife,

    And hear the angels sing.

    And ye, beneath life's crushing load,

    Whose forms are bending low,

    Who toil along the climbing way

    With painful steps and slow,

    Look now! for glad and golden hours

    come swiftly on the wing.

    O rest beside the weary road,

    And hear the angels sing!

    For lo!, the days are hastening on,

    By prophet bards foretold,

    When with the ever-circling years

    Comes round the age of gold

    When peace shall over all the earth

    Its ancient splendours ing,

    And the whole world give ba the song

    Whi now the angels sing.

    ird Lesson: Luke 1

    And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city

    of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name

    as Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgins name was Mary. And

    the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured,the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw

    him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of

    salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for

    thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in

    thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall

    be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God

    shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign overthe house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

    en said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a

    man? And the angel answered and said unto her, e Holy Ghost shall

    come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee:

    therefore also that holy thing whi shall be born of thee shall be called

    the Son of God. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it

    unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

    Fourth Lesson: Luke 2

    And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from

    Csar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And all went to be

    taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee,

    out of the city of Nazareth, into Juda, unto the city of David, whi iscalled Bethlehem; because he was of the house and lineage of David: To

    be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with ild. And so it

    was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she

    should be delivered. And she brought forth her rstborn son, and

    wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because

    there was no room for them in the inn.

    and peace to men on earth!

    For Christ is born of Mary,

    and gathered all above,

    While mortals sleep, the angels keep

    How silently, how silently,

    the wondrous Gift is givn;

    So God imparts to human hearts

    the blessings of His Heavn.

    No ear may hear His coming,

    but in this world of sin,

    Where meek souls will receive Him still,

    the dear Christ enters in.

    Where ildren pure and happy

    Where misery cries out to ee,

    Son of the mother mild;

    Where arity stands wating

    and faith holds wide the door,

    e dark night wakes, the glory breaks,

    and Christmas comes once more.

    O holy Child of Bethlehem,

    descend to us, we pray;

    Cast out our sin, and enter in,

    ing wat over their flo by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came

    upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they

    were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, Ibring you good tidings of great joy, whi shall be to all people. For unto

    you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, whi is Christ the

    Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall nd the babe wrapped

    in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with

    the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glo-

    ry to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And

    it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, theshepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and

    Sixth Lesson: Mahew 2

    Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Juda in the days of Herod

    the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying,

    Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the

    east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard the-se things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had

    gathered all the ief priests and scribes of the people together, he de-

    manded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him,

    In Bethlehem of Juda: for thus it is wrien by the prophet, And thou

    Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Ju-

    da: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

    en Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of themdiligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem,

    and said, Go and sear diligently for the young ild; and when ye have

    found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

    When they had heard the king, they departed; and lo, the star, whi

    they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where

    the young ild was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceed-

    ing great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the

    young ild with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him:

    and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts;

    gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream

    that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own coun-

    try another way.

    Seventh Lesson: John 1

    In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the

    Word was God. e same was in the beginning with God. All thingswere made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was

    made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light

    to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. He

    was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. at was the

    true light, whi lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was

    in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew himnot. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many

    as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even

    to them that believe on his name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the

    will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was
