5Muybridge Study of Movement

Fall 2013 | ARC 201 - Matteo Rapallini

This project began with the study of the human body and specific movements such as walking, dancing, climbing stairs, or getting into a hammock. These movements were incorporated into a small space, which was pushed and pulled to allow for the movement within it. My small space takes place on a mountainside where you climb stairs that ascend with the mountain. Once inside the open space showcases the expansive mountain view highlighted further by the transparent glass ceiling while the more enclosed rear creates a private space to relax in the hammock.

Spring 2015 | ARC 302 - Marshall Purnell

My idea for the College of Design expansion evolved to encourage students and staff to make better use of the outdoor space surrounding their facilities. To better integrate the indoor and outdoor spaces I focused on creating counterbalanced courtyards: one courtyard is enclosed by the College of Design and the other is enclosed by a nearby residence hall (see site plan elevation, page 14). The College of Design and the residence hall follow the grid created by the adjacent buildings, SAS Hall and Kamphoefner Hall, however these structures also limit the available outdoor space. The counterbalanced courtyards are planned as unifying elements between the College of Design and the residence hall as well as optimizing the exterior space surrounding them.

Carmichael Gym Bus Stop

Final Model: South View

A bird’s nest was the inspiration and secondary purpose for this bus stop. The bus stop form developed from a geometric pattern, using rounded shapes that nestle together to create the roof. The seats below this canopy are intended for people to perch on rather than sit while waiting for their bus. The structure is created using glued laminated timber frames while a molded translucent membrane creates the roof that allows diffuse light to enter the space.

WHVN Studio

Final Model: North West View

WHVN Studio is intended to be a TV studio that only shows the work of the deceased. Thus we chose to represent WHVN as heaven. Following this theme we designed the building to follow the curve of a circle; a geometrically correct circle is a perfect shape, an apt metaphor for heaven considered by many to be the perfect place. The studios are expressed on the exterior of the building as the elements that rise above the rest of the structure. Between the studios are sloped roofs that express the circulation and support spaces. The rear facade of the building is angled to address the solar orientation of the building, allowing more natural light to enter. It also has overhangs sized differently depends on how much sun the face receives to allow for better control over the light entering the space.

Spring 2014 | ARC 202 - Burak Erdim

Museum of the City

Diagram of Surroundings, Charleston, SC

The object of this infill project was to design, within a prescribed area, a Museum of the City for Charleston, South Carolina The project began with a trip to the city to study the site as well as the surrounding precinct. Drawings and a model were created to demonstrate the information gathered on-site. The given program included a volume of center and a volume of line. My scheme embeds the volume of center into the ground in order to keep the height of the new structure lower than that of the surrounding buildings. The volume of line is largely transparent and coincides with Water Street, which is at a sharp angle from Meeting Street. The form of this building was designed to address the site created by the intersection of the two streets while allowing for a private interior courtyard space.
