Architectural Survey File
This is the architectural survey file for this MIHP record. The survey file is organized reverse-
chronological (that is, with the latest material on top). It contains all MIHP inventory forms, National
Register nomination forms, determinations of eligibility (DOE) forms, and accompanying documentation
such as photographs and maps.
Users should be aware that additional undigitized material about this property may be found in on-site
architectural reports, copies of HABS/HAER or other documentation, drawings, and the “vertical files” at
the MHT Library in Crownsville. The vertical files may include newspaper clippings, field notes, draft
versions of forms and architectural reports, photographs, maps, and drawings. Researchers who need a
thorough understanding of this property should plan to visit the MHT Library as part of their research
project; look at the MHT web site (mht.maryland.gov) for details about how to make an appointment.
All material is property of the Maryland Historical Trust.

DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
The schoolhouse sits above Springdale Road, fifty feet, facing south east. It stands among old trees on a gentle hill, surrounded primarily by farmland. Springdale Road runs south between Uniontown Road and Maryland Rt. 31 which cuts through New Windsor. The low, uncoursed, stone foundation supports a brick structure of American Bond, three bays wide as well as long, with 6/6 double sash windows. The windows are covered by their own blind · shutters, as the owner want~e house sealed. The back wall is void of windows. The gable roof with box cornice is covered with wooden shingles and topped with a very simple, open, wooden belfry with hip roof and again, wood shingles. It contains the origina.l bell. One, single, interior end chimney on the north west side accomodates the interior pot-bellied stove (one similar to the original).
The four-post hip roof porch entrance has a box cornice and wood shingles. The ground level brick walk and floor of the porch is ma.de from over-size handmade bricks, said to be from an old Baltimore school. There is a stone, one step stoop. The front door has five moulded panels with a three-part, rectangular transom light. The plain trim here and on the windows as well as the shutters, cornice and wooden flagpole are painted white. A wooden plaque painted white with black letters is encased above the porch roof in semi-eliptical brickwork and reads "Springdale School - 18.54"
Reversed S hardware to hold the shutters remain; a pair for each window. The interior is ':l. t ne roo:n classroom and has quite a bit o:f museum po
tential. Anthentic items grace the room to make it appear in original form. Many items were salvaged from other one room schoolhouses.
The walls and ceilings are of white-washed plaster, save for thinlyboarded wainscot. Window trim is symmetrically moulded, with corner blocks. Wooden clothes pegs are hung along portions of the wall. The floor is wood of random width. There is an elevated section (stage) for the teacher's desk.
Outside there was a water pump and two outhouses.

This small, one room schoolhouse survives in excellent, near original condition; and is one of the very few in the county unaltered. other~ have been made into storage or transformed into dwellings. Its restoration from a decayed ani collapsed building to a 'near-new' structure is remarkable, as well as its preservation and maintenance over recent years.
Restoration took three and a half years; completed in the fall of 1963 by Marker Lovell. His brother and mother attended the school, and his granfather taught there from 1884-1886. He himself received six years of his education there.
The school was established as a primary school by three trustees, and was thought to have been built by the people in the area. Its contribution 'o education in this p:irt of the county is substantial. Its position then, as now as a 'stand.a.rd' one room schoolhouse, gives it historical significance.
