way to display gratitude to those whoserve our country, the GratefulAmerican Coin program quicklywent through those first 2,000 coins.By selling the coins to others whowanted to say “thank you” to ourmilitary, the Grateful American Coinprogram was able to donate proceedsfrom each sale to organizations thatprovide support services to the se-verely injured men and women of theU.S. Armed Forces.

Today, the Grateful AmericanCoin has recognized over 51,000soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines andveterans. Additionally, it has donatedmore than $113,000 to partner or-ganizations, including The SpecialOps Warrior Foundation and Pawsfor Patriots.

Even more powerful than thenumbers are the personal stories be-hind each of the 51,000 coins. Whilewaiting to board a recent flight, Ben-son “coined” an Army helicopter

pilot to thank him for his service. After receiving the coin, he went tothe Grateful American Coin website, where he realized he had received hiscoin from the organization’s founder. When the plane landed, Benson waswalking out when she heard some-one say, “it’s you, it’s you!” Sheturned around to find the Army pilotwaiting on the jetway for her to ex-press his heartfelt appreciation.

A Grateful American: How Passion andProfessionalism Inspired Gifts of GratitudeSome of Deb Benson’s most

cherished childhood memories arefrom visits to her grandfather’s farmin Temple Terrace, where she wouldfish in his lake. Since then, the land-scape has changed dramatically, butBenson still visits that farm — almostevery weekday. As a manager in theFlorida sales operations departmentat Verizon Wireless, Benson’s officebuilding stands where that farm oncewas, and she can see the old fishinglake from her desk. Benson has ledand inspired many people in her 26-year career with Verizon Wireless, working within nearly every depart-ment, including customer service, marketing, operations and sales. But,it was only eight years ago that Ben-son assumed a personal leadershiprole that would touch tens of thou-sands of lives outside her company.

Around the Fourth of July holi-day in 2007, Benson was searchingfor an engaging way to teach her

sons about the expression of grati-tude. As she researched ways to showappreciation for the selfless men andwomen who defend our country, shehad an idea to have special coinsmade that they could present to sol-diers and thank them for their serv-ice. Benson found that uniquemilitary coins are often collected byservice members, or even earnedthrough achievements or to enhancemorale.

So Benson and her family de-signed a coin of their own. As Ben-son set out to place a small order fora few of their new coins, she discov-ered that to qualify for a price break, she would need to purchase 2,000.Inspired by a legacy of family patriot-ism and her professional passion toconnect with others, Benson decidedto expand the idea rather than scrapit, and that was the beginning of theGrateful American Coin program.

Focused on providing a tangible

“It’s inspiring to show sinceregratitude to the people fighting forour freedom every day,” said Benson.“Their personal stories are the mostbeautiful gift, which I never ex-pected.”

Grateful American Coins havebeen framed by recipients, laid at anunmarked grave in Normandy andburied in the caskets of servicemen, but one of the most impactful mo-ments for Benson was learning abouta 13-year-old who received a speciallydesigned coin for the families of thefallen after his father passed away.Dealing with the death of a parentcan be very hard, and this young manwas no exception. It was difficult forhim to talk about it, so he used thecoin to drive the conversation. When

he went to bed at night, he wouldleave his coin out on the nightstandas a signal to his mom that he wantedto talk about his loss.

This is just one of many encour-aging and emotional stories shared onGrateful American Coin’s websiteand Facebook page. The coin wasthought up as a way for Benson toshow her sons whom the true heroesare in today’s world. And if they’veever stopped to think about the51,000 experiences those coins havegenerated, they’ve probably realizedthat their mom is one, too.

If you’d like to donate, pur-chase coins, or read the stories ofthose who have given or receivedcoins, please visitwww.GratefulAmericanCoin.org.

Tampa Rejuvenation - “Your Health Our Passion”By Matthew Selby

Let’s face it, getting older has thisawful little side effect of aging yourbody. As hormones deplete, our skinbegins to sag and wrinkle, our sexdrive declines, we gain unexplainedweight, we have sleep issues, and ourdrive for life lessens. We cannot con-trol time as it passes each day, but withadvancements in technology and med-ical research, we now can slow downthe negative effects of the agingprocess in a safe and very effective way.

Tampa Rejuvenation, with its clos-est of 4 clinics located at 14448 BruceB Downs Blvd. in Tampa, separatesthemselves with their integrative ap-proach to medicine. The physicians atTampa Rejuvenation let their work andhappy customer testimonials speak forthemselves.

Patient Nancy H. writes, “TampaRejuvenation helped me lose a veryneeded 30 pounds! My primary doc-tor was very impressed that I am nowmuch healthier and no longer a dia-betic risk. The HCG diet is healthy, safe and fast. The staff is great! Theyare all knowledgeable, courteous andhelpful (the Doctor, the Nutritionist,

medical assistants, counselors, officeadministrators). They monitor every-thing from beginning to end and willhelp at any time. I have also nowlearned how to eat healthier. Betweenthis and the diet, I will be keeping theweight off. I feel so much better, healthier and confident. It was one ofthe best things I've done!”

The staff at Tampa Rejuvenation isdetail-oriented and patient-specific intheir treatment – it’s not cookie cuttermedicine. The science is out there; thetreatment is available; but finding theright physicians for you can make allthe difference in the world.

The physicians at Tampa Rejuve-nation are unique – they left the mod-ern tunnel-vision style of medicinebehind. They understand that manytimes conventional medicine is de-signed by “BIG-PHARMA“ to relievesymptoms and sometimes only masksthose symptoms to make them bear-able. I don’t know about you, but Isure don’t want to settle for just bear-able symptoms of anything.

At Tampa Rejuvenation thephysicians honed in their skills withonly one goal in mind – to fix theproblem, not hide it. While interview-

ing the founder of Tampa Rejuvena-tion, Brett Markowitz, the simplepremise of going to sleep each nightand feeling good about what his teamwas doing is clearly at the forefront ofhis business goals and morals. He andhis staff are passionate about their pa-tients and seeing improvements intheir health. It’s clearly somethingthey refuse to waiver from.

Since each patient is different, with their expertise in this field of in-tegrative medicine of anti-aging, thephysicians not only focus on the lab

work, but they listen to symptoms andfocus on their goals when designing acustomized treatment plan using bioidentical hormones and treatingweight issues.

The physicians at Tampa Rejuve-nation focus more on quality thanquantity; they want a patient commit-ted to their health; not a patient that isjust interested in taking a magic pill andhas unrealistic expectations – that’s afantasy. The reality is it has to be acomplete change in lifestyle. That’swhy the physicians at Tampa Rejuvena-

where youstarted, or ifyou're one ofthose peoplewho exerciseregularly only tofind the samescale readingday in and dayout, you are aperfect candi-date for TampaRejuvenationand their 4-DLongevity Plan.

The Diet is specially designed foreach patient individually based upontheir DNA. The physicians run bloodwork on the patient to determine whatkind of diet works best for their ge-netic makeup. It’s science at work for

you, and it really is incredible. It takesthe “fad” diets and the guessing out ofthe equation. You finally find out whatfoods you need to eat for your specificbody. You can even find out whatfoods to completely stay away fromdue to allergies and sensitivities youmay not even know you had. Thedaily hormone aspect of this plan issimple. mously by the other barbers. BarbersDan Marin and Eric Casperson agreethe best thing about working at theCarrollwood Barber Shop is the peo-ple they see every day. “The people Iwork with and the customers aregreat,” enthused Casperson, who hasbeen working here for 14 years.

Back to School Health Tips From Centra CareBack to School can be filled with

emotion, but for many it’s nothingbut a big headache -- literally. CentraCare locations usually notice more pa-tients complaining of an aching headthis time of year.

Centra Care medical director,Timothy Hendrix MD, says that theincrease in headaches cannot be attrib-uted to one main cause. In manycases, the headaches are triggered bynothing more than summertime fun. Here are just some of the reasons yourhead may be aching:

Hot Dog Headache – nitratesfound in foods like, hot dogs, sausageand processed meat are known trig-gers for migraines.

Outdoor Activities – the out-door summer fun can be a realheadache for those who suffer from al-lergies and sinus trouble.

Alcohol (especially red wine) - itdoesn’t take a lot to set off a headachefor those who are migraine-prone.Many chemicals in alcohol including

sulfites, tyramine and more canquickly cause you pain. Alcohol canalso cause dehydration, which can alsolead to a headache.

Sleep – changes in sleep patterns, which happen a lot this time of year, are known to cause migraines forsome. It’s important to remain on aset sleep schedule.

Stress – School supply lists, newteachers, new schedules, whateveryour stressor may be, it can quicklybring on a tension headache.

Increased temperatures – Har-

vard University researchers found thatfor every 9°F increase in the tempera-ture outdoors, the risk of severeheadache jumped by 7.5 percent.

Sun/Heat – a sunburn and heatexhaustion can both be causes forheadaches. Be sure to limit sun expo-sure and stay hydrated.

These are just some of the causesthat can bring on end of summerheadaches. Avoiding the trigger canbe a huge help. You may also find re-lief with over-the-counter medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and aceta-minophen, as well as lifestyle changesincluding relaxation and exercise. For

migraine sufferers, prescription medi-cine may be prescribed.

It’s important to determine thatyour headache is not caused by an un-derlying medical disorder. Seek med-ical care for severe pain, vomiting, neck pain, fever or headache accompa-nied by any numbness, weakness, vi-sion changes or problems speaking.

firm employs 13 attorneys with furthergrowth still planned. In 2008 the firmre-located from downtown to its cur-rent location near the corner of Floridaand Bearss Avenue.

Strategic GrowthRobert is accompanied by his

partner Chuck Bavol, who joined thefirm in March 2011, transitioning thename from The Bleakley Law Firm toThe Bleakley Bavol Law Firm. “WhenChuck joined in 2011 he brought insophistication, experience and excel-lent trial strategies and technologicaltools that really advanced our practiceand allowed us to provide even betterservices to our clients, particularly inthe area of litigation,” says Robert.Chuck is nationally recognized as anoutstanding litigator who has servedas national trial counsel for DowCorning and regularly handles highexposure product liability, medical de-vice, medical malpractice, and con-struction cases.

In 2012 Robert’s long-timefriend and fellow Avila neighbor, RobGrace, joined the firm. Bleakley de-scribes Grace as a “throw-back”. Hesays, “Rob has over 24 years of experi-ence practicing law and is one of thestates’ most respected workers com-pensation litigators. He is a ‘lawyerslawyer’ – professional, ethical, and oneof the hardest working attorneys Iknow.” Grace leads a team of experi-enced workers compensation defenseattorneys that include partners DaveLamont and Crystal Corry.

In 2015 the firm added northTampa resident Kristen Allman, whospent the majority of her 28 year legalcareer as a board certified employmentlaw specialist. Robert noted the firmhas represented large companies andsmaller businesses in employment dis-putes for years and adding an attorney

with true specialization in the employ-ment law area was something he haddesired for many years.

In addition, Robert noted thelong time contributions of partnersR.G. “Mack” McCormick, who hasbeen with the firm since 2001 andwho, along with Robert, representsnational floor cleaning companies andlarge malls in premises liability claimsand been to trial many times withRobert. “We have fought many battlestogether and there is no one else Iwould rather go to trial with thanMack. In a very similar way, our part-ner Melissa Krepps has been throughnumerous trials with Chuck Bavol. She is the guru of federal court proce-dure and has successfully argued at the11th Circuit Court of Appeals.”

Robert says, “not all of your read-ers are a general counsel or risk man-ager of a large company seekingrepresentation in commercial or tortcases. But everyone in your audiencewill probably need a lawyer at somepoint in their lives.” In 2006 Bleakleyadded Christina Hebert as a partner inorder to provide legal services to localbusinesses and individuals in areasother than just litigation. Prior to join-ing the firm, Christina gained experi-ence working in a small Tampa firmwhere she was a partner and handledcorporate work and business transac-tions, guardianship and probate mat-ters as well as drafted wills andformulated estate plans.

Christina, who has 20 years of ex-perience as a lawyer, prides herself onbeing able to provide face to face rep-resentation with clients. In that re-gard, the location of The BleakleyBavol Law Firm’s offices to surround-ing neighborhoods in Carrollwood,North Tampa, and southern PascoCounty has been a bonus. This allowsmany clients convenient access for faceto face consultation with their lawyer,a lost art among too many in the legalprofession. At Bleakley Bavol,Christina has continued to focus her

practice primarily in the areas of estateplanning, probate, wills and trusts, aswell as corporate law, business forma-tion and transactions.

In addition, Robert notedChristina is an added bonus to thecomplex commercial litigation team atBleakley Bavol. “Ronald Denmanjoined our firm in 2014 and, likeChuck, brought something new toour firm. Our firm had always had acommercial litigation presence butRon really brings our commercialpractice to entirely new level, expand-ing it to include complex probate andguardianship litigation. Ron is a for-mer prosecutor and general counsel ofa large corporation. He cut his teethtrying commercial cases down inMiami and throughout the southFlorida area. Fortunately, when he ar-rived, we had Christina’s commerciallyoriented brain to lend to Ron’s teamand it has worked out very well.”

Estate Planning, WillsAnd Trusts

Whether you want to do a simplewill or trust to provide for the disposi-tion of your personal belongings andother assets and property or are look-ing for business succession planning,Christina will offer well thought outadvice and will assist you with your es-tate planning needs..

“At some point in their life, eachand every person is going to need awill and I am here to help with that,”says Christina. “I will take the time toexplain your options based upon yourneeds and goals and help to plan outall the details.”

If you have assets, and have yet toset up a will or trust, I think it’s timeyou come and talk to Christina. Nomatter what your situation may be,Christina may be able to help! “Hav-ing a will is so important,” saysChristina. “You want to make sureyour assets go to the people and in themanner which you want them to go.If you die without a will or a trust,

your assets will pass according to theintestacy laws, which may not be con-sistent with your wishes.”

Having a will is especially impor-tant if you have children who are mi-nors. Something people don’t oftenconsider is the mechanism in whichtheir children will inherit their prop-erty. “When minor children are in-volved, it is usually a good idea tohave trust provisions to provide for thedistribution of the money to childrenover time and in installments; other-wise the children could have completecontrol of the money when they turn18. The use of trust provisions allowsyou to decide at what age the childwill receive money and the amountthey will receive. Trust provisions areparticularly important when your chil-dren are young because you do notyet know what their maturity levelwith be and whether they will be ableto handle a significant amount ofwealth at the time of your death.”

From small family run businessesto large corporations, Christina has a lotof familiarity with estate planning froma corporate perspective as well, and hashelped many business owners plan forthe succession of their business.

Christina says, “I enjoy meetingwith clients and getting to know themand finding out what it is they want toachieve. Building a strong relationshipis really important to me. They needto be able to trust you and have confi-dence in the legal services you are pro-viding them.”

Maybe you already have a will inplace, but your situation has changed, such as you have recently gotten a di-vorce. Did you remember to changeyour beneficiary designation? This is acommon mistake that many peopleforget to do. Your will does not deter-mine where all of your assets will go,the beneficiary designation controlsthat. So if you forget to change thatyour assets can end up going to some-body that you didn’t want it to go to –such as your ex spouse.

There are so many things to takeinto account when estate planning, sowhy not talk to the professionals atBleakley Bavol so you know it will gettaken care of properly!

Trust Is The Key To Success Bleakley credits the firm’s focus

on building trust with its clients asthe reason it has been successful.“Trust is so important; the client hasto know that their lawyer is lookingout for them,” says Robert. “Mostpeople start with a preconceived no-tion that lawyers are only looking outfor their own best interests, but wego above and beyond to prove thatwe put our clients’ needs first andwill always do what is in their best in-terests. We preach to our newlawyers at every monthly meetingthat we must take every opportunityto build trust with our client. In theend, if we can build that bond oftrust with our client, where theyknow, because we have alreadyproven it, that we are looking out forthe client, we will be successful.”

With an experienced roster of at-torneys, The Bleakley Bavol Law Firmdraws on its vast experience to adviseits clients of the significant costs andrisks of litigation. But with each legalmatter, there is also a possible solu-tion. Robert says, “What I like bestabout practicing law is finding the so-lution. Sometimes there is no goodsolution, so sometimes my job is tofind the least bad solution – a way out.All of our attorneys are really good atunderstanding the problem, findingthe best solution for the client and de-veloping a plan to get them there.”

Firm Administrator Jayme Bluffs-tone has been with the firm since2004. She adds a different perspec-tive on the growth and success of thefirm. “We have great attorneys and anincredible staff supporting them. There is a lot of longevity in not onlyour attorneys but also our staff; ouroriginal legal secretary has been herewith us for 15 years – since Robertopened the firm. I think that says a lotabout the environment that Robertand Chuck foster here. This firm is

family and we grow it that way. Weare very particular about the peoplewe bring in because that is a represen-tation of who we are. We are different– our employees often comment thatthe environment here is completelydifferent than any other law firmwhere they previously worked. We in-tentionally run it that way. We are dif-ferent with a purpose.”

At Bleakley Bavol you get thebest of both worlds, the experience, professionalism, and even an elegantlegal environment, without having todrive downtown to get it. ChristinaHebert added, “you can expect per-

sonalized attention from lawyers whotruly care about you and your wellbeing”. As their slogan proudlyreads, “Large enough to handle com-plex cases, small enough to providepersonalized service!”

Trinity Family Physicians Announces the First Recipientof the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award

Dr. Amir Shirmohammad and Dr.Stephanie Eldridge appreciate thegreat response to the inaugural TrinityFamily Physicians’ Tampa Bay MakingA Difference Award. Trinity FamilyPhysicians announced the Award inNeighborhood News & Lifestylespublications in July and now thephysicians are excited to announce thefirst recipient of the Tampa Bay Mak-ing A Difference Award. Dr. Shirmo(as his patients affectionately call him)presented Jim Carow with a beautifulgift basket donated from partneringsponsor Grille 54 that was filled withwine, cheese, crackers and of course, agift certificate to enjoy a delicious din-ner at Grille 54. Nominated for hisvolunteer work with the IWork pro-gram at Idlewild Baptist Church inLutz, Jim Carow makes a difference inthe lives of others here in Tampa Bay!

Dr. Shirmo met with Jim Carowand his wife Mary to learn more aboutthe volunteer work they do and heshared the reason that he and Dr. El-dridge created the Tampa Bay MakingA Difference Award. “My wife and Iwanted to start a program where wecould give back for a worthwhilecause,” said Dr. Shirmo. “Dr. Eldridgesaid right away, ‘Why don’t we giveout an award to people in our com-munity who are making a difference inthe daily lives of others?’ We bothloved the idea!”

Dr. Eldridge and Dr. Shirmogrew up in Tampa Bay, fell in love inTampa Bay, went away to earn medicaldegrees together and then came backto the area to open a family medicalpractice and raise their own family. They look for ways to promote goodin the community they love andthough it has been a busy time for thehusband-and-wife team – Dr. Eldridge

just gave birth to theirthird daughter in Au-gust and Dr. Shirmovolunteers as one ofthe team physicians forhis alma mater JesuitHigh School – they stillfound a way to honorothers who are makinga difference with Trin-ity Family Physicians’Tampa Bay Making ADifference Award.

There were someexceptional nomineesand it wasn’t an easydecision for TrinityFamily Physicians butthey kept coming backto one email with anominee who seemedto exemplify every-thing that the TampaBay Making A Differ-ence Award is meantto represent.

Wendy McDon-nell wrote, “I wouldlike to nominate JimCarow for your Tampa Bay Making aDifference Award. Jim hosts IWorkout of Idlewild Baptist Church onMonday nights, where he and histeam feed, bring hope to and teachthose in our community who are outof work or underemployed. The sup-port and encouragement he offers ispriceless, but there is no charge forthe help or the dinner.

“IWork is a safe place to sharepersonal stories and be vulnerable dur-ing a tough time in your life. With Jimleading, his team gives advice on inter-viewing, resume building, networking, having the right attitude and research-ing to find the best career fit for each

individual. Without IWork and Jim,there would be more hopeless peopleunemployed in our community, that’swhy he should win your next award.”

Jim Carow Makes ADifference in Tampa Bay!

Jim Carow makes a lasting dif-ference in the lives of others byteaching them invaluable job-seekingskills, but he is humble about his in-volvement with Idlewild BaptistChurch’s IWork program, saying, “Idon’t do this alone! We have phe-nomenal volunteers who have beenhelping from day one.”

The IWork program was startedmore than six years ago. One of the

pastors came to Jim, who had a longcareer in recruiting for the healthcareindustry, and asked him to help start aprogram that would focus on helpingpeople who were actively seeking ajob. While IWork does not find jobsfor people, it does offer fellowshipalong with a workshop that teachesnetworking and interviewing skills.Pastor Phillip Hanes said of JimCarow, “He is a fine man and there isa great team of volunteers who workwith him. We are very thankful for thisprogram, which hosts 25 to 60 peopleevery Monday night.”

Jim can’t say enough about thevolunteers (some first came to thegroup seeking help) who put so

much heart into the IWork programthat it has morphed into much morethan a workshop. It is fellowship andcaring. “When we had our first meet-ing, we thought it would be aboutstrategy, networking, Linked In…andwe do all that, but it is so muchmore. The methods we teach workat all levels. We have all kinds of peo-ple from physicians to 19-year-oldswanting to find summer jobs. We justgive people hope.”

He recalls the early planning ofIWork with a laugh, “When they saidwe have to feed people, I said, ‘Do wereally have to? Does every Baptistfunction have to include feeding peo-ple? Can’t we just teach them?’ Butthey were right. I realized early onthat for some, this was their only mealof the day. We’ve got stories that willmelt your heart and we’ve got storiesthat will send you to the moon.”

The IWork program has built in acouple of traditions. Every year they

have an “Office Party” ChristmasParty and put Publix gift cards underthe tree. Jim recalls one young womanwho had lost her car and was losingher house; she was depressed and al-most didn’t come to IWork’s officeparty when she got the voicemail butdecided to ride her bike. Jim recalled,“She burst into tears upon openingher card and finding that she had $25for food. She said, ‘This will last me aweek!’ And then a man walked over toher and handed her his Publix giftcard.” Remarkable!

Another tradition happenedpurely by accident. Sharon had beenlooking for a job for two years whenshe decided to go to IWork on Mon-day nights. After a couple of meetings, she got a job and to celebrate, boughta cake with her first paycheck andbrought it in to share with the group.Someone brand new to the group thatnight got a job the same week andthought it was what everyone did so

he showed up with a cake the nextweek. A tradition of celebration wasborn, and hope carries on at IWork.

Dr. Shirmo asked Jim Carow ifthere was anything he’d like to seehappen from the exposure of winningthe Tampa Bay Making A DifferenceAward. His answer was much thesame as Pastor Hanes – that otherchurches and organizations will offerthe same types of support for thosesincerely seeking gainful employment.Jim pointed out that there are otherchurches in the area that have similarprograms. Log on to Idlewild.org formore information about the IWorkprogram at Idlewild Baptist Church.
