Dear Apprentices:
Welcome to SENA English Program “SEP”: English right here, right now. It is a pleasure to have you here as our apprentice. This is the on-site English program created by SENA English Language Department whose objective is to provide enough linguistic and communicative elements for the “NEW ENGLISH APPRENTICES” to start or continue learning, interacting and communicating by using a foreign language, in this case English.
This is just a single step in a journey of a thousand miles, but this could be the most important one. Without further ado, keep up your enthusiasm and let’s get…

INTRODUCTION
7
The process of implementing new strategies and materials in English teaching that meets the expectations and needs of a specific population was our main concern when we started this journey of planning and developing a set of activities for our language learners . We really want to thank the coordinators and all language instructors at SENA for the insights and intellectual production that is included in this material. This was a cooperative process that aims to provide a minimum spectrum of activities that our apprentices can take advantage of to improve their English competences.
The best in this language journey,
The editors

Actions in the past that were interrupted
Talking about plans
TRAIN YOUR BRAIN
We use the Past Continuous to indicate that a longer action in the past was interrupted. The interruption is usually a shorter action in the Simple Past.
When you use Past Continuous with two actions in the same sentence, it expresses the idea that both actions were happening at the same time. The actions are parallel.

Dear Kelly
I am writing to tell you some details about my last vacation. I hope you to visit this great place on your next holidays.
One of my favorite vacation places is Mexico. I really liked the weather there because it never gets cold. The people were very nice too. The food was really good. Mexico City was a very interesting place to visit. It had some great museums and lots of fascinating old buildings. The hotels were too expensive to stay but there were more affordable options. For example, we stayed at one of the beach resorts in Acapulco. If you are planning to visit Mexico, you definitely have to see the Mayan temples near Merida.
Say hello to your family and friends.
Sincerely yours
Carlos.

Simple past and past continuous
We often use the past continuous tense with the simple past tense. We use the past continuous tense to express a long action. And we use the simple past tense to express a short action that happens in the middle of the long action. We can join the two ideas with when or while.
In the following example, we have two actions:
Long action (cooking), expressed with past continuous tense
Short action (telephoned), expressed with simple past tense
PAST TENSE
I was cooking dinner When You called at 8pm.____________________ 8pm _________________
Long action Short action.
We can join these two actions with “when”:
I was cooking dinner when you called. We use:when + short action (simple past tense)while + long action (past continuous tense)
