Carton Council of Canada Welcomes…
• Information-sharing• Problem-solving• Collaboration
3
Who We Are» The Carton Council of Canada (CCC)
represents the leading carton manufacturing companies in Canada
» Our member companies manufacture and market processing and packaging systems that are convenient, safe and environmentally sound.

How We Came To BeNeed Affiliates
The Carton Council of Canada was established to advance sustainable recycling solutions in Canada.
Cartons are a valuable industry commodity with multiple end markets, including tissue and other value added products.
The Carton Council of Canada is a part of the Carton Council of North America.
In France, carton manufactures belong to the Alliance Carton Nature (ACN).
Carton Manufacturers in other European countries and the United Kingdom are a part of The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE).
5
What We Endeavour To AchieveMission Vision Initial Goals
The Carton Council of Canada’s mission is to increase the environmental performance of food and beverage cartons through minimizing their life cycle impacts, including diverting them from landfills through increased recycling.
Our vision is a world in which every carton is recycled.
Our goal is to work with the entire recycling value chain to facilitate a sustainable infrastructure for carton recycling.
• Work with processors to sort cartons into a separate grade
• Facilitate strong North American end-markets for cartons while taking advantage of existing export end markets
• Create top-of-mind awareness among consumers for carton recycling
• Share our knowledge and industry expertise with governments to promote attainable waste diversion goals.
6
What Do We Mean by “Cartons?”
7
For Consideration: Challenges and Critical Success Factors
• What are the critical success factors for successful diversion of carton containers in blue box recycling programs?
• What are/have been key barriers and challenges to optimize carton container recycling in your program?

What is Needed
Consumers
Awareness –
must know cartons are
recyclable & how & why to do
so
Access –
Canadians able to conveniently
recycle their used cartons at
home & on-the-go
Collectors
Assurance –
proof that markets want & will
recycle cartons
Assistance - technical &
promotional support to
establish carton recycling
programs
Sorters
Assurance –
proof that markets want & will
recycle cartons
Assistance - technical &
potentially financial assistance
to build a business case to sort
cartons
Markets
Assurance -
pricing sufficient to encourage
collection/sorting;
sufficient cartons volume to
justify buying
Assistance – technical &
potentially financial
13
Building Sustainable Markets
Identify suitable North American mill partners
Negotiate agreements with partners to buy cartons at prices that drive collection & sorting
Develop broker ties to move supply to markets
Consumers Collectors Sorters Markets
Step 1
14
First Priority
• Clear up misconception that gable top & aseptic cartons cannot be successfully recycled» There is no wax coating on cartons» Aluminum foil in aseptic cartons does not
prohibit recyclability
15
Cartons – Source of High Quality Fibre• Cartons = high quality, long strand, bleached virgin
fibre source • Primary markets are deinked pulp & tissue users - a
stable secondary fibre market in North America• Conventional fibre supply (e.g., office paper) is not
increasing enough to keep up with mills’ demand» seeking alternative sources of high-quality fibre
• Yield for carton fibre comparable to Sorted Office Paper (SOP) & Coated Book (CBS)
• Carton fiber does not require deinking because printing is on outer polyethylene layer

Traditional Recycling Technology• Repulping of PC Cartons in hydro-pulper (large
blender)» Water + small amount of chemicals (possibly)» Pulp until fibers have separated from poly or poly/aluminum» Send fibers through screens and cleaners to remove any
contaminants» Result: fiber becomes new paper products (tissue, toweling
or fine paper) OR» Air Dry or Wet Lap pulp to be sent to mills for paper products» Poly and poly/Aluminum residual can go to companies to
make products or may be used as fuel on site.» End users: Fibrek, Great Lakes Tissue, KC Mexico, REPAK,
GET
20
Alternative Recycling Technologies
• Extrusion: whole carton solution» Inbound furnish
ground up, blended together and extruded
» can produce Wood Plastic Composites
» Can provide end market for poly & poly/aluminum residual from re-pulping mills
» End users: Ecomadera and Perlamec
• Thermo Compression: whole carton solution» Shredded carton material
sandwiched between 2 sheets of LDPE
» Heat and pressure applied from above and below
» Produces ceiling tiles, wallboard (replacement for OSB & Dura Rock/cement board) & roof tiles
» Can provide end market for poly & poly/aluminum residual from re-pulping mills
» End users: Rewall & Placove

Cartons are now an ISRI traded commodity
(Grade #52) & demand is strong
Continue to Build on Campaign Success
22
Carton Pricing in Ontario• Carton pricing generally follows Sorted
Office Paper (SOP) pricing» Varies by location of source, fibre mix, etc.
• Export pricing varies based on shipping container weights & shipping locations – strong export demand» Over 140 mills consuming cartons worldwide
• Brokers can provide municipalities with enhanced shipping options when volumes are low

For Consideration: Market Update
• Are there opportunities for you to optimize your end markets for carton containers?
• What support would be helpful to optimize end markets for carton container recycling?
25
Increasing Carton RecyclingEngaging Municipalities and Consumers in The
Carton Council of Canada’s Goals
26
Stakeholder Engagement
Creating a two-way dialogue
Provide communications content support to municipal recycling coordinators
Engage in municipal promotion and education efforts to improve residential capture of used cartons
27
Engaging Municipalities & Stakeholders
• Collaborative Efforts• Social Media Support• Toolkit Templates• Video Footage• Stakeholder FAQs for
Communities, Haulers and MRFs
• Technical Assistance• Our Website
•www.recyclecartons.ca
28
How We Can Help• Drive consumer awareness• Promote the broader positive sustainability
profile of cartons to ensure consumers make smart purchases
• P&E materials for communities to customize• CCC plans to provide targeted P&E support
in 2013» In development now» For community initiatives that meet criteria» Expect small pool of matching funding» Program launch in 2013

CCC Materials Are a Starting Point
33
Achieving our Vision
A world where used packaging and printed
paper are seen as valuable resources to be
recovered in an economically and socially
responsible manner
34
For Consideration: Communications• What types of communication
materials/efforts are needed or might be effective to drive higher carton container recycling?
• Any feedback on the CCC communication materials and would these materials be useful to your communication efforts?
35
For Consideration: Next Steps
• Reflecting on the barriers and critical success factors discussed earlier, what are some solutions and actions that could be undertaken to grow carton container recycling?
• How can the CCC best support municipal efforts?
36
For Consideration: Final Recommendations
• What is the ONE key thing the Carton Council could do and the one key thing you/municipalities could do to support increased recycling of cartons?
37
